I’ve been sporadically making YouTube shorts over the past few months. This is the latest one, about Konica Recorder/AA35 half-frame point-and-shoot:

Ugh does anyone else see a preview text in German with no thumbnail for this YouTube link?

@erik 😬 @trumpet, do you think this is a bug?

analog_cafe,
@analog_cafe@mas.to avatar

@trumpet that makes sense. I feel like the cards were in English previously but I can’t find those posts atm. This is the first time I came across this issue and it’s an interesting one to think about!

Hey friends,

Looks like Lomography's got new Automat camera artist-series designs and placed the earlier colours on sale:

Hey friends,

There's a film photographers' competition deadline coming up with a $1,000 cash prize for the first place (and other prizes, inc. exhibition).

It's called Analog Sparks. Entry fees range from $10 to $25, which is quite reasonable in my opinion.

I took a new (to me) lens to San Francisco, the Canon FD 50mm/1.4, which I haven't had a chance to test before going (which I in hindsight realized was not very wise). I shot 4 rolls of film on the trip. Eagerly awaiting the scans to come back from the lab...

@Gargron nice things about SLRs is that if you focus through the finder and see aperture blades move, most likely you’re ok. But there’s still that wait when it comes to film, it’s like a scratch card. I like it. Hope your photos turn out as you wish they did.

Hey friends,

Google is now pretending that their "AI" bots know better than you and I about film cameras. It's in their ad for Gemini.

They have brilliant advice for a very real problem we always experience:

  • Open the back door and gently remove the film
  • Turn the motor drive
  • Gently move the advance lever back and forth

And more! https://www.analog.cafe/comments/nm99

This is great.

Hey ,

Two new* films are making it to the store shelves this month: Foma Ortho 400 and Shanghai GP3. Edit: Shanghai Shenguang 400.

I'm very curious about the fast orthochromatic film and happy to see that Shanghai is able to produce metal canisters with DX code for their (most likely rebranded) emulsion.

Hey friends,

THE BIGGEST concurrent UK film photography walk ever will take place on June 29th.

If you're in the country, this may be a fun one for you.

And by THE BIGGEST, the organizers (Analogue Wonderland and Kodak) mean it's actually bigger than any other photowalk, including digital photographers' meetups.

Trying to understand human psychology a bit here, boosts for reach are very much appreciated.

When you post an image without alt text, and someone replies with the image description for you to use, what is your typical reaction?

analog_cafe,
@analog_cafe@mas.to avatar

@stefan I write alt text on every image without fail since I joined Mastodon. But I can’t help and wonder whether, besides helping human beings, I’m training plagiarism engines or “AI” how to steal my work more efficiently.

London Drugs, a large local chain of stores that I frequent to buy Polaroid film and coffee from (they also develop and scan) has been hacked.

They've been closed for nearly a week and they say that the customer data (my data) is breached.

This hits close to home.

Meanwhile, getting disclosure out of LD is like pulling teeth.

Hey friends,

I send Community Letters every last Tuesday of every month where I share the latest news, events, and stories from the community.

In this 61st edition, I talk about various film developers (inc. Sativa Cannanol), axing another film, new apps for film photographers, and a new colour 4x5 film:

When I asked a Polaroid rep whether we could make emulsion lifts with the new Go film, they didn't have an answer.

So I tried it over the weekend — and it worked! Some samples and tips for doing it better:

https://www.analog.cafe/r/emulsion-lifts-with-polaroid-go-instant-film-d9bv

While Polaroid Go uses the same emulsion as the 600/I-Type, it's packaged differently and it only works with the Go cameras. But it's also a lot cheaper than the full-sized film and still plenty of fun.

It's always been hard to make a living as a writer, but in 2024, it's harder than ever. Dirt has published this depressing but essential essay by David Hill, a union organizer turned author, on the grim reality of writing life. "At the time the National Writers Union was founded [in 1981], $1 a word was considered a bare-minimum rate for freelance writing ... Today it is no longer considered the floor, but a ceiling."

@CultureDesk @bookstodon “I wrote maybe the best thing I’ve ever written in my life and sold it (and all rights in perpetuity) to Vice for $100.”

That’s rough.

Nikon CoolScan update. This is my second attempt at getting one. It got some damage during shipping due to insufficient packaging but it works.

It takes about 40s to scan a single frame with the 5000ED, compared to 4min with PrimeFilm XAs. CoolScan has a slightly lower resolution (tho it shows about the same amount of detail) than XA. CoolScan makes more saturated negative scans.

It’s wild how much better this 20yo scanner is than my 2yo one.

Hey friends,

I've been working on an insane amount of film development this past couple of weeks; thus, I couldn't be very active here. Also a bit tired of social media.

However, there are some news (ish) that I feel obligated to share:

Fujifilm Superia X-Tra, an ISO 400 colour 135 film has been discontinued.

https://www.analog.cafe/comments/2xgo

In the post (above) I explain why it's unexpected this time and what I hoped to hear from the company instead.

analog_cafe,
@analog_cafe@mas.to avatar

@Gargron have you tried their slide film? It's really good. They've discontinued some lines, but Velvia & Provia are still available in pretty much any format.

analog_cafe,
@analog_cafe@mas.to avatar

@Gargron it’s tons of fun! If you’re still in the US, Ektachrome (Kodak’s slide film) is probably cheaper than in the EU. It’s also extremely good (Kodak actually resurrected it a few years back, was quite a story)

So wants a payment + brokerage fees for import dues. Fair.

Unfortunately, their website won't take my payment unless I create an account. Sucks, but terrible web service is a corporate standard in 2024 so I proceed.

The website will not create my account. The UI does nothing (not even an error message). The browser console shows an endless stream of errors and messy log messages. The page is 17MB in size.

Had to resolve this via phone call (x4), like it's 1984.

😱

analog_cafe,
@analog_cafe@mas.to avatar

@jamesholden, that sounds slightly better. It's certainly an improvement over being charged and then nearly denied an opportunity to pay the charge.

Honestly, I'm more upset about how they built their website at this point. It looks like seven unpaid interns built it, with twenty managers standing over them changing "AI" for the entire workday. :akko_aaa:
