RT @jessiesingernyc In the 60s and 70s, traffic deaths were higher than at any point in U.S. history.

And to be clear: The reason that fatalities declined [after that] is that we stopped pretending that common sense could make driving safe and regulated the design of automobiles to reduce the harm of inevitable mistakes when common sense inevitably failed to overcome dangerous conditions.

I figure if I see a post with hashtags, the poster is looking for wider reach and it's safe to boost. If I don't see any hashtags I try not to boost. I know there are follower's-only posts and yet this still feels polite. If you catch me boost/unboosting your post that's probably why. #Fedi #Etiquette #Fediquette

@cargot_robbie I just forget to use hashtags. Anything I post that's Public is something where I'm looking for wider reach; please boost it if you think your followers would appreciate it!

@cargot_robbie Good strategy! Sometimes I'll call someone out in an Unlisted reply, and it's not that I don't want it to be visible, but I don't really want it to be boosted either...

Anniversary blog post from June 4, 2010:

So we've got four clusters of factors that people take into account when choosing modes:

Availability
Value
Amenities
Glamour

And three (or so) types of mode choice:

Trip
Habit
Investment

But different types of choice weight the factors differently!

RT @samiliebman By the way, I listened in to my first NJTransit customer service and operations meeting last week (I was too late to comment). But I’d sum it up this way: lots of presentation of mediocre performance #’s and zero discussion on ways to improve.

Wait, not one but TWO "It's the X, Stupid" headlines? You don't know me well enough to call me names.

Yeah, I know, you mean it as a sort of joke, but it wasn't funny, insightful or even particularly helpful when James Carville wrote it, and it's not funny when people repeat it with whatever they want us to pay attention to now.

I'm begging you all: figure out a way to say "I think this is important, please read what I have to say about it" that doesn't involve insulting your readers!

"And crucially, the new design will add No Standing zones, a design that matches the crosstown lanes on 26th, 29th, 52nd and 55th streets. On the crosstown blocks where the DOT installed No Standing Zones on both sides of the street to provide quick curbside access for drivers who needed it, the agency found that half of the drivers who used them spots stopped for five minutes or less."

Often, transit managers are not transit riders, and answer to other bureaucrats and politicians who are also not transit riders. They do not always have the interests of transit riders, or even the general public, at heart!

Today I was again remembering how in the early 90s, after the revival of Earth Day, the success of the Montreal Protocol and the growth of concern over global warming, one cute little thing people did was to take their own cup to the cafe. Most cafes would sell coffee cheaper if you brought a cup.

It was part of a broader conversation about reducing packaging.

It disappeared after the 2000 election, the disgrace of Al Gore, and 9 months later the 9/11 attacks.

capntransit,
@capntransit@urbanists.social avatar

@stevenbodzin What do you mean? I did it today.

capntransit,
@capntransit@urbanists.social avatar

@stevenbodzin I think I did have a cup hanging off my backpack then, and I stopped for a while, but a couple years ago I visited a friend who carried some reusable tumblers around with him, and I thought I could do that.

The tumblers are much sturdier than any to-go container (rightly so) and fit in the bottle carriers on my backpack.

Some cafes don't cooperate. Some give me a small discount.

(If anyone doesn't like Amazon, I'm guessing you can find them elsewhere)

@stevenbodzin Bottom line: I think that conversation has had some setbacks, but it didn't disappear completely, and a lot of us are still trying to make it happen.
