An important distinction is slowly being uncovered about the definition of the term "fediverse." Who is it that gets to decide what this place is? How are we being represented? These are not easy questions to answer and if we don't do a better job describing ourselves, then the job will get done for us by people who don't understand the underlying values we hold. #fediverse #meta #threads

@liaizon seeing the Meta one in the context of an indicator coming from an instance-local POV instead of the grand overview POV of the commonly used one is making more sense to me now, so I tried to reconcile the two of them to see how it would work, but I am not very good at that as you can see from the results :)

folks, if we're gonna go and get the goatsethreads logo designer fired for designing the goatsethreads logo by shitposting hard about it we have to at least resolve to boost the designer's getFediHired toots afterwards, okay?

Meta/Threads/Facebook/Instagram has made their own symbol for the fediverse, so we better have a good argument for why this is not representative of us because we are quickly gonna see a lot of this icon...

Open note to self: the non screw-in audio TRS locking cable jack is called "bayonet"*.

I tend to chew through these for whatever reason so have to remember the term when ordering replacements. I'd been calling them "Sennheiser locks" but that isn't exactly right.

#audio

(edit to add- like the B in BNC cable, though these are plastic)

chillicampari,
@chillicampari@layer8.space avatar

For what it's worth I'd rather have both a cable and input that cleanly disconnects under tension and reusable with multiple devices than one that locks in a weird way and wears down faster.

chillicampari,
@chillicampari@layer8.space avatar

In sillouette to show what I am talking about. The plastic isn't a good choice with this type of locking connector. I have more than one like this and I think I'm just going to file them down and see what happens.

chillicampari,
@chillicampari@layer8.space avatar

@bobjonkman these are for the cable to the earpiece on some headphones. I've seen them so far in 2.5mm and 3.5mm, the other end is a regular 3.5mm connector. The devices are not compatible with regular connectors as the input contains the other part of the locking mechanism (groove with extrusion) so standard regular connectors won't fit.

chillicampari,
@chillicampari@layer8.space avatar

@bobjonkman I did my best to get a side by side that shows the difference. Top is a standard 2.5mm TRS and the bottom one is a locking connector.

chillicampari,
@chillicampari@layer8.space avatar

@bobjonkman and what the device inputs look like. First pic is typical non-locking, second one is locking. Third is a side by side of both types.

The carnivorous plants are starting to grow again after their winter dormancy.
These ones are indoor windowsill ones grown from seed on sphagnum moss.

@maartje how weird. I don't think I have seen gendered train toilets since I last took an Amtrak (1980s).

How do you capitalize the name of this network?

chillicampari,
@chillicampari@layer8.space avatar

@bobjonkman looks like it started out lower case (Wayback Machine link below), then somewhere along the way people started capitalizing it. I do that now, though that might be from living in Germany for several years and I capitalize more nouns than I used to (even with English), so if/when it's commonly lower cased again from widespread usage maybe it will be returning to its original form :D @evan

Last night I was out with some friends at the pub and this guy was hitting on my friend and when she told him that she had a boyfriend he immediately started like touching me and hitting on me instead! I can’t imagine that this would ever be considered attractive behavior even for straight girls. It felt icky 😬

@chillicampari@layer8.space avatar

@danirabbit ugh. Yes, very icky.

My Nokia G42 5G didn't make the jump to Android 14 gracefully. So far it's most noticeable with Bluetooth, BT audio codecs and BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) handling, they generally seem somewhat bugged. AAC out to paired AAC supported device seems to be unavailable now so it defaults to SBC. Luckily AptX, AptxHD and AptX Adaptive are working. AptX LL is falling back to AptX (but I'm not sure this phone ever supported Low Latency).

Google Fast Pair is being unreliable, so bypassing it as I can by clicking the window under the prompt to pair traditionally.

Developer Options to set overrides for codec defaults and preferences is not working with the message of "Failed to apply overlay".

Otherwise, there has been some slowness and general wonkiness that can happen at any upgrade so I've factory defaulted it (twice) which cleared up the lag, but the issues with Bluetooth, codecs and Developer Options remain.

I don't know if this is fixable using ADB but will keep an eye out. I'll probably use this configuration for a while, but if it bugs me too much I may end up seeing if I can downgrade to a (model stock) Android 13 image.

Repotting day for the Venus Flytraps planted from seed in Fall 2022. They seem about halfway out of dormancy. The leaves are starting to stand up and there is new growth, but most of the traps are not fully active yet. They were pretty easy to work with this time. Most of them went into a larger pot, but I put some in smaller pots to give to friends this spring. The last pic is right when they were removed from the old pot.

Proprietary cables can be hella expensive. I lost a USB C to 3.5mm aux cable for one of my headphones so ordered a third-party cable that didn't work, to then find out that apparently no third-party cables work with them. The replacement is 25.99€ and I have a feeling that if I order it, the original will turn up. https://hanexservice.eu/en/webshop/product/2647-cable-3-5-jack-px7-s2-dark

People who have spent time working on Accessibility know that it is not a single project with a finish point, it is a practice that (ideally) should be included in things that are used. And things that are used (and the usability of the item) can be measured to see if they work for everyone or not, and those items can be declared successful (or not).

Anyone who says "Accessibility has failed" with confidence seems at best naive in the same way anyone stating "Accessibility has succeeded" are.

chillicampari,
@chillicampari@layer8.space avatar

This is a response to an article making the rounds that AI will fix Accessibility via Generative UI. It's written by a well-known Usability expert and consultant. I don't discount the idea of Generative UI as a whole, it's a topic that's been discussed in the Open Source community for at least 10 years (that I remember). But I don't think there is one quick fix or shortcut. Actually I know there isn't. And to disregard the work of so many people over the years is just kind of a dick move.
