@Sylkeweb@mastodon.social

I love to be online and I am really happy to have found the non-centralised social media services of the Fediverse. So these days I’m testing my way through them, trying to find out which services work well together.
So far I‘ve looked at interactions between these:
#Mastodon
#Pixelfed
#Friendica
#Firefish
#Chirp.social (groups)
#Gup.pe (groups)
#Hubzilla
#WordPress
#Diaspora
[There will be more]

Have you ever noticed an account on here labelled "Automated" or "Bot"?

It means the account is a bot, operating automatically without a human doing the posting.

This might sound odd, but there are many useful and entertaining #bots, for example posting sports results or weather bulletins or public domain art. Other bots run interactive games of chess or D&D campaigns or text adventures.

Find out more at:

➡️ https://fedi.tips/why-are-some-accounts-marked-bot-on-mastodon/

...and some good bots to follow:

➡️ https://fedi.directory/tag/bots/

Sylkeweb,

@feditips I’m running an account that is not really a bot account on Friendica. There you can’t set it to being an “automated account” in the settings but I made it a so called ‘news account’. It shows up as Automated Account on Mastodon. 🤷🏼 In this case that’s at least half true (I automatically republish items from an RSS feed and also manually add posts), but in other cases news accounts might be totally manual work, so I don’t really understand why Mastodon is doing that.

Sylkeweb,

@feditips I had a small conversation with the usually well informed server admin but he couldn’t shed much light either and agreed with me that a news account doesn’t necessarily have to be an automated account. I think this is one of those cases where different services have made use of the sometimes not very specific AP protocol in different ways.
I don’t think it’s intended to be used with RSS as a rule, there is no such specification on the settings page. I chose it as I post news articles.

#followerpower #fediverse

what do we have to do to make the #ActivityPub plugin attractive to more #WordPress users? We are currently at 4000+ active users on WordPress.org + the WordPress.com users.

What you are looking for should be the setup under Marketing Tools. Here you connect your existing Mastodon (or other social media) account to your blog. Once you‘ve done that you should be prompted during the post publishing process to create a post to be sent to your Mastodon account. I described this (with screenshots) in my blog post a while ago, look for “Connecting your Mastodon account to the blog“:
https://sylkeweb.com/2023/10/15/wordpress-and-the-fediverse/

Sylkeweb,

@pfefferle @lifewithtrees @manualdousuario @techaddressed

I‘ve updated my blog post about the interconnectivity of Fediverse services with a new table. There are still many gaps where I need to test more but here we go for now:
https://sylkeweb.com/2023/10/15/testing-the-fediverses-interconnectivity-how-it-all-began-or-the-fediverse-is-more-than-mastodon/

Sylkeweb,

@mastodonmigration thank you but at the moment it‘s really mostly being a “user” and just noting down my observations while I can. 😅 I haven’t got time to delve deeper for another two months most likely.

What makes someone a “reply guy” to you? A poll for science…

(This poll allows* multiple choices. Boost for reach plz 🚀)

EDIT: Trying to redraft to fix multi-choice issue.

Sylkeweb,

@shellsharks someone who is belittling what I said in my post, without understanding the wider circumstances (not even trying to imagine them) and just wants to shine through his own snarky response.

mho, to mastodon

It seems like it's not the UI or the usability, that get's people to leave #Mastodon nowadays but - small, yet vocal and totally not self-critical - parts of the community, that can't stop lecturing others about the #Fediverse and how to act/post/comment here or about what.
German Mastodon had the ridiculous debate about #Zoom, other parts similar stuff (scolding someone for #bw-photos... really?).
Maybe the recent update helps people get it together, otherwise it will get even quieter here.

Sylkeweb,

@mho
So far I haven’t seen too much of that personally but yeah, it can get annoying seeing comments like that. The problems between users have many facets:

Sylkeweb,

@mho
A) A lot of newcomers are used to social media services where all users have more or less the same experience and are not aware that there are so many different things at play here, not only the differences between the likes of Mastodon, Friendica, Hubzilla but also already between the user interfaces used. Using a the web interface is one thing, accessing your timeline through an app or a web client another one.

Sylkeweb,

@mho
They all give you different features and even call things by different names. It’s a steep learning curve if you are willing and able to spend some time on understanding all of that.
B) The unwillingness of some people to even understand certain features like CW. The unwillingness of other people to not accept that some users are better being muted or blocked if they don’t want to see their posts.

Sylkeweb,

@mho
C) The attitude of some of the longtime users (yes, sorry). It does not help at all to tell people who are not happy with some of the aspects of the Fediverse to set up their own servers if they are not technically minded. It also does not help to expect that all of the newcomers will play by their book.

jupiter_rowland, to random

I'm tempted to add the following preamble to all my posts and comments. This would answer a lot of questions right away and maybe leave nothing unclear.

Preamble

IMPORTANT: I am not on Mastodon. I am on Hubzilla. Hubzilla is not a Mastodon instance. Hubzilla is a wholly different project in the Fediverse. The Fediverse is not only Mastodon. The Fediverse has never been only Mastodon. And Hubzilla is not a fork of Mastodon either.

