I try, in this article, to address an old dispute within Adorno's aesthetics: whether his account of aesthetic truth is coherent, whether there is a sense in which we can know something through our interaction with artworks that cannot be known in any other way.

@philosophy That old dispute turns out to be surprisingly relevant for the 'scientific' turn that some artists are making today: instead of simply affording their audience an aesthetic experience, these artists are also trying to do research, and set themselves the goal of disseminating the results of that research through artistic media

@philosophy
In the article, I therefore use this contemporary development in art, to shed new light on the old debate in Adorno's aesthetics. I argue that the best way of making sense of 'art-science' is to see it as a distinct mix of aesthetic and theoretical activity, much, I argue, like Adorno's own aesthetic theory.

@philosophy
Art-science, in other words, is not quite art, and not quite science. That is its unique strength. I conclude the article by offering some reflections on how conceiving of art-science in this way, also sheds light on our understanding of aesthetic truth in 'ordinary' arts

I try to show, also, how to interact with art-scientific works through an art-critical discussion of patricia kaersenhout's "Of Palimpsests and Erasure"

kaersenhout's work critically interrogates the history of the transatlantic slave trade, in this work specifically: Maria Sibylla Merian's historical entomological work Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium, and its ambiguous role both as a testimony the cruelties of slavery, as well as a work that was made possible through the (ab)use of enslaved peoples and indigenous knowledge

Was reminded today of my favourite H.L. Mencken quote:
"#Democracy is the theory that the common #people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard."
In: A Little Book in C major (1916)

(Thanks to @BonnieHonig's "Between Decision and Deliberation", which alerted me to this quote in the first place)

Pictured: Ongoing renovations to Lunet II, the second of the waterside fortifications built outside of the medieval city centre of Utrecht.

The philosophical thought experiment of Theseus' ship aims to make clear the thought that you can renovate something (a ship in the original example, but here let's take the lunet as a stand-in) to such an extreme degree that it becomes another object entirely. But at what point does that happen exactly? How much of the building needs to change?

@apodoxus @philosophy that's one way of dealing with it! Just reject the premisse of the experiment. I suppose that's the solution to all thought experiments.
