I'm a just a small town AAA graphics programmer in Chicago. I worked on Gears 5 and Gears Tactics. My work is secret, but my personal projects are not.

I like to post about my personal research, various side projects, and I like to think out loud a lot. Expect weird humor, esoteric ramblings, and occasionally also art I made out of math. I like implicit surface modeling the normal amount. Amateur spoonie. 🏳️‍⚧️

Curses are just blessings with caveats.

My ISP doesn't believe in "pager duty" or "uptime", so sometimes the internet just goes down in the middle of the night. I like to think that what happens every morning is Bob comes into the office, power cycles the office Linksys, and then the internet for half of Chicago comes back on again. When the internet goes down for multiple days it is because Bob is out sick.

you ever think about how the standard cartoon bomb (a large blue or black sphere with a big fuse coming out the top) is essentially the "save icon" of destruction, because 1) it's symbolic meaning is widely understood, and 2) it's an anachronism that is widely recognized only for its symbolic meaning as its real life counterpart is long obsolete?

ok I got another recording of the thing finally. This was recorded on a faster computer than my laptop, so unfortunately it doesn't have the really cool long convergence artifact thing going on. I really hate what the video encoding is doing here, but such is life.

it's a video of a rotating abstract ring thingy that is light by several lights which create colorful shadows. the video encoding is terrible, but it looks ok I guess

Does anyone know how to make #VisualStudio stop suggesting auto completions like this? This is driving me up the fucking wall.

EDIT: I have solved the problem, please stop guessing.

Breaking News: Portal to Hell Opened in Chicago Deep Tunnel

"The deep tunnel runoff banishment vortex presents a complete solution to eliminating any and all storm sewer overflow to dare enter our city's glorious combined sewer system. Rejoice! Chicago will be vexed by liquid shit overflowing into our streets and basements NO MORE!" said Dr. Blasphael, chairperson of Chicago's department of water subjugation, in today's opening ceremony.

ok so I was trying to figure out what year the magic purple honda civic 3 door hatchback I had back in college was because my insomnia has been really awful the last two days and I had this great idea that I should make a game where you have to figure out how to drive the magic purple honda civic 3 door hatchback I had back in college, and anyway I totally failed to find it but I stumbled upon this amazing and improbable website and I don't know what's real anymore: https://www.lingscars.com/personal-car-leasing/honda/civic/4374098-2.0-eHEV-Sport-(143bhp)-Hatchback-5dr-Petrol-electric-Hybrid-CVT

It's a long shot, but it would be really funny if Microsoft and Google both capsize when the AI bubble pops, resulting in Valve taking over as the dominant home PC OS and buying the xbox brand for cheap, a sudden surge of corporate interest funding ReactOS, and a bewildered Viktor Lofgren waking up one morning to discover that Marginalia had become the world's dominant search engine over night. Chrome users however would still continue to refuse to switch to Firefox.

I've been aware of the idea since my late teens or early twenties or so, but I've really come to appreciate in the last couple of years to what degree the information your senses tell you is subjective to the point of approaching total fiction.

I created something perfect on accident yesterday, and I cannot show any of you.

Not because it is a secret or anything, just because I can't record it without it turning into total garbage.

It is beautiful and perfect I want to make a whole game out of it and also Gnome's screen recording thing just completely shits itself when I try to record it, so you'll just have to pretend you understand just how good this all is.

CPUs always seem kinda confused when you hold them at 100% load for more than a few seconds

I added some lights to the splat renderer. The lighting is ray traced on the CPU and the colors are uploaded as new vertex colors for rendering.

The program is currently single threaded (I'm planning on moving it into a thread pool later), and the ray tracing loop is time constrained to ensure that the frame is always presented on time. If I were to raise the splat count further, the convergence time on the lighting and shadows would become more noticeable.

A hollowed out sphere with holes on opposite sides is seen rotating. Near each hole is a sphere to create interesting shadows within the hollow sphere. There are two moving lights above the object, one is a blue light and the other is an orange light. The lights cast hard shadows upon the rotating model.

ok so it only took me two months of having a new laptop to realize this but I just realized tonight that I finally have a decent portable to use with the realsense camera I got like three years ago and then stuffed into a drawer. Which is to say, that I remembered that I have a 3D camera, and yes

I can't be bothered to look up the facts about the windows 11 ai thing, but I'm genuinely baffled as to who wants this, as well as why they need special ai hardware to make a keylogger that also watches you look at porn or whatever else it is that people use computers for
