Want a break from reading about congestion pricing? I just published a new guest post from George K.!

Did you know there are jitneys (most operating in Spanish) with several runs a day, roughly every two hours, between Washington Heights in Manhattan and eastern Pennsylvania (the Poconos, the Lehigh Valley and Reading), with stops in Fort Lee, Paterson, Union City, Irvington and Newark Airport?

RT @mahoneyw Notably, Hochul rose to political prominence because of how well she managed a campaign against tolls for people commuting into a city

"The citizens of Buffalo and its first- and second-ring suburbs should not be penalized every time they leave their boundaries by paying tolls to drive to work, go to the mall, visit downtown attractions or take the kids to play hockey," she wrote in a 1998 op-ed

RT @nycdsa_ecosoc Governor Hochul to transit riders: DROP DEAD!

We've sent 100s of letters to her office, to state & federal reps & to the MTA board demanding they implement congestion pricing now. No new taxes on wages, no political football!

RT @marcelemoran You cannot design a more obviously progressive policy than charging a small minority of (largely high income) drivers to benefit a vast majority of (largely low + middle income) transit riders.

RT @hemakhemak August 26, 2021 I think the route of logic goes:

  • I'm a progressive
  • This progressive idea would inconvenience me
  • oh sh*t
  • Wait, I'll claim I'm opposed because the poor, POC, or handicapped will be disadvantaged

@tmstreet There are claims that she did this under pressure from House Minority Leader Jeffries. If you're represented by a Democrat, you might want to tell your Representative how frustrated you are at Jeffries's incompetent strategizing attempts:

Anniversary blog post from June 6, 2010: Why doesn't "BRT" work very well outside of South America and China? Because it may have enough Glamour to get politicians to subsidize it, and to get travelers to ride it once, but it doesn't have enough Amenities or Value to get them to make a Habit out of it.

At least one anti-congestion pricing lawsuit has a hearing before the program is scheduled to go into effect on June 30. Some of the naysayers may ask a judge to block the tolls with a temporary injunction - but judges may require the plaintiffs to post a bond to cover legal fees and money lost by the MTA in the event the public wins the suit.

In retrospect, it's clear that as soon as #CongestionPricing cleared what was supposed to be the last hurdle, advocates should have started posting pictures of Varick Street at rush hour with "25 days until we clean this up."

RT @jonorcutt An interesting thing the MTA's new congestion pricing zone layer shows clearly is that while there will be route carve-outs to avoid the charge at the Brooklyn & QB Bridges, all trips over the Manhattan (WB too) will be charged

So yes, let's use some of the bridge better

When Kathy Hochul refused to endorse her party's candidate for Mayor, maybe because out of loyalty to the incumbent who lost the primary, maybe because she thought India Walton was too far left, that was when I realized Hochul was too small minded and parochial to be a good leader.

That was before Hochul refused to ask the Democratic State Committee to replace its chair, Jay Jacobs, after he compared Walton to David Duke.

Before she lifted the mask requirements.

Sad to see Mastodon so quiet on #CongestionPricing today so I went back to Musk-land to rant about it. Here's one thing I wrote:

I think most of the suburban drivers see congestion pricing in entirely symbolic terms. It represents the abandonment of a strategy of enriching the middle class through subsidies to driving - something many of them have built their lives around. Even THOUGH they benefit, they hate the long-term implications.

"A fourth person familiar with the matter said Hochul is responding to worries raised by Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, the House minority leader who is fiercely trying to win back a Democratic majority this year."

We've known for years that Jeffries is a car-brained idiot. The success of #CongestionPricing will help Democrats win back the house, not the other way around.

RT @jessiesingernyc In the 60s and 70s, traffic deaths were higher than at any point in U.S. history.

And to be clear: The reason that fatalities declined [after that] is that we stopped pretending that common sense could make driving safe and regulated the design of automobiles to reduce the harm of inevitable mistakes when common sense inevitably failed to overcome dangerous conditions.

I figure if I see a post with hashtags, the poster is looking for wider reach and it's safe to boost. If I don't see any hashtags I try not to boost. I know there are follower's-only posts and yet this still feels polite. If you catch me boost/unboosting your post that's probably why. #Fedi #Etiquette #Fediquette
