Day 2 of going without coffee. Achieved a full night of deep, restful sleep. No wired, edgy, angst-y feelings. No compulsions about having to be useful. Taking life slow, and really enjoying the feeling. Slowness opens up a whole new world of leisurely creativity. Life is good. 🖖

ashwin,

@dancinyogi

No headaches. It's great not feeling driven by coffee, but walking at my own natural pace, to use a metaphor.

The broad acceptance of alcohol in social settings has long baffled me. Imagine if you went out to dinner with someone, and you sit down and immediately ask, "should we do some drugs while we look at the menu?"

Screw "this meeting could have been an email".

What about "this YouTube video could have been a blog post"?

ashwin,

@amberage

In 2013, I posted a blog entry venturing a well-reasoned guess at the identity of Bitcoin creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. The post was pithy, gave concrete data points, and invited the reader to draw their own conclusions.

The post was immediately censored by Reddit, saying that it violated their policy against spreading false information about a person.

A week later, Ted Nelson posted a video on YouTube, with the same guess and the same data points. Nelson didn't just give away the the data, like my rather dry blog post. The video was a fuckin' striptease, tantalizing the viewer's mind, revealing each fact dramatically. Ted Nelson's video was a hit!

Lessons learned:

  1. When you're famous, like Ted Nelson, you have something called "privilege" that lets you get your message out farther than some anonymous blog nerd.

  2. If you're going to engage the audience, you need to fuckin' entertain them. That's why Science is a little less popular than TV.

"The New Yorker" is a publication I've long enjoyed. In the 2000s, my Bohemian then-girlfriend had stacks of old issues piled on the flush tank in our meager studio in Oakland, California's roughest ghetto. The tiny place doubled as her Art studio, and my workspace. The apartment had previously been occupied by a couple of goth girls, who had launched a fashion line called "Bitch Gear". The whole place was painted plain black — walls, floor, ceiling, toilet, everything. It was High Camp to sit on the throne stoned, thumbing from cartoon to cartoon, giggling hysterically.

So I finally subscribed to the online edition, and am really digging the well-researched journalism, and the lucid, poetic quality of writing.

However, I have a bone to pick with the editors of "The New Yorker". They seem to be attempting to make some quirky modifications to the English language itself, taking it beyond the realm of ASCII.

"reëmit" instead of "re-emit"
"coöperative" instead of "co-operative"

Seriously New Yorker, WTF?!

📢 I got an A in my Neurobiology class, everyone!

The class is called Applied Biology Of Human Behavior and
it has been my favorite class ever taken.

Years ago, when I was in a Radiology Tech program, I took Human Anatomy & Physiology I and II and loved them so much and Mom was a nurse, I grew up flipping through Gray's Anatomy on the kitchen floor soooooooo.....
I'm kind of a Biology nerd and I'm addicted to Neuroscience.

That's one of my Big interests.

In 1991, my Bulgarian roommate's Mom in Bulgaria heard about "computer viruses" and freaked. She called her son and sternly warned him to be very careful around computers, and take care of his health. He tried to explain that computer viruses don't affect one's physical health. But she was just Mom. Wouldn't hear a word of his protests. He finally agreed to her terms. He teaches Computer Science now.

MACHINE LEARNING
A Nerdy Love Story

She tried to explain Information Theory to me in simple terms. "Information is that which reduces uncertainty.", she said, adjusting her glasses self consciously. I felt some uncertainty reducing.

She gave me a book by Claude Shannon. The next week, she asked me how I liked it. "It was challenging. I'm trying to make sense of the mathematical notation. Some cool ideas in there."
She smiled and handed me another copy of the same book. "WTF?! I've already read it. I'm reading it again. This conveys no information!"
"Don't judge a book by its cover.", she said, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
I skimmed the new copy. She had scribbled notes in the margins in her womanly handwriting, breaking down key concepts that she had underlined throughout.
"Thank you!", I stammered, meaning it heartily. I wasn't exactly a Cliff's Notes kind of learner, but this was challenging material, and I was grateful for the help. And there was something else. I was attracted to her so much, her mind, her body. I pushed that feeling aside, and smiled politely. I had to think and process information like the good Android I was.

I went over the new copy, over and over. She texted, and asked to meet for coffee. When we met, she handed me a third copy of the same book. I guffawed! She giggled a little, and averted her eyes. What was her new game? I was intrigued. Thumbing through the pages, I found no new writing. It was blank. Well, same as the first copy, but older. There was no information. I was puzzled, till a subtle scent tickled me. An old book smell, mixed with a lovely aroma. It was own perfume. I looked up and she was smiling at me. We made eye contact through two pairs of glasses. A new dimension had just opened in my world. It would take a lot cycles to process the flood of new information flooding my senses. I was melting.

Wonder how the folks at Mastodon see the MFM enhanced posts. I'm digging MFM, but thinking of the rest of the Fediverse.
Maybe I'll open a new Mastodon account to see if MFM looks like gibberish there.
