if y'all have missed this: the insta travelog couple vueltaalmundoenmoto were assaulted while visiting india as part of a world tour, the man beaten to a pulp and the woman gangraped, and the chairperson of the National Commision For Women had this to say about a foreigner opining on it.

Just a week ago she was talking about mamata tolerating rape in her state and demanded president's rule in WB, the pot has to call the kettle black when it's election season huh

Something I've noticed a lot lately, is that especially Boomer women, but honestly, women in general, don't seem to ask for what they want or need in a direct way. I notice this a lot with my Mom and her friends. Instead of just asking for what they need directly they tell a story, to ask in a roundabout way. For instance, my Mom needed help this morning, and Instead of just saying, "Hey, I dropped my remote, can you pick it up for me?" She tells a one minute story about what happened, no ask, and eventually I get the point, and then suggest that I come pick it up. Or if one of her friends wants to do something like have a birthday party for a friend, they don't say "We should have a party!" They say, It's Sarah's Birthday coming up, you know she likes surprises, what does everyone think we should do?"

I often wonder if this is why older people think younger women are rude and demanding, because younger people often just ask for what they want and need in a more direct way. But also it's probably just straight up sexism, because men are supposed to make decisions, and women are supposed to make suggestions.

What do you all think? Is this just me? Have you experienced something similar?

Theorem_Poem,
@Theorem_Poem@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr Millenial butting in. I DID grow into asking for stuff directly in personal relationships early on, thankfully. But on the job? I was quaking in my boots! Especially since I do actually love to teach. There was SO much guilt about asking for more. 1/2

@RickiTarr My elder sis and my first kind man-boss coached the h*ck outta me. They told me not not half -ass it - either work as a volunteer and have the joy of teaching kids otherwise could not afford schooling, or, if I WAS working for a for-profit, go all in. The made me do practice interviews in which I literally asked for 2x or 3x that I expected.
9 outta 10, it worked. I quoted 2x, HR "bargained me down" to 1.5x. Most of us simply don't know how many funds corporates have lying about.

@RickiTarr yep. Scream on the inside for a day or they'll have you screaming on the outside soon enough.

Okay, let me try to ask this question, in a coherent way!

When we hear certain kinds of music, arrangements and tones, we associate them with feelings and emotions, like this sounds magical or whimsical, this sounds bouncy and happy, or dark and tragic. Do you think that is this is innate, like the combination of certain notes and tones just illicit these feelings in most people or is it because we've seen it related to these kinds of emotions on the radio or in movies and TV?

Theorem_Poem,
@Theorem_Poem@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr Both, I think, but I'm going to lean towards "mostly learnt association". For example, ragas like this appear sad/forlorn to people who are not used to Hindustani classic music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHn6a-_Dt5w

It is not sad/happy. It is just a raga to invoke the rains or call the monsoons.

A while ago my wife introduced me to Stand In Pride, where queer people can find stand-in family members for support and indeed often for big life events — when their biological families don’t show up. And so it came to pass that a couple of weeks ago I had the singular honour of walking Taylor down the aisle to marry Ruth. Family is what you make it. Love endures. Join me in wishing them a long and happy life together! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

A group shot of the wedding party on a staircase. Taylor’s wife is wearing a kilt in red, with a black jacket, and they’re kissing; other people are arrayed behind them in formal wear. Everyone’s smiling. 😊

    Okay, you can choose a real person you'd love to see a movie made about, who is the person, and who would you cast in the starring role?

    I'm picking Tiny Tim, played by Finn Wolfhard.

    I had to ask him, "Jats don't have much of a #cuisine, am I right? This #recipe, this dish, that dish?" And he was like, "I don't think so".

    Roti with ghee, Daal, Chutney paste of green chillies and onion, and fried pumpkins or Kaddu ki sabzi. Pretty simple, if you ask me.

    @Deus you'll find a lot of overlap between Rajasthani and Haryanvi cuisine (I wouldn't prefer to call it Jat cuisine). But bajare ki kichhdi and ghewar is perhaps the only Haryanvi for that I miss, living in Bangalore.

    I'll be 37 next month. I don't feel old AT ALL. Feels like I've barely started. All those internetty jokes are not landing... my back does not hurt, I was unhealthier at 17, and I am growing less conservative by day.
    The only thing that makes me feel older is the grey hair taking over my head and former students getting married 😁 Am I doing something wrong? Am I just immature?

    Elder besties, when did the feeling of "oh I'm middle aged now" kick in for y'all?
