So, this was released today. My third stamp with Canada Post. Qarlinngua (The pants). And technically my second stamp with a family member in it, as the tiny figure in it is my son Travis. Now for one with Hilary in it.

I’ve very proud of all of these, beyond the cache. They are about my home, and family. And also my family has a long history with the Post Office, 101 years. My grandfather, father, and brother were all postmasters in Roblin.

cjgyt,

@NunavutBirder A fantastic photo, and so cool to know that it’s destined to travel the globe.

cjgyt,

@NunavutBirder In Bruges is fantastic. Superb script and performances. One of my favourite films.

The rampant pillaging and straight-up “appropriation” of human-generated training data from the Internet—without compensation—is a hallmark of many of today’s giants. Now that they are starting to step on some wealthy toes, I think litigation is about to smack them down hard this year. NYTimes got a head start; who’s next?

“YouTube CEO warns OpenAI that training models on its videos is against the rules”

https://www.engadget.com/youtube-ceo-warns-openai-that-training-models-on-its-videos-is-against-the-rules-121547513.html

cjgyt,

@drahardja I’m sure reminding OpenAI of “the rules” will be an effective deterrent. Besides, once it’s all vacuumed up, what does it matter anymore? It’s closing the barn door after you think the horse has come home—except someone has already turned the horse into glue, says “oops” and then proceeds to sell the glue and ask if you have any other horses they can borrow.

Terrible news: The Whitehorse Star, which has been operating since the Klondike Gold Rush, is closing down — https://www.whitehorsestar.com/News/after-124-years-we-re-calling-it-an-era

cjgyt,

@mivox @AK_OK I wonder if the issue is property. I believe it’s printed in the same building in which it’s based, so a substantial part of the Star’s value today is probably its building and the land. They did say some locals were interested in taking on the paper but they couldn’t agree on terms.

Okay I'm going to describe something, that I'm thinking that some other people have too:

So, when I'm feeling very sad, emotional, and overwhelmed, and I just feel like I can't keep going. I have this sort of other hyper rational part of myself. I call it Outside Man, mostly because it feels like it hovers over the top of my ocean of my emotions, and can see things from outside of where I am. Outside Man is the one who tells me that emotions change and this intensity of feeling won't last forever, and I need to do the things I know will help my mental state.

Is this or something like this, something other people experience?

And yes, I know that it's probably inherently sexist that I call what I consider my more rational self by a male moniker, but I've called it that since I was a kid, and it's stuck. Hubs said Outside Man sounds like a horror movie!

cjgyt,

@RickiTarr I’m feeling a lot like that right now and I’m struggling to find balance or separate it all. So I can definitely relate.

The Pegasus Arrives. One of my favorite moments made all the more powerful by Bear McCreary's amazing music. Wish the hope had lasted a little bit longer, but this scene will always be pure awesome. https://youtu.be/5Teb-nW7efk?si=5vJxMrOJCQJmGicX

cjgyt,

@gedeonm BSG is one of a handful of shows that made me cry multiple times. Moments like that one, or when Kara leaves Adama’s quarters in tears after telling him about Zak failing basic flight, or Tigh after the escape from New Caprica… so many moments of great performances and characters you care about.

cjgyt,

@gedeonm Absolutely. I can’t remember which of the special features it was in, but I recall RDM saying something to the effect that he regretted the “they have a plan” statement at the top of each episode, that it ultimately overcomplicated the Cylon story backed the creatives into a corner since eventually they’d have to explain “the plan”. They didn’t always try things that worked, but I give them endless credit for always trying to go the interesting path and subvert expectations.

Saturday morning ski, .

cjgyt,

@seachanger Thanks! We’re super fortunate to have a great cross-country ski club and trail network in Whitehorse. Always a great way to start the weekend (as long as the temperature and windchill aren’t too nasty, anyway!).

cjgyt,

@seachanger Can relate! I really need to see more of Alaska beyond Skagway, Haines, and my average of a once-a-decade day trip to Juneau.

Wordpress advertises that you can customize the look of email newsletters, but I couldn’t find settings for that — so I wrote support. They replied and said actually, no, there are no settings for that.

But first, their AI Support Bot took a crack at an answer — and absolutely, confidently hallucinated two settings that don’t actually exist. I thought I was losing my mind because they just weren’t there.

That feels worse than just not replying at all, right?

Support tells me, “Wordpress does not provide direct settings” to change these options.

cjgyt,

@cabel I think any organization that chooses to offer LLM-powered support is just choosing to inflict reputational damage upon itself. The benefits do not outweigh the risks when you piss off your customers/clients by using a bot that will just outright lie.

Yesterday something I’ve dreaded for about a year happened. My car needed a boost. You see about a year ago the lever to open the hood broke and I’ve had no way to open it.

So last night, after supper, I tackled it. In the process I snapped off two panels in the cold but accessed the cable, and opened the hood and boosted the Edge.

Here’s the weird thing (which I think is related to the battery going dead): About a year and a half ago my audio in the car suddenly went dead. No tunes,

1/2

cjgyt,

@NunavutBirder Weirdly, my Nissan has an opposite issue when it's colder than -25º. It's always been a reliable starter, but if you drive for 15-20 minutes and then leave it off for about an equivalent time, the engine will start but only the radio/map will be powered up. No heat, no power steering, etc. Give it 10-15 minutes and everything will kick in (usually with a check engine light) or turning it off and on again after that time usually has everything running normally.

cjgyt,

@NunavutBirder Very. The dealership has never been able to figure out the cause, so at this point it’s just a quirk I accept and know will happen now and again each winter.

cjgyt,

@NunavutBirder To be fair, I have called it my spite car more than once (I bought it in part because I knew I wouldn't be able to haul my then-employer’s trade show display and materials)… so that probably set me up for something quirky! I don't regret buying it, but I also don't drive much (it just hit 45,000 km and will be 9 years old this summer).

Would be fun if the crew of the Enterprise each had their own personal settings for the replicators on board. Not only your favorite meals and beverages mind you, but you could specify the kinds of containers you’d want beverages repicated in, temperatures for various kinds of drinks, flat ware design, etc.

Then those settings would follow you around via your combadge. So ordering in a crew’s mess would yield the preferred results. 😎🖖

cjgyt,

@gedeonm I’ve been doing a speed run through TNG with my girlfriend (we’re probably watching 6-8 from each season on average) as she’d never seen any before. Thanks to this episode in particular, Barclay has become a favourite character of hers.

cjgyt,

@gedeonm I’m appreciating his performance so much more this time around than I ever had before. I always liked the character and found him sympathetic, but Schultz really imbued that character with soul. So, so good.

… and I think it’s possible I’ve only ever seen Schultz on Star Trek? 😳

cjgyt,

@gedeonm I just looked him up on Wikipedia and… oh… oh dear.

“Schultz has also written for Breitbart where he likened liberalism to mental illness, and has similarly suggested that President Barack Obama's administration may intend to force sex reassignment surgery onto him and others.”

I’ll skip sharing this info with my girlfriend. She’d be heartbroken.
