Socially awkward goth lady that programs in Crystal and Common Lisp, makes Doom maps, and writes music. I also love Touhou Project, Lovecraft, and Godzilla. #slackware Linux user since 2002. She/her.

My #vgm player Benben now supports songs that use the PWM chip in the 32x :D

So did you hear that the Energizer Bunny was arrested?

It was on a charge of battery.

I think I've managed to speed up the NES chip emulation (which is based in NSF Play) in Benben. Not dramatically, but definitely a noticeable amount.

I think the big two things slowing it down are cache misses, and array accesses being bounds checked by default in Crystal. So I think I have some wiggle room to still squeeze out a bit more performance yet.

@jhx Man, I haven't heard mind.in.a.box in ages...

I love the PC Engine so much 🖤

MistressRemilia,

@Ten I always read about it in magazines, but I never had one until I was an adult. It's since become one of my favorites as well, right up there with the Genesis and NeoGeo.

So. Many. Good. Shmups. 🤤

@MistressRemilia hi mistress remilia I recently downloaded crystal Do you recomend a beginner programmer learn crystal I am currently learning python.

MistressRemilia,

@jay84 definitely! The syntax is very close to Ruby (but not exact), and it's quite easy to pick up. Crystal is also just a really solid language.

MistressRemilia,

@jay84 Honestly, the official guide is excellent at teaching you Crystal. It and the Language Reference are one of the reasons I like the language so much. You can run the examples in the browser, and there's also a full playground online.

MistressRemilia,

@jay84 I've been programming since the late 90s, and I started using crystal in 2019 I think? Somewhere around there.

It's used for a lot of server side web stuff, but I'm not a web developer by any means. My big projects in it are Benben and YunoSynth (a VGM player and library, respectively), and midi123 and Haematite (same thing, but for MIDI files and SoundFonts).

Probably easier just to link to my site lol https://remilia.sdf.org/

MistressRemilia,

@jay84 Right? It really has stood the test of time. Are you into Doom?

As a side note to this, qemu kicks ass. I would definitely recommend using it over something like VirtualBox.

MistressRemilia,

@anthonyg can confirm, qemu is badass

Small update to my Heretic mapset ^_^

EDIT: forgot to mention that I'm doing these levels entirely with the Eureka editor.

MistressRemilia,

@hobbsc me too! I love it's interface, and how much lighter weight it is. UDB is nice, but I've never been one to use the vast majority of its features, like the curve, stair, and 3d floor tools. But I also grew up using DEU as a kid, so that probably helped.

Where are your Doom maps?

The other day I had the ABCs song stuck in my head for the entire day. Today I have the "If you're happy and you know it" song stuck in my head.

Somebody please drive a screwdriver through my skull.

I feel a gemlog post about Boomer Shooters and my relationship with them brewing, probably because I've been playing some lately.

Mapping in Doomsday is fun, I have to do more with less.

The texture offset error was already taken care of, btw :-P

Not too surprised tbh lol. Not included: the vast number of games I played outside of Steam.

I'm doing a survey because I love retro games.

What is your own personal definition of a retro game?

Does the seventh generation of consoles count? (Wii / PS3 / Xbox 360)

What is the cut off?

Please boost for visibility.

Thank you 😊

MistressRemilia,

@Ten 16-bit era and earlier for me. Old, but gold :')

But it's probably relative to when the person grew up, and what they grew up with. I had a Genesis and 7800, and I played a lot of arcade games.

MistressRemilia,

@Ten actually, because I had the Genesis (and later a Saturn and Dreamcast), I have very little nostalgia for the NES, and practically none for the SNES. It's weird XD

MistressRemilia,

@yakkoj @Ten I had the OG GameBoy and the the GBA, but that's all I had of Nintendo until I got the GameCube in Christmas of 2004. I got an NES and SNES the following year but rarely played them. I did play the heck out of the Metroid Prime games, though. And the Resident Evil remake.
