Got around to watching #RebelMoon and I knew I shouldn’t have bothered. It’s a po-faced remake of Battle Beyond the Stars (which in turn was a remake of Magnificent 7 and Seven Samurai), but with Snyder’s lens flare, oiled pecs, wooden dialogue and slowmo fight scenes.

Music transferred to iPhone from cd (way back when) isn’t transferring over onto my iTunes.
I’d like to put a new cd onto my iPhone via iTunes but am concerned that if I synced with the library, I’ll lose all my older cd music (as not on the computer/itunes).
How much do I miss just being able to drag and drop music onto my phone!!!
@drneevil ITunes copies in one direction only. From computer onto iPhone/iPad/iPod. Do you mean the only copy you have of some of your music is on the phone? That’s not how you’re supposed to do it - the master copy is your iTunes library on your computer (unless you use iTunes Match which lets you store it all in the cloud, and also upgrades all your crappy old MP3 to AAC).
Try using iMazing to extract the music files. Then keep it all in iTunes on your computer.

I see the use case for this, but the ability to remotely power up a switched off iPhone, flash some firmware and then switch it off again, all with no physical access, seems… uh, risky? I bet the Cellebrite people are keen to see how this works.
@staringatclouds Of all the phone manufacturers, they’re the one that takes security the most seriously. I’d definitely like to read some actual documentation about this.
@koteisaev The power management hardware is always on, so that the soft power button will work, and some of the wireless hardware is also kept on so that Find My works even if the phone is off.
@myrmidon That’s kind of what happens now. During setup of a new iPhone it will prompt you to download any updates. Better than the old way (I remember having to go through a tedious temp setup, update, factory reset sequence in the past), but still slow. And if people opt out they can get caught by bugs such as the one fixed recently by 17.0.2
@sidb@lisamelton Restricting this to unactivated/not iCloud locked phones would make sense. But it still potentially allows bad actors to mess with a phone without breaking any factory seals (eg intercepting during delivery).
@gerowen That’s the risk. If Apple have slipped up with the security of this, it potentially allows bad actors to mess with phones inside locked containers.
@gunstick This seems worse, especially just having something connected to the only port whilst being shipped. But having external electrical connections increases the attack surface.
@myrmidon Trivial using NFC. I have some NFC tags I play with and there’s a standard set of records for passing SSID, encryption scheme and password data. Just needs another one to trigger the update behaviour and a URL to fetch the payload from (assuming that’s not hardcoded as just the standard iOS update location).
