Castagnaccio Is a traditional Tuscan dessert made with chestnut flour pine seeds, raisins, water, and... no sugar!

My aunt's version also has rosemary. It's 100% #vegan 😋

6:43 AM: taking the cog train from Wengen to Lautenbrunnen 🥱

codewiz,
@codewiz@mstdn.io avatar

6:56 AM: my connection to Interlaken arrives on track 2 exactly as we enter the small Lautenbrunnen station on track 1.

The driver hops off, walks to the opposite end of the train, and climbs into the cabin facing Interlaken. We depart exactly on time.

7:30 AM: RegioExpress 4211, one stop from Interlaken Ost to Spiez.

This short train ride coasts Lake Thun, offering stunning views.

Sorry for the 7:30 AM grey sky... you can easily find better shots online:

Once in Spiez, I rush to the ticket office to purchase the Trenitalia ticket to Milano Centrale.

International itineraries can't be booked with the SBB app, and their website says that tickets are no longer available (a lie).

I pay and run out, forgetting to pick the physical tickets. They call me back. Panting, I arrive at the platform exactly on departure time...

...but thankfully the Italian train is running 1 minute late! 😆

Actually, the livery suggests this train belongs to SBB CFF FFS, short for Schweizerische Bundesbahnen / Chemins de Fer Fédéraux / Ferrovie Federali Svizzere.

But my ticket says Trenitalia. Must be some sort.of "codeshare" agreement... or did I take the wrong train? 😰

The onboard restaurant serves a delicious Planted Geschnetzelte, a 100% #vegan version of the typical Zurich-style sliced meat with purée 😋

Uh-oh... the SBB-Trenitalia codeshare will be delayed 26 minutes. And who is to blame? 😤

There's a good chance I will miss the 11:10 Frecciarossa to Firenze 😨

An announcement just said that passengers who miss their connections can head.to the ticket office to get rebooked on the next train. Luckily, there are high-speed trains departing from Milano Centrale every 30 minutes 😌

Arrived in Milano Centrale.

But there's no rush: my next train is also running 15 minutes late!

Zooming towards Florence at 297 km/h!

The Shinkansen beats the Italian ETR 500 by peaking at 320 km/h on some sections of the Tōhoku line.

Both train technologies could achieve 360 km/h with future track upgrades.

How many floors do you need to climb to burn the calories in a pizza? 🧵

codewiz,
@codewiz@mstdn.io avatar

Multiple web pages quote 0.17 kcal per step climbed.

I'm not sure what's source, but let's assume it's correct for a person of average weight climbing an average step at average speed...

https://burned-calories.com/sport/climbing-stairs

codewiz,
@codewiz@mstdn.io avatar

There's a lot of variation in pizza size, thickness and ingredients, but many American sources quote 250 calories per slice.

https://www.pizzabien.com/blogs/news/how-many-calories-are-in-a-slice-of-pizza-2023-updates

codewiz,
@codewiz@mstdn.io avatar

Actually, this other source gives 508 kcal for a single slice of New York style pizza...

Most sources omit to specify the number of slices per pizza, which is quite typical. In the United States, cutting a pizza into 8 slices is standard.

https://www.nutritionix.com/food/new-york-style-pizza-slice

codewiz,
@codewiz@mstdn.io avatar

But I'm Italian. Multiple sources give 900-1000 calories for a delicious pizza margherita.

This looks like a particularly accurate estimate for various Neapolitan pizzas:
https://mypizzacorner.com/pizza-tips/is-neapolitan-pizza-healthy/

codewiz,
@codewiz@mstdn.io avatar

Back to the original question: if climbing one floor takes 3.4 calories and you ate 1000 calories of pizza (either a Napoli-style margherita or 2 slices of NY-style cheese pizza)...

...you will have to climb 294 floors to burn it! 😱

codewiz,
@codewiz@mstdn.io avatar

@martijn You're right, we only need to workout to burn the "excess" calories in our daily diet.

Though the 2000 kcal diet that's often used as a reference is probably too high for a modern lifestyle where we sit at a desk all day and commute to work by car. My maintenance calorie intake is probably around 1600-1700 kcal per day.

Mario, a long-time family friend, restores (and sometimes makes) all sorts of antiquities.

codewiz,

Mario made these lamps by cutting open used PET bottles. Nice idea.

@codewiz@mstdn.io avatar

Mario also owns this vintage 8 mm movie camera powered by a... spring! Yes. You recharge it by winding the knob on the side. Not sure how long the film spool will last.

This consumer product was designed by Revere, an American company which was acquired by 3M in 1960:

I found some info on the Revere Model 153 Power Zoom:
http://www.jollinger.com/photo/cam-coll/movie/other/roundup_revere-wollensak.html

This is presumed to be a 1962 model, oddly 2 years after Revere ceased to exist as an independent brand.

This model sold for $168, equivalent to $1700 today. According to the US Census, family income averaged to about $6000 in 1962, making this minimalist movie camera affordable for the middle class.

Mario and his wife still use this mechanical kitchen scale.

The label says it was built by Santo Stefano S.p.A. in Varese. There isn't a lot of information online about this presumably defunct company. How old is this thing? How much did it cost?

codewiz,
@codewiz@mstdn.io avatar

Next to the scale, I notice this hand-made wine dispenser.

Mario lifts the wooden box, revealing an air-tight bag designed to prevent oxidation.

I've seen similar containers sold in Tuscan supermarkets, where table wine is cheap and ubiquitous. #Italy #chianti #wine

Mario seems unaware that Mario is a stereotypical Italian name, but when I mentioned Nintendo's Mario Bros., he pulled out these dolls... an ironic birthday gift from his daughter.

He does wear a mustache, but rather than a plumber, he was a barista. Rather than a princess, he married an accountant... and they lived happily ever after... at least it seems so to me 😂
