Narshada, to shortstory

A quick reminder, I released a new short story today: Mycelium, a dark fungal fantasy.

Find out what happens when our protagonist moves to a small rural cottage, and decides to investigate the odd mould growing inside.

Free to read on my Substack blog.

#WritersCoffeeClub #Writing 29. What are your grammar rules to live by and grammar rules to break?

𝐓𝐨 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐛𝐲:

Oxford commas.

Break up run-on sentences, preferably with full stops. (Periods)

Avoid adverbs where possible.

Do you 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 need that comma?

Vary sentence length.

Omit needless words.

𝐓𝐨 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤:

Any and all at any time, gleefully and with wild abandon—provided it does not obscure or obfuscate, and is in service to the narrative.

Narshada,

@siblingpastry I do the “that” thing too, although I’m more of a, “do you really need that ‘which’, and/or should it be a ‘that’?”

I remember reading something that said most “which’s” can and should be substituted for “that’s” and I became very aware of how often I did use which when I meant that.

Narshada,

@siblingpastry Those were good examples! Thanks for that. I understand for the most part, it’s just a habit from speaking.

#WritersCoffeeClub 28MAR2024: Do you prefer to write protagonist-driven stories or ensembles? Why?

For short stories I’ve mostly written protagonist-driven. I find the form lends itself to focussing on one or two main characters.

My novel however, has an ensemble cast, with a main and secondary protagonist, and several supporting characters, as well as a main antagonist. I’m looking forward to getting properly stuck into outlining this soon, hopefully.

#WritersCoffeeClub 25: Question for unpublished authors. Do you intend to publish? What's your timeline? What holds you back?

I would love to publish. Currently I have no specific timeline.

holding me back: ADHD—inability to concentrate for long periods on a project. Finding time to write, I have a daughter with a disability and other responsibilities and hobbies/interests. Perfectionism—I can’t write my novel until I’ve got more of the plot & magic system figured out. Fear of failure.

@actuallyautistic I feel like we really need to develop healthy routines.

I've been working on getting off for a long time now. My viewing habits have changed significantly. Partly thanks to , which works well but is still in its infancy.

We need openly folks both as and as of the platform and the as a whole so that it reflects our needs.

Its not either screaming bloody murder or silently accepting everything. 🖖

Narshada,

@haui @actuallyautistic You inspired me to start an ADHD channel, but unfortunately I cannot currently get onto the site. Might be due to my work network, but YT works fine here.

I’m getting a “cannot create a secure connection” error.

Narshada,

@haui @actuallyautistic Turned off Wi-if and the site works fine, so it was a work network thing.

Narshada,

@haui @actuallyautistic I will, thanks! Currently researching instances—any recommendations gratefully recieved. I’m in the UK if that matters at all.

I’ve just finished this very enjoyable, pan-historical garden fantasy (is garden fantasy a genre? It is now!), ‘Threading the Labyrinth’ by Tiffani Angus.

Narshada,

@oarditi @bookstodon I’ve yet to start mine, too many other books in the waiting list!

Narshada,

@oarditi @bookstodon I’ll bet. We need to see if we can convince Tiff to join Masto…

#WritersCoffeeClub 26 Would you consider recording your own audiobook?

Absolutely! I’ve done some VO work in the past, narrating stories for podcasts, (including my own,) so would love to.

In fact, I recorded myself narrating my short story, “Hoard,” which you can listen to for free here:

https://open.substack.com/pub/partshavedape/p/hoard?r=awwbv&utm_medium=ios&utm_campaign=post

I even do voices for the characters!

#WritersCoffeeClub Jan 31: Where do you write?

Even though we began moving house in Sept 23, we only got the final boxes in a week or so ago. My desk is behind boxes, so currently I write from my armchair, with my laptop on the coffee table. Terrible for my posture, but not permanent.

Narshada,

Also, I did like to go to a local cafe and write, (it was a large chain, I’m sorry I’m awful I know but I really do prefer their coffee,) but where we moved to is a small village with no coffee shops. There are a couple of cafes though. Maybe tomorrow I’ll head out on an excursion and see if I like any of them.

Shit take of the year, so far… the product has a roughly 3 month wait time.

I dare say that there is no reason to market an item when demand outstrips supply.

Narshada,

@mjgardner @brns @philsplace @appleinsider @CmdrTaco @mayor

Not forgetting that the only reason podcasts are so named is because of the iPod, spawning an entire category of entertainment.

Narshada,

@mayor @mjgardner @brns @philsplace @appleinsider @CmdrTaco

Hmm. Not sure. When I tried to explain my podcast to my boomer father, I used the analogy, “internet radio show”. So maybe something like netrad or similar portmanteau?

Narshada,

@mayor @mjgardner @brns @philsplace @appleinsider @CmdrTaco

Quite possibly. I’m glad it got depreciated though due to connotations with fishing and Netscape!

A friend asked me to write lyrics about a badger for a death metal song we’re doing together. A short Google later:

Badger

Eyes flash in the night
White stripes on pelt black as the grave
Claws that dig and eviscerate
A sett of hungry mouths await

In the dawn’s new light we hide
Awaiting the fade, crepuscular
Shallow pits to leave our shit
In lands urban, deciduous, coniferous

(1/3)

Narshada,

Badger (2/3)

The worms that will devour you
We suck from the bosom of earth
In the tunnels we build under your feet
We slurp and chew the slimy treats

Twix’t February and month of May
With our chosen mate we lay
A year hence, two to three are bore
Hairless and blind the cubs are formed

Narshada,

Ranging far on island green
Six defend our territory
One in five meet death by wheels
Otherwise we’re rarely seen

Hail to the darkness, hail the night
Hail to the dying of the light
Nocturnal hunters, Meles Meles
Taxon order: Carnivora!

It’s ok if some days you just can’t do the thing, even if you love doing the thing.

#WordWeavers Nov. Day 04

Do films or theater play a role in your story?

Yes! Several of my side characters form a travelling troupe of entertainers, and theatre is part of what they do.

And we’re in the new house. Here’s a view of the still-wild back garden. It will not stay wild however—we’re hoping to be able to cultivate a moss lawn.

Better pic tomorrow, although I think this shot has its merits.
