Alright, @mirlo, a #Bandcamp alternative who hangs out here in the Fediverse, is just $55 short of making its Kickstarter goal! Seems very likely they'll be funded at this point, which is great news for musicians and music fans looking to create a better music industry.

If you want to kick in a few dollars (and maybe your donation will be the one that puts them over the top!), here's the link:

@badastro My local frogs are easier to see… they hang out under the edge of the hot tub cover. It’s nice and warm and damp.

I’m going to be trying to cut two 4” diameter holes through a 7” thick concrete wall (with steel rebar inside) this week. I’ve been buying lots of stuff to prepare #BetterLivingThroughPowerTools

How waterproof are iPhones? I used my iPhone 14pro as a snorkeling camera back in February (it was already over a year old, so I decided to risk it), washed it out and it seemed fine. Did it again a few times. No problem. However the battery is getting weak so I took it in to Apple for a battery replacement. They opened it up and found corrosion due to water damage so didn’t replace the battery… I only buy even numbered iPhones so hopefully it keeps working until the 16 comes out.

Also. I’m going to get a good dedicated underwater camera to replace the Ricoh one I got about 8 yrs ago.

I am very sad to report death May 17 at age 89 of Gordon Bell, famous computer pioneer, a founder of Computer Museum in Boston, and a force behind the @ComputerHistory her in Silicon Valley, and good friend since the 1980s.
He succumbed to aspiration pneumonia in Coronado, CA.
I'm told there will be a "Celebration of Life" service in August in Silicon Valley.
(Another fallen giant, we attended a similar service in April for another, Nobelist Arno Penzias.)

@JohnMashey Thanks for letting us know. I was lucky enough to meet him a few times, he was a huge influence on the development of computing via the PDP11 and VAX architectures.

"Are you decent?"

Not morally, but I'm wearing pants if that's what you're asking.

"Are you repugnant?"

I probably am to conservatives, but I don't smell weird if that's what you're getting at.

adrianco,
@adrianco@mastodon.social avatar

@hazelweakly So, you are indecently pugnant perhaps?

adrianco,

@hazelweakly That reminds me, will we be able to enjoy your pugnance in person at Monitorama next month?

So I'm probably going to be nerd sniped into developing a Jupyter notebook to examine the question of how well are mid income families 2 adults and 2 kids doing relative to how well their parents were doing 30 years earlier. I'm going to use a dirichlet prior over the weights on a 5 item CPI based expense index. The missing part is paired nominal earnings of people and their parents... Anyone know a dataset #statistics #data #economics @economics@a.gup.pe

adrianco,
@adrianco@mastodon.social avatar

@dlakelan @economics@a.gup.pe There’s a bunch of free economic data in the AWS open data program e.g. https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/search/results?searchTerms=income+data

I’m in Denver/Broomfield for a few days for the SW2con (used to be Gluecon) event. Giving a talk on Weds. meeting a bunch of old friends. https://www.sw2con.com/#agenda

#SW2con next up I’m in the Code-assists track hearing from Aso Kukic of Sourcegraph about their Cody tool. Start by defining levels of Code AI assist. Human-initiated, AI initiated, and AI led.

adrianco,
@adrianco@mastodon.social avatar

#SW2con Dennis Pilarinos, CEO of Unblocked taking about security and trust for AI apps. Applying these patterns to the new AI apps.

adrianco,
@adrianco@mastodon.social avatar

#SW2con good talk on what to think about when considering AI trust and security issues.

#SW2con IBM Fellow Trent Grey-Donald talking in detail about how code assistants work. I was chatting to Trent last night and discovered we have a bunch of friends in common. The hallway track here is very good, I usually meet some new interesting people…

adrianco,
@adrianco@mastodon.social avatar

#SW2con Intent matters a lot, the flow of how it works is shown… the IBM example was turning COBOL into Java, unlike the earlier GitHub examples in Python and Cody examples in JavaScript. They can all do most languages but for a specific use case and language one or the other products is likely to be better tuned.

#SW2con Code Assistants - the road ahead. Measure user feedback, pick the right context, combine LLMs with established techniques, go beyond coding.

#SW2con attending afternoon sessions related to RAG. First up: Building Something Real with Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) - Jon Bratseth, CEO, Vespa.ai

#SW2con more advice on RAG from Jon Bratseth - good level of detail on how they work and what’s important.

#SW2con Joe Shockman co-founder of Grounded AI up next. Goal of making today’s workloads more efficient and avoiding the pitfalls we’ve been seeing.

#SW2con A Recipe for Fine-tuning with Direct Preference Optimization (DPO) - Jesse Kipp, Director of Engineering, Cloudflare - good reference to a recent paper http://arxiv.org/abs/2405.00732

#SW2con I took a break to work on my talk for tomorrow (I’m the keynote before lunch) and now we are back for the final set of day 1 keynotes with: KAITO: Building an Open Source Platform for AI - Lachlan Evenson, Principal PDM Manager, Microsoft Azure. Good advice on how open models work, nice demo of Kubernetes deployment and some next steps.

@joy The event is in Colorado, there are people from all over the place. Hawaii, West coast, a bunch of locals, Texas, East coast and I think some from Europe.

adrianco,
@adrianco@mastodon.social avatar

@joy This conference is a deliberate outlier. It’s always been whatever is the latest stuff and it’s always been held here because it’s a long way from anywhere and that acts as a filter to make people engage more.
