christopher,

True. That's probably my biggest hesitation.

christopher,

Good point. And it is the reason it is high on the list to becoming my next phone.

Someone needs to write an #ADHD videogame called "Dopamine Farming" where you have a stable job and a great life and all of a sudden DONT care about anything in the world and start planning things around the dopamine they will produce so you can get through the day, like, "Time for a haircut! I don't need one that badly, but that's fifteen dopamine points, so I'll take it!"

christopher,

Distrohopping is the best game ever! Love Gnome Boxes for this. 💯
It's time I start playing again. 😉

I grabbed this photo a few minutes ago. The clouds have already changed. We are under a tornado watch for the next hour.

christopher,

We are safe, thanks.
Last spring, we had over 6 tornado warnings. Hopefully, this year won't be that exciting.

Accountability partners have never worked for me. I've tried to implement this a dozen times in my life while trying to make some hard changes and build healthier habits. On paper, it looks great, but in reality it's always a flop, proving to myself that I am on my own if I want to truly create who I want to be.
Do I have people in my life to run me to the hospital at a 3am emergency? Yes. Do I have a friend who would help my family if I couldn't? Yes. Do I have a friend I could confide in? Yes. Do I have a friend willing to check in on me on a routine basis? No. Do I have a friend to ask me if I'm staying on track when trying to better myself? No.
My experience with the idea of having an accountability partner is just fairytale stuff.
I've had to realize that if I want to make changes, I can get help creating a road map. I can talk to someone about gaining the skills. The road is lonely and I have to want it for myself. I must keep myself motivated and persevere. It's hard or maybe impossible to find someone to truly walk alongside me.

I reinstalled Windows on my laptop and bought an
iPhone. Then, installed Google Chrome on both
devices. Best day of my life!

I could either use a reality check or some encouragement to move forward.

I have been actively degoogling, defacebooking, weaning myself off of Big Tech for a couple of years and still going. My wife and kids, and basically anyone I know IRL, are head deep in Google, Apple, Facebook, and all the others. They are avid Meta users, backup all their photos to Google, and just don't care one bit about their privacy & security, nor mine.

So, what are those like me to do? By default, I have no privacy or security because of those around me. I'm starting to ask myself "what's the point?"

christopher, to random

Is anyone else playing the fine line of thinking you need to connect with more people to fend off loneliness with the other side of the line wanting to buy a camper and become the nomad no one can find?

mikedev, to random

You're quite free to join us in the permission-based and consent driven galaxies of the fediverse.

Or you can keep hanging out with the 17 million or so "popular kids" who spend their days arguing about who is federating with whom today and constantly shuffling instances to try and find one that blocks all their enemies but doesn't block all their friends -- or that won't block you on some whim.

It's the same network and all the same people. It's a different way of dealing with conflict.

Peace.

christopher,

I would love to open my Streams instance up to the public, but I have no desire to moderate it, or deal with these people creating block lists or feel somewhat accountable/responsible to what people say from my instance. That's what holds me back.
I'll think about this a bit harder and maybe open it up a bit.

I have been finding myself traveling to St. Louis often for my work. I usually have an open evening to check out stuff while I'm there. I've done the Arch, the zoo, the Foundary, the Botanical garden, the science center & several other things.
What do the people on your instance recommend I go check out on these weekday evenings?

Interesting little dilemma I'm facing with the testing of conversation containers. The parts I'm having the most difficulty with are 1) groups and 2) moderated comments.

Ironically, conversation containers make both of these things a piece of cake. A constrained conversation by definition relays all content to its audience, which is exactly what a group does. A constrained conversation also by definition is a moderated conversation because a comment isn't part of the conversation until it has been added to it by the owner.

So why is there a problem?

Mastodon.

We altered everything we did in bizarre ways a few years ago just to make our consent-driven communications compatible with the elephant in the room. And even though this new architecture does away with all of the ActivityPub hacks and performs the same operations in completely legal ActivityPub objects without requiring any extensions, Mastodon doesn't recognise the entire concept of groups and moderated content. So we'll either need to come up with hacks that make our stuff compatible with their primitive data model, or just say "fugg it" and do it the right way and "fugg them" if they don't want to play in a more capable vision of the ActivityPub universe.

I'm leaning towards the latter. We're creating a better, friendlier, and safer fediverse. This train has been building momentum for 14 years and has no brakes.

Please don't stand on the tracks.

christopher,

Same vote here!

It's been one of those days where everything takes longer or just doesn't work out.
Replacing a door knob led to tweaking the deadbolt and replacing an alarm door sensor.
Then, I tried to replace a dishwasher supply hose. This turned out to be 3 trips to the store and still couldn't get the dang thing to stop leaking water.
But, I kept my cool on the whole thing, though quite frustrating, so I'm calling it a win.
I'll take on the victories I can at this point.

I did go on an expensive date with my wife...... to the grocery store. 🤣🤣🤣
The rest of the evening will be me updating a Windows laptop for a friend and getting some sleep.

#GoodNight ya'll. #TZAG

christopher,
christopher,

New (refurbished) laptop that needs the typical updates when reinstalling Windows. I'll probably migrate to Windows 11 as soon as it recognizes that it can do so.
My friends always ask about helping them buy a laptop, so I by one, set it up for the normie and hand it off.

christopher,

So many people stuck in it. My wife included. I keep giving them off-ramps, but they stay. So many of our local businesses, schools, & organizations use it as a full webpage, like their only presence on the internet. Just BLOWS my mind.

It's absolute crap that I can't send photos from Android to iPad with Bluetooth. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! Why do I get the feeling Apple is behind this?

Northern Iowa doesn't fool around with their Casey's Stores. There are 2 at almost every exit. All while no Starbucks in sight.

christopher,

Not that I'm looking for a Starbucks. Starbucks coffee tastes terrible in my opinion.

After taking care of the wife and son, both with sinus infections and the wife with pink eye, I’m now down with a sinus infection and may have pink eye. What a great way to end the year lol.

Oh gosh! Sorry to hear that!
