I got nothing against atheism but geez some of y'all are stuck in 2008

MisuseCase,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@MnemosyneSinger As a person from a minority religion I gotta tell ya, I side-eye a lot of atheists and I often mute or block them on here. They’re almost as bad as the Bible thumpers and I know they aren’t going to help if the fascists start rounding us up again.

Star Trek historically portrays fully automated gay space communism only to up to the extent that it's quite gently pushing the mainstream boundaries on the various issues involved.

A with-their-whole-chest portrayal of such a society would actively provoke the kind of culture war regressive nerds pretend Trek is provoking from time to time.

Also, I would like this.

MisuseCase,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@LeviKornelsen If you are really into that read the Culture novels which portray an unapologetically fully automated luxury gay space communism society.

MisuseCase,

@LeviKornelsen Could you imagine how Those People would react to that canonical thing about Culture folks all doing at least one gender transition during their lives

    @victor Also the human at the other end is probably a low-paid contractor in Kenya and with the time pressure they are under they are not in a good position to understand the nuances of some weird meme stuff Americans are talking about.

    I am not kidding about the Kenya thing - Meta, Twitter, OpenAI, etc. basically all use the same contracting company in Nairobi.

    @grmpyprogrammer@phpc.social avatar

    Yep, Meta can absolutely slurp up anything publicly posted anywhere. Threads already has more users in 48 hours than the entire Fediverse has. I know it sucks that 99% of users don’t give a shit about having their data collected. Reality often sucks that way. https://mastodon.africa/@wogan/110672618108077159

    MisuseCase,
    @MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

    @grmpyprogrammer Users do give a shit about having their data collected and when presented with meaningful, easy-to-understand and easily accessed options for limiting permissions and personal data collection, they will use them. We see this in the way that iOS presents permissions and clearly explains app data usage to users. Most users will say “no, I don’t want that.”

    It’s why Meta and most other social media platforms obscure that information and make it hard to opt out.

    MisuseCase, to Stellaris
    @MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

    Playing #stellaris as an isolationist empire doing Inward Perfection, I somehow managed to become Galactic Custodian and leader of the League of Non-Aligned Powers in the War in Heaven anyway. This was all possible because I got the OP diplomatic Paragon leader towards the late mid game.

    (You either know what this is or you don’t.)

    MisuseCase,
    @MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

    @atompunkray It’s when two ancient Fallen Empires have a fight and they drag the rest of the galaxy into it.

    I don’t know if you’ve seen BABYLON 5 where the Shadows and the Vorlons, who are elder races, get into a big war. It’s basically that.

    MisuseCase,
    @MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

    @maxmm77 There are a lot of conditions that have to be met to trigger a War in Heaven. You have to have more than one Fallen Empire, one of them has to awaken, and another one has to awaken in response. The odds of an actual War in Heaven happening are higher if they have opposing Ethics (e.g., one is Xenophile and the other is Xenophobe, which happened in my playthrough).

    The overall odds of a War in Heaven occurring are kind of low, through, even with multiple Fallen Empires in the galaxy.

    MisuseCase,
    @MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

    @trochee @maxmm77 @deuceofgears It’s a BABYLON 5 plot. The whole 4th season is basically that. Since #stellaris is a grand strategy space opera trope blender that is very up-front about its influences it’s not even subtle. If you take the option to form the League of Non-Aligned Powers and take on both Fallen Empires, the flavor text on the confirmation button is a direct quote from BABYLON 5.

    “Why do the creators of ChatGPT call their chatbot an AI instead of a proper term like large language model? For the same reason that Disney World calls their employees "cast members," corporations use the term "right-sized" when they lay people off, and workers are given a "friendly reminder" right before a manager fires you. In short, all these are examples of corporate doublespeak, where language is used as "an agent of power and control.”” https://www.patreon.com/posts/genre-grapevine-85417093

    MisuseCase,
    @MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

    @lilithsaintcrow That’s right, calling it “AI” is a marketing term and makes people think that thing is a lot more than it is.

    MisuseCase,
    @MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

    @wakame @lilithsaintcrow Mm-hmm. People (mostly on Reddit) told me I was stupid for saying that what we are calling AI will need a lot of supervision as well as care and feeding from humans for a long time yet. They don’t understand it’s not magic.

    One of the things the #kdrama START-UP does well and, I am sure, very intentionally, is demonstrating how capitalism disincentivizes developing technology solutions that actually help people with survival needs, because doing that doesn’t really generate revenue/profit.

    Like, the team in the titular start-up business comes up with brilliant solutions for assistive technology but it’s not something they can turn into a viable business model. #kdramas 1/2

    MisuseCase,
    @MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

    It’s not because they’re stupid or anything it’s because there isn’t a way to make a profit off a service that is directly offered to, and that directly supports, the population their solution serves. They basically have to use some shenanigans to get a large corporation to fund it from their charity budget. #kdrama #kdramas 2/2

    At the close of the here are some stats on poverty in America (pre-COVID):

    There are 140 million poor and low and income people in the U.S. That’s 43% of people who are living paycheck to paycheck, one mishap away from ruin.

    52% of American children belong to poor or low-income families.

    And poverty is the 4th leading cause of death in the U.S. 1/3

    MisuseCase,
    @MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

    This means poverty as a cause of death is behind heart disease, cancer, and smoking, but ahead of a lot of other causes that get much more media attention - such as homicide, gun violence, overdoses, and diabetes.

    MisuseCase,
    @MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

    We live in a country where poverty is frequently a death sentence

    But we choose to let nearly half our population and more than half of our children live in, or near to, poverty - in unstable housing situations, without adequate nutrition, healthcare, or even sometimes basic sanitation.

    @wordshaper I think some people need to get it into their heads that folks are using e-bikes as practical transportation/alternatives to cars and not for sport or whatever.
