Writing code by staring into space for approx. 6 days and then writing everything in an hour.

cda,

@North ๐Ÿ’ฏ This is why office (busy)work tracking shit like kanban, agile boards, scrum, standups, jira, etc are such a bane. It's not a blasted factory line.

This article on the OceanGate tragedy is incredible. In one way it's mind bending how this company operated: hubris over engineering, exploitation, intimidation, explicit regulation avoidance, ignoring experts, paranoia, etc. And, in another, it's so grossly common. So many common factors with Uber, AirBnB, Theranos, etc etc etc. https://www.newyorker.com/news/a-reporter-at-large/the-titan-submersible-was-an-accident-waiting-to-happen The article is well written and thorough. Too many points to summarize. It just keeps piling on. Boggling levels of malfeasance.

It's bonkers to me that Rammstein is still touring in 2023. Till has looked like a 60-year-old Peter Stormare since like... '98.

Fuckin' good on 'em. I can't believe I missed my chance to see them at Red Rocks a few years ago.

    cda,

@North ya with Till I think it's easy to imagine "its not the years, it's the miles"

I've been using LittleFS (https://github.com/littlefs-project/littlefs) for a few embedded projects and I am fairly happy with it. It's quite straight-forward to implement a backend block device driver for it (ready, program, erase, sync). E.g. a SPI flash or SD/MCC. You can stand something basic up in probably 20-30 minutes.

However, you will want to implement your own block-level caching to get good performance out of it. It is quite "chatty" when it comes to hitting the meta-data blocks.

  • cda,

@kentindell @adamjcook @CrackedWindscreen I get the vibe you are putting down, but this one might not be so clear cut. It's not clear what a "proper" camera would be in this comparison. Something with such high mass production numbers might be hard to beat in terms of performance/cost, defect rate, or in general total test hours in the field.

    cda,

@kentindell @adamjcook @CrackedWindscreen That's certainly true but the that doesn't mean startups also have access to those components, or at meaningful cost points. There are situations where leveraging redundant commercial products is cheaper than the one expensive industrial one.

    cda,

@adamjcook @kentindell @CrackedWindscreen yeah... I never heard of Ghost except that article and there's definitely a lot of reading between the lines I (we) can do about their perceived safety culture that raises eyebrows. But I think the general premise about the hardware isn't outright disqualifying. Lots of components turn out to be rad hard and survive 125C, for instance, even though they aren't qualified by the mfr to be so.

    cda,

@adamjcook @kentindell @CrackedWindscreen Agree 100% on the validation process. And yeah, there's sadly a culture of cavalier startups venturing into safety-critical systems. It's gross.

I was reacting to "proper cameras" more than Ghost specifically. Some commerical components are so good and so cheap now that I think it's a valid experiment to run. That's a different claim than this startup specifically should run the experiment on public roads.

    cda,

@kentindell @adamjcook @CrackedWindscreen From The Drive article, "simply had not been tested before under tougher automotive conditions, which included large temperature fluctuations. When Tesla performed the tests, the electronics ended up working just fine."

I would probably regret wondering this if I got the answer, but I would love to know what this testing routine actually was.

What is everyone's preferred way to limit inrush when building a board that has a bunch of big bulk capacitors at the input?

NTC thermistors are cheap but waste power and I'm not thrilled at the idea of having something that gets super hot on a board I'm probably gonna be reaching over probing etc.

I'm wondering about using a load switch IC with soft-start feature, and enable strapped to Vin (directly or through a resistive divider depending on the input range). Anybody done this before?

Also, is ~2500 uF at 12V even enough that I need to worry about inrush or is the upstream wallwart etc going to be perfectly happy with that?

    cda,

    @azonenberg depending on the situation:

    • NTC and then FET to close (but hysteresis can be problematic)
    • chonk power resistor (like ceramic if necessary) and FET or relay/contactor to close
    • Something like the LTC4368 (there's a bunch in this family), especially if I'm looking at robust input protection beyond just inrush anyway
