Is anyone running Linux on a Lenovo ThinkPad T490 or T490s? I'm thinking about buying a refurbished model since I have to give back my work laptop.

So, it's official. I am now unemployed. When my Director scheduled a Zoom meeting with me for 8 AM, and when I joined the meeting, there was an HR rep attending, I knew it was over. It only took 2.5 years to find this job. At 57 years of age, my future is looking very, very bleak, for sure.

The latest RC of Linux Lite uses Google Chrome as the default web browser? No, thank you. I was excited to give it a try until I read this.

It's starting to look like I will no longer be employed over the next couple of weeks. I would love to find something in WordPress, Linux, Open Source, Security, etc. Junior roles are okay. Like I mentioned a week or two back, I just want to get back into some work that makes me happy. My current role is stressful, pays terribly, and with the possibility of losing it over the next couple of weeks, my anxiety is going through the roof. Thanks for any help you give. ❤️

Wow! Kubuntu 24.04 is looking really good! Oh, and, why isn't Kubuntu on Mastodon? 😀

@RL_Dane I think they have and I'm not a fan. I have no issues with Snaps but to remove the ability to install .deb packages is just ridiculous. This is why I've been a Debian guy for so long.

cmccullough,
@cmccullough@fosstodon.org avatar

@RL_Dane Nice! I used to run OpenBSD and really enjoyed it. It's been many years, though. I even ran netBSD on some hardware. 😀

@RL_Dane LOL!!!!! Yep!

Maybe I'm wrong, but is Ubuntu not allowing for the installation of .deb packages from the app store? Snaps are the only allowed format for installation? Personally, I have zero issues with Snaps, but only allowing Snap installation? Not sure how I feel about this.

Okay, so, the new release of @xubuntu is really nice. I had issues with the previous version where when it would wake up from sleep, my mouse would no longer work and I would have to reboot the laptop. This appears to be fixed in this new 24.04 release. I really do love @xfce.

I'm looking for a new role. I would love to get back into IT Security (InfoSec when I last worked in the field) or work for a company on anything Open Source or Linux. Yes, I'm 57-years-old but I'll even take on a Junior level role. I just want to do something that makes me happy. This was the kind of work that made me happy in the past. I'm always interested in something new. Thanks!

I just love it when someone in a forum post states that there's no way you're a real Linux user if you run Linux Mint. I'm running Linux Mint on a piece of my hardware and I've been a Linux user for 30+ years and Unix prior to that. I guess I'm not a real Linux user. I better switch back to Slackware.

Gatekeeping is real in the Linux and Open Source community and it needs to stop. I'm only one person but if you want my respect, leave your gatekeeping at the door. There's a story behind this that I might have to write a blog post about.

Kevin and Andy answer Joe's noob questions about development including the differences between compiled and interpreted languages, C vs C++, why the Linux kernel is written in C, Go vs Rust, and what memory safety means.

@LateNightLinux Loved the subject of this episode. As a developer wannabe, this was really helpful. I've taken quite a few Python courses and was starting to think that maybe I had made a mistake but this episode put my mind at ease.

@thelinuxcast @Vivaldi I really do like Vivaldi. So many great tools that are built right in. Unfortunately, it is a bit resource intensive and I don't have the hardware to handle it. We use ZenDesk and Jira where I work and they just don't run well on Vivaldi.

Hey, fellow distance runners! I'm looking for a new pair of good running ear buds. My right one just died. The left one still works great for podcasts but music sounds terrible. My current pair are from Skullcandy and to be honest, they have been disappointing. Constantly cutting out or they, at times, just outright stop working during a run. I know ear buds can get really expensive but I don't have the budget for more than a $100. Thanks! #running

Anyone I follow here on Mastodon ever run, or still running, @Waterfox on Linux? I just downloaded and installed the Flatpak (a few weeks behind the latest release) and want to see what this browser is all about. It's nice to see forks (is this a fork?) of Firefox, just in case it disappears.

Hey, large companies that are benefiting from small open source projects with one or just few maintainers: How about you help monetarily support the projects or allow your developers to spend time helping the projects? Or even both? You're making millions or billions off the work of someone who is working on a project in their free time, which they may not have much of.
