I can't figure out if this is a good blogpost topic or not, but I've been thinking about how many conversations I see about human behavior in software overindex on like, differences between people* and not within-individual variation**

Overall malleability of our own traits and states over time is fascinating and underexplored in a very essentialist kind of culture***

  • "all managers are like x"

** "some days I am like x and some days I am like y"

*** I find tech to be very essentialist

When I joined a big four consultancy in 2004, you had to be very very careful about long term placements with clients for tax reasons.
Now in 2024 government is making blanket 'insider ir35' favouring employed consultancies and zero rights employment.
Utter nonsense.

PragmTeams,

@antlerboy

Interesting. In #Germany, "insider ir35" would most likely be called "Scheinselbständigkeit" (roughly, "bogus self-employment"), and get you and your client into severe trouble with tax authorities.

Still so needed :-(

I spent two week in the Manchester Royal Infimary with my dad over Christmas - almost nobody introduced themselves, nobody had a name badge I could read... they often just barged in and 'did things'. This was on the wall though!

@antlerboy Can't read the labels - what's the Redshirt, please?

@antlerboy Why? Remember it's the Blueshirts that get to announce "He's dead, Jim."

Growing a community & audience isn't my only goal, but it IS a goal for me on platforms where I share scientific work. So it's interesting that unlike other platforms where I discuss science, achieving popular posts on mastodon doesn't seem to encourage following (granted, I keep contextual information low on here since dealing with some waves of harassment, that's undoubtedly a factor).

It's commensurately hard for me to find folks to follow here so I can see why many scientists aren't here.

@grimalkina Another useful feature I'd like to see here, too: showing a bit of the bio text when you hover an avatar or handle with your mouse. Might help with mansplaining, too.

I work with multiple screens (no really, loads of screens) and it's is crazy how much the position of something affects my relationship to it.
The screen directly in front of me and up high dominates. If I put my video meetings up there, I am paying attention! But if I accidentally open social media on that screen... I'm done for the day!

PragmTeams,
@PragmTeams@social.tchncs.de avatar

@antlerboy What is your purpose of having multiple screens, at the same time?

PragmTeams,
@PragmTeams@social.tchncs.de avatar

@antlerboy That's quite interesting and reflects what I've seen from many facilitators.

I've deliberately abstained from mounting more than one monitor onto my desk, and stick with a single one (though pretty large), because I felt more screens would grant me options that most participants don't have.

When I'm forced to switch between virtual desktops and the windows on them, I feel and see what they're feeling and seeing, and my speed adjusts to theirs, automatically.

When it comes to meetings, I am told that among my management peers, I have the reputation of having a structure fetish. I insist on an agenda and notes for every meeting (except confidential one-on-ones), and on cross-references to existing documentation, applicable issues tracked in an issue tracker, or wiki pages.

Your thoughts?

PragmTeams,
@PragmTeams@social.tchncs.de avatar

@xahteiwi All of them ;-)

It is a tragedy that each and every #gathering of people goes by the umbrella term of "#meeting" now.

There is a huge number of formats we can pick the most suitable from, depending on the intended #outcome. They're requiring different amounts of #ceremony.

I'd rather widen my #facilitation skills than bash the "meeting" straw man.

PragmTeams,
@PragmTeams@social.tchncs.de avatar

@xahteiwi Not my intention to insinuate. I apologize.

It's so insidious how difficult it is to maintain careful, evidence-based work in the world when you get compared to hot takes, short term thinking, and auto generated content. It creeps in in ways you don't even realize, to your sense of your own velocity and your guesses about people's perceptions & what they give money to. It feels quite Sisyphean sometimes to be an evidence scientist but as I learned in phenomenology...you do it because it is meaningful to do it, not because there's an end.

@grimalkina I feel you and I'm following you because you are doing this hard, thorough work.

A blog post by @grimalkina on the sense of , specifically in software teams.

"Belonging isn’t just about interpersonal and it isn’t just about individual optimal . Perhaps is about what we owe to each other.

And at work, we communicate heavily about what we expect from people because they are in a . What about what people expect for themselves, because of their role?"

Several pointers to papers that I'll read.

#MyersBriggs #PersonalityTests is popular and that is about the only thing it has going for it. In reality it is no better than rolling die and assigning people a personality profile based on the die roll.

  • Carl Jung's ideas are at the base of the test. Unfortunately Jung's work has never been empirically tested. Hint when your base level construct is unsound you might have a train wreck on your hands.

"Useful" in that it points some people to the brand-new idea of #diversity (formerly "irrational behavior" that needs to be addressed by monologues on "why you should see it my way").

Harmful in that it tries to boil down the #complex to the #complicated, with no proper foundation because there can't be one. Especially harmful in its management-by-psychotest form: we'll "understand" each other much better once we've properly labelled ourselves, for life.
