It's fitting that on a day when I was on campus I spotted a wild beaver, and while I was enjoying the wildlife I also enjoyed listening to some talks for my ! (1/10)

Next was a thought-provoking talk by Suzanne Dikker on the neural basis of real-world social interaction, using sensors to study brain signals outside the laboratory at the University of London School of Advanced Study https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EO4w_GansP4 (3/10)

Next was a wide-ranging talk by Marianne Bertrand on the roots of gender disparities at work at the LSE. Bertrand systematically reviews the literature in this area, consistently pointing to the role of childcare and gender norms around unpaid labor as the source of most of the remaining gap here. FYI Bertrand gave a talk at the Toulouse School of Economics on a similar topic a few years later that is also great. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWpBM0ASLRQ (4/10) #economics #gender

If you were to filter out posts related to outrage about tech, Trump, and the Middle East, what would be left from your feed?

bwaber,
@bwaber@hci.social avatar

@andresmh @bkeegan Hey well at least in the evening your feed here is filled with random YouTube talks 😅

It was a packed day for me, but I was still able to fit in a bunch of talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist! (1/9)

First was an interesting talk by David Gissen on the architecture of disability at the Global Disability Innovation Hub (GDI Hub). Architecture has engaged with accessibility well before HCI, and the insight Gissen brings here is widely applicable https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uV0hxeChgY (2/9) #architecture #accessibility

I had a great conversation with Mike Walsh in Tokyo that captured many of my thoughts on generative AI, here's the link to his podcast with the recording! https://www.linkedin.com/posts/michaelwalsh_ai-generativeai-llms-activity-7194074942844379136-Nkxv?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_android

I hate the term "data analytics." By definition, analytics have to be about data. Otherwise what are you analyzing? Vibes?

@andresmh Every neighborhood I've lived in in the Boston area has gotten nicer after I moved away 😅

Kendall has so much more there now. I remember when the only restaurants were ABP, the food court next to the Coop, and Characters

bwaber,
@bwaber@hci.social avatar

@andresmh @natematias Tatte is good, so is Clover. There's also a bunch of nicer restaurants now

The male turkey on our street has been busy, and while taking in the local wildlife I was able to listen to some talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist! (1/8)

First was a slate of talks at the New York University School of Law by Marco Claudio Corradi and Julian Nowag (enforcing corporate opportunities rules), Jorge Contreras (patent hold-up), Rory Van Loo (consumer law and inequality), and John Newman (procompetitive justifications in antitrust law) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6n0lgfEIdxk (2/8)

Next was a thought-provoking panel on the Microsoft-Ireland case (in 2018) at the American Constitution Society with Debra Perlin, Alex Berengaut, Jennifer Daskal, Sharon Bradford Franklin, and Gregory Nojeim. While much of this was settled with the CLOUD Act passage afterwards, the points brought up here are still instructive when considering approaches to regulating data access and localization https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7VRyWp-hJQ (3/8) #law #data #US

bwaber,

Next was an interesting talk by Patrick Kenis on the governance of organizational networks at the Heidelberg University https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ESrUYjJKqs (4/8)