Mastodon was not even here first. The first was StatusNet from 2008 which later became GNU social. Then came Friendica in 2010. And Hubzilla is from 2015 and based on a project from 2012. Mastodon was launched in 2016. It was immediately federated with all three because it spoke a language that these three spoke, too. Except for GNU social, all are still federated with one another to this day. And this is normal, legal and fully intentional.

We aren't the intruders. Technically speaking, Mastodon is the intruder.

Hubzilla has features that Mastodon doesn't have. Hubzilla has an unlimited character count where Mastodon has a limit of 500 characters. Hubzilla can create various ways of text formatting such as bold type, italics, code blocks, lists or headlines; Mastodon can display them now, but it can't create them. Hubzilla can embed hyperlinks; Mastodon toots only support URLs in plain sight. Hubzilla can do both quotes and "quote-tweets", and it doesn't have to resort to screenshots for either. And Hubzilla always mentions users by their full name, not by their short name like Mastodon.

When Mastodon was launched with its self-imposed restrictions, Hubzilla had had all these features for almost four years already. Friendica had had the same features for almost six years already. And many of these features, including longer posts and text formatting, have been available on all other Fediverse projects since they were created.

Thus, I will use features that are not available on Mastodon even though Mastodon users could read this. I will not refrain from writing over 500 characters in one post, and I will not refrain from using text formatting just because Mastodon users aren't used to that.

We were here first. And we won't limit ourselves just because you're limited by the software you're using. We will continue to make use of features that you don't have. Deal with it.

Unfortunately, the target audience of this, Mastodon users, won't read it because it's too long. Not to mention that it'd require a boatload of content warnings and filter-triggering hashtags; see below.

#Fediverse #Mastodon #Friendica #Hubzilla #MastodonIsNotTheFediverse #NotOnlyMastodon #CharacterLimit #CharacterLimits #500Characters #TextFormatting #Quotes #QuoteTweets #QuoteToots #Long #LongPost #LongPosts #CWLong #CWLongPost #Meta #CWMeta #FediMeta #FediverseMeta #Fedisplaining #CWFedisplaining

Sylkeweb,

@jupiter_rowland I think most people just want something that works the way they are used to it - the same experience for all. Not everybody is inclined to learn everything there is to learn about the Fediverse, and some people simply don’t have the time. That’s fine by me. As I said, they can mute or block me if they can’t cope with that. And I‘ll ignore/mute/block them if they keep badgering me for any reason. I don’t have to engage.

Sylkeweb,

@crazy2bike @helpers @sascha @utopiarte @arti
Mastodon auf c.im kann 5000 Zeichen, nicht 500.

Reminder to self: always post the best photos of a photo group on Pixelfed (or Friendica or WordPress etc.) in the first four positions so that other services like Mastodon (or Firefish etc.) show those!

The ones showing up here are mostly fine but there are more and I prefer some of them over the ones showing up in my Mastodon feed.

The #WordPress implementation of the #ActivityPub protocol is total crap (at least for free blogs).

I am giving up on that for longer texts.

Back to posting threads and putting a link to #Tumblr for the full text.

WordPress FediBlog Accounts - Fedi Posting Bug

Further testing today confirms unpredictable behavior with new posts and updates.

  • New WP posts not appearing. Unfollowing and re-Following seems to clear it up for a bit. Refreshing sometimes works.

  • WP updates do not always get reflected. Refreshing sometimes works.

If anyone is experiencing same, please reply!

Please elevate to WordPress if anyone knows someone there.

I noticed that my blog Sylkeweb.com federated yesterday morning’s posts to this instance (mastodon.social) but not to my main one (c.im). The same thing seems to be happening with my pixelfed.social account at the moment. Something odd is going on with that c.im account anyway, it also really does not like my hub.hubzilla.de account either. Most annoying.

NEW! Marketing Your WordPress Blog on Mastodon

Did you know you can now automatically post abstracts of your WordPress blog posts to one or more Mastodon accounts? This works for all WordPress accounts!

Check out this step by step guide: Market your WordPress blog post to Mastodon >>> https://mastodonmigration.wordpress.com/2023/10/15/market-your-wordpress-blog-post-to-mastodon

This is different from the other new ability to "attach" your WordPress blog to the Fediverse: Create a WordPress blog attached to the Fediverse >>> https://mastodonmigration.wordpress.com/2023/10/12/create-a-wordpress-account-attached-to-the-fediverse/

#WordPress

Sylkeweb,

@OWGF @mastodonmigration
Yes, you get a Fediverse account. Try putting this identifier into the search field on Mastodon (don’t forget to add the @ at the beginning) and see what comes up. Maybe you need to post something from your blog first for this to work but I think it should work straightaway. Mastodon should find you and when you click on that result, it will present you with what I call a dummy user page with the information that it receives from WordPress about you.

Sylkeweb,

@OWGF @mastodonmigration
All the information that appears on that page is what you entered in your WordPress settings, so you edit there. The main drawback is that this dummy page might not ever get updated with any changes you make afterwards. See mine here, it’s still called Sylkeweb 2, instead of Sylkeweb Too: https://c.im/@sylkeweb.com@sylkeweb.com

Sylkeweb,

@mastodonmigration it still has not updated. I think it probably will at some point but my experience is that it often takes quite some time.

Sylkeweb,

@mastodonmigration maybe it’s the browser cache. 🤔
