The fixation at #GoogleIO last week on AI buried the much more interesting talk by @Una on The Latest in Web UI, which highlighted the ton of interesting features arriving in #HTML and #CSS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-6LgEjEyzE

I wish the other browser vendors didn't rely so heavily on Google to get the word out. They all do so much work to make these features possible, as do the standards committees, the #OpenUI group, and @igalia, and they all deserve to get more credit.

It’s always felt a little strange to me that when I search for an icon for "filter” I get a bunch of funnels.

Today, @marcel put that strange feeling into words for me: a funnel is designed to move liquid from one place to another and, if used correctly, nothing should be lost.

Which is the opposite of “filtering” which purposefully removes stuff.

Anyway, you can continue about your day.

@jimniels @marcel And a 🔍 is not what people actually use to search for things

Internet archives are amazing and under-appreciated.

I searched a archive for a program I'd written decades ago in high school: an interpreter for the Karel programming language for use in intro CS classes. Because wonderful people have maintained those archives for many years, I was able to find my program 40 years after I wrote it. https://www.usenetarchives.com/view.php?id=net.sources&mid=PDI5OUBzcG9jay5VVUNQPg

It's hard to describe what it's like to see that #C code again now. (Although I'm frankly appalled that teenage me didn't put curly braces around one-line if clauses and for loops.)

I downloaded the source and was delighted that the ancient shell script to extract the code still runs just fine in bash. (It would take much more time to actually get the program itself to work again.) I posted the source on GitHub: https://github.com/JanMiksovsky/karel.

40 years from now, which is more likely to still exist: the USENET archive version, or the GitHub version? 🤔 I'm betting the former.

Per my policy of always giving a shout-out to new tech I find that I like: Pagefind is an awesome tool for adding search to static sites: https://pagefind.app

and creators should take a look.

Thanks to @bglw for the awesome work! 👏

What's the easiest way to host a big tree of large images in the cloud and end up with predictable HTTPS URLs?

I've looked at Git LFS, storage providers like Google Drive and OneDrive, and a variety of popular CMSes. These solutions seem to want to assign files opaque IDs; obtaining a URL from an ID requires an API call. CMSes also seem to require that files be manually uploaded through the browser or by writing a custom upload script, both of which would be a hassle.

@whynothugo I could… but I'd much prefer to outsource maintenance if I can. I've had a collection of little servers that are each, on their own, trivial — but they all do need tiny bits of maintenance now and then, and the cumulative cost (and timing) of such problems eventually becomes distracting. I'm hoping to find something more turn-key, rather than adding to that collection of self-managed servers.

@abitwise @tanepiper @ferrata Thanks for the S3 rec!

"It might not be immediately clear if you read the docs…" As someone who only rarely uses AWS, my experience with every part of it is that nothing is ever immediately clear from the docs. 🤣

That said, it does appear that there are ample cases of people describing their use of S3 this way that I can probably follow along.
