  • clonezone,

@chris @futuresprog I use @guardianfirewall all the time, even at home, on both phone and iPad. Yeah, I could manage my own VPN and some sort of tracker filter, but I have better things to do with my time.

Side benefit of setting exit point to a non-English speaking country: podcast dynamic ad insertion geotargetting doesn't know what to do and uses ads in a language that I do not understand, or completely gives up and inserts no ads.

    clonezone,

@chris It isn't just the VPN. It's the tracker filtering and the disassociation of my traffic from my fixed IP address. Also, I set things up so separate devices appear from different VPN exit points so that their traffic can't be correlated. (Not paranoid enough to go all TOR; just want to frustrate standard ad tracking.)

Plus, Guardian was started by @chronic.

    clonezone,

@agiletortoise @gruber Yeah… but Command-Q is right next to Command-W and browsers have long restart times, so I have found the similar thing in Firefox to be useful.

WIRED: “The DOJ claims that unspecified surveys have reached similar conclusions, finding that the devices linked to their iPhones deter them from switching to Android.”

    And this is a crime?!

    clonezone,

@mjgardner “less”, etc. have been doing vi-derived interfaces for decades. And Vim long ago became the de facto implementation of vi.

The time 60 years ago that the Beatles held the top 5 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart was nuts due to the number of record labels involved.

Now that Bluesky is open to the public, I hope developers and publishers give it a second look. It has a lot of good ideas about the future of social networking: https://www.platformer.news/bluesky-public-opening-jay-graber/

Looking for recommendations for good documentaries 👀

    clonezone,
    clonezone,

@simonbs As others have said, seek out Errol Morris movies; there are serious and humorous ones.

Currently rewatching the “Slow Burn” miniseries based upon the first season of the podcast of the same name.

If you want thought provoking eye-candy, look at Reggio's “Qatsi" trillogy. (The director of “Baraka” was the cinematographer of “Koyaanisqatsi”.)

Seek out James Burke's “Connections" and “The Day the Universe Changed" series; legal means of acquiring those is challenging, unfortunately.

    clonezone,

    @alexcox @simonbs “F for Fake” is a documentary… and it isn’t a documentary. It is a thing to experience. 👍

    clonezone,

@simonbs It depends upon what one finds depressing. I can deal with historical issues a lot better than current ones.

Watergate being a thing that (eventually) everyone could agree was wrong makes for a decent subject.

W.R.T. Morris: stay away from from "The Unknown Known”; that's depressing. "The Fog of War” is good for understanding a person that you may not agree with the actions of; I personally don't find it depressing.

    clonezone,

@simonbs More Morris: "The Pigeon Tunnel" is on Apple TV+. I liked it.

The Apollo 8 astronauts performed lunar orbit insertion in 1968.

Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and Bill Anders became the first humans to orbit the moon, the first to see an earthrise, fifty five years ago today.

Anders spotted the Earth coming up over the Moon’s horizon:

"Oh my God, look at that picture over there! It's the Earth coming up. Wow, is that pretty!"
