@cgrymala@higheredweb.social

I'm a web (mostly #WordPress) developer who tries as much as possible to focus on #a11y. I work in #HigherEd.

I'm a dad of 3 grown kids and a grandfather to 2 beautiful girls.

I enjoy retro video games, but I'm not obsessive about them.

I love TV and movies, and spend a lot of time watching something. I absolutely love music.

I enjoy playing trivia, sometimes as many as 3 or 4 nights a week.

I'm a Christian, but not that kind of "Christian".

I'm a lefty, bleeding heart liberal.

So is DeSantis going to pass an emergency regulation to let felons who haven’t served their time yet vote in Florida?

@glennf I thought the public voted to allow felons to vote in Florida a few years ago. Am I misremembering?

    @chris is there something specific you're looking for that you don't get in the web interface?

    Umm. I don't know about you, but I really don't consider "pumpkin roll slices" as a "meat substitute". (Screenshot from Weis Markets storefront on Amazon)

    It's amazing how many products on Amazon have competing reviews like "5 stars; does exactly what I expected it to do" and "1 star; it was completely and utterly broken when it arrived at my house, and they wouldn't issue a replacement"

    I ended up stuck in "paradox of choice" hell every time I look at buying something.

    Is there a way, through code, to lock a #WordPress #innerBlocks template for everyone except folks with specific capabilities? Is there a way to get the current user and test their capabilities from within the Block API?

    I never would have imagined when Suits ended in 2019 that it would become a massive cultural phenomenon 5 years later.

    @redcrew @shawnhooper it was the number 1 show on Netflix a few months ago, now the stars are appearing in all sorts of ads, and they recently announced a new spinoff based in LA

    They should do a version of the show "The Price Is Right" but have all boomers as contestants and have them try to guess the prices of the basics needed to survive in the modern age.

    Just cancelled a #WordPress plugin subscription that went from $75.60/year up to $199/year. I don't need it that badly.

    It's not so much that $199/year is that expensive for the service it provides; it's just that the jump of more than 100% at once is too much to deal with.

    cgrymala,
    @cgrymala@higheredweb.social avatar

    @chris no, apparently they stopped offering the license I had about a year & a half ago. It used to be $108/year off the shelf, with a renewal discount. Then it jumped all at once to $299/year with a $100 renewal discount.

    They sent an email in May 2022 with a subject of "Your [plugin name] license has changed", and I missed it (and also missed the fact that I paid that new price last year). The only reason I noticed this year was because my card had expired.

    I've really been enjoying The Floor, but, can someone please tell me what the hell "Nepo Babies" are? They've mentioned that category a bunch of times, but no one's challenged the player with that expertise

    Wow. I think my Hulu subscription was $12.99/month last time I looked; now it's $17.99/month. That's a huge jump.

    @chris thankfully, the only live TV service we have is Philo. We aren't worried about news, sports or local channels (we have a good antenna if we want to watch local), so Philo offers everything we want and more for $20/month (I think new subscriptions are $25/month)

    cgrymala,
    @cgrymala@higheredweb.social avatar

    @chris I've had whatever "DirecTV Now" is called now, and Sling, and both of them offered way more than we wanted for way more money than we wanted to pay. We'd already switched to Philo before YouTube TV and Hulu Live came on the scene

    Google just announced some changes to their reCaptcha service... one of which being this:

    "Renaming of the reCAPTCHA no-cost product to reCAPTCHA Lite, providing protection for up to 10,000 instead of 1 million assessments per month."

    Instantly regret hooking so many websites up to this service now! 😩

    That's a quota drop of 990,000 monthly requests.

    A 99% reduction.

    %&£@ 😬

    cgrymala,
    @cgrymala@higheredweb.social avatar

    @dev_ric @shawnhooper and I'll bet they'll start to require you to have a credit card associated with it before you can use it for anything at all, too, just like they did with Maps a while back.

    cgrymala,
    @cgrymala@higheredweb.social avatar

    @dev_ric @shawnhooper I switched everyone I could to OpenStreetMap when Google made that change, just so I didn't have to add a card. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of another service that offers nearly what reCAPTCHA offers, so I might be stuck with that one.

    Who do I contact at to inquire why the utility to convert between single site and multisite in their portal seems to be so unstable?

    If I duplicate a multisite environment, it doesn't seem to turn it on properly.

    If I disable multisite and re-enable it 5 or 10 minutes later, it fails a lot of the time.

    Last week, I had to go back & forth 3 times before it finally worked; this morning, I've had to go back & forth 5 times already, and it still hasn't worked properly.

    Oh, the irony. I was getting ready to read an article about blocking ads on my phone (I have really good ad blocking set up on my home network, but less protection outside my home network) and was greeted by this.

    cgrymala,
    @cgrymala@higheredweb.social avatar

    @chris I have an Eero mesh at home, and I've manually blocked the domain names of most of the large ad networks.

    It's wild. I play my mobile games at home and almost never see an ad, but on the rare occasions I open those games away from home, there are ads in between every action.

    Does anyone know where the #WordPress Action Reference can be found, now? The old location in the Codex now redirects to a generic "Reference" list that doesn't seem to have the list of actions linked anywhere.

    Here's the map showing the rain/snow line, and I've placed a little yellow dot showing approximately where we are.
