Tell me about automations that you have set up for yourself to improve your life, even in the smallest of ways.

I recently set up some @KeyboardMaestro macros; when I unlock or lock my computer while it's docked at my desk, it'll turn my office lights on & off automatically.

Verso,
@Verso@mastodon.social avatar

@niclake I have Hue lights and I have an automation that turns one on near the door from the garage to the house. I never come home to a dark house and have to fumble.

Verso, to Shortcuts
@Verso@mastodon.social avatar

Is there a way in #Shortcuts or #KeyboardMaestro or other automation (it's for my Macs) to point something at my browser and have it list all the duplicate tabs I have open? Bonus points if there is an easy way to close all but one of them.

When I look this up all I get is keyboard shortcuts for web browsers which isn't helpful. I'll rant about Apple's propensity for naming things stupidly later.

@kjaymiller woohoo! Sometimes that's the biggest win. (:

Final Cut Pro for iPad has a dozen export options that range from ‘awful’, to ‘awful, and low-resolution’. It’s surprising just how bad the 4K HEVC footage it creates is; there’s no control over bitrate or number of passes or anything. And there’s no Compressor app on iPad to queue up multiple exports. Big thumbs down — if you want good quality video, you basically have to send it to a Mac first

Verso,
@Verso@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith so I can shoot pretty amazing video with this "desktop class" machine from Apple, and using Apple's own tools on the same device which contains the beefiest processor they make, my export will either be hot garbage or reheated garbage?

I have a question: I have a mini with a hardwired USB-A cable. I have varying levels of success getting it to work properly with my USB-C only MacBook Pro.

Have you tried this with a dock or an adapter that makes it work for you? If so please name names!

That said, I am also not averse to completing The Circle of StreamDeck Life, and selling the one I have to finance the one I want (: so if you're in the market for a classic, HMU (:

Verso,
@Verso@mastodon.social avatar

@matthewcassinelli I think the regular mk 2 is USB-C, or at least has a port where you plug in whatever cable you want. Being stuck with A forever is it going to work. The more I try to use it, the more frustrated I get when it randomly nopes out.

Verso,
@Verso@mastodon.social avatar

@matthewcassinelli I have a mini which is hardwired so I can't swap it out. That's why mine might be headed to a new home...

Verso,
@Verso@mastodon.social avatar

@matthewcassinelli @techphotoguy well if I get a new one I'll totally use that code. If someone has a Mk 2 they want to sell to finance an XL though...

(If I say it enough it'll be true, right?)

"New Windows AI feature records everything you’ve done on your PC"

This is a new AI-powered feature called "Recall", lets you search and retrieve your past activities.

This a huge win? A privacy nightmare?

Once your on screen data gets swallowed by the AI, will there be any way to pry it back out?

Anyone out there a fan of air fryers?

Went to a dinner last night, folks were raving about their air fryers. This something worth exploring? A fad?

I'm particularly interested in cooking veggies, like broccoli, zucchini, etc. This better than roasting in an oven?

#Cooking #AirFryer

Verso,
@Verso@mastodon.social avatar

@davemark I have a countertop Breville oven that has an "air fryer" mode which seems to be "super convection" mode at a high temperature. I have used it to reheat French fries and to cook frozen items that were breaded/fried, and it is pretty great for those.

Context: My full size oven is old, and takes forever to heat (to the wrong temp), so I use the Breville for most oven things and it's great. I bet air frying veggies would be awesome!

An example of how a journalism org can provide vital context: The NY Times goes deep on the epic hypocrisy of prominent Republicans, who've been parroting antisemitic tropes for years but are suddenly -- and cynically -- pretending otherwise.

"Prominent Republicans have seized on campus protests to assail what they say is antisemitism on the left. But for years they have mainstreamed anti-Jewish rhetoric."

I have a Sonos Roam speaker (waterproof wireless triangular one). I know I can boss it around with my voice to play music. Is there a way to have it pass things (like Reminders for example) to Siri? I doubt it but I figured if anyone did know they hang out on Mastodon and might tell me.

Verso,
@Verso@mastodon.social avatar

@matthewcassinelli I hadn't thought about adding another service to the mix. Maybe I don't have to get one of those notepads for the shower after all!

Verso,
@Verso@mastodon.social avatar

@Aaron I only have the one, and it is almost exclusively a shower speaker. Since 99% of what I want it to do is play music in the shower, I haven't bothered with checking out any integration besides "use my Apple Music subscription" so I don't know if there's any way to tell it to record a reminder. I guess we will find out together (:

Verso,
@Verso@mastodon.social avatar

@airwhale I think adding it to HomeKit only gives me a way to play music on that device along with other airplay devices at the same time. So far I can't find any other way it is useful, but I'm not done looking yet (:
