Your GovTracker is going to put back on her government publications librarian hat to rant about sloppy language in reporting. There are several specific categories of Presidential Documents(https://www.federalregister.gov/presidential-documents). The main ones are Executive Orders and Proclamations, but they are not the same. What Biden issued today was a proclamation (still only on the White House site: https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2024/06/04/a-proclamation-on-securing-the-border/). The meat is in a DHS regulation: https://www.federalregister.gov/public-inspection/2024-12435/securing-the-border which is a whole other thing!

GovTrack,
@GovTrack@mastodon.social avatar

It matters because if you’re trying to find the text of the Biden border materials for today and search for Executive Orders, you’re not going to find it. But that’s how everyone talked about it. And, since most of the articles today were written pre-publication, there were no links to help the average person see what was happening. We’ve found the American Immigration Council’s X account helpful, along with this fact sheet about limiting entry: https://www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/research/understanding-ina-section-212f-president-authority-suspend-entry-migrants / rant over

Things I’ve learned from @GovTrack #1:

The U.S. Senate mostly just renames post offices. 🇺🇸

GovTrack,
@GovTrack@mastodon.social avatar

@skoobasteeve Not quite true. Both chambers do this. It’s constituent service; they’re usually totally uncontroversial and don’t take much floor time. Not renaming them wouldn’t solve the other logjams, so the logic is “why not”? What the Senate actually spends most of its time on is nominated positions and as many judicial ones as they can.

GovTrack,
@GovTrack@mastodon.social avatar

@skoobasteeve Oh yeah, the uncontroversial part is a huge factor! But it’s been a source of irritation for both our users and even some Congressional leaders over the years. John Boehner, ~2012, tried to put limits on the renamings and other commemorative resolutions. Didn’t take tho :)

Lawmakers expensed millions under new program that doesn’t require receipts - The Washington Post | Everyone grouses when Congress gives itself raises and baroque arrangements like this, ripe for abuse, are what they pass instead. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/06/04/house-representatives-expenses-receipts-lodging/

GovTrack,
@GovTrack@mastodon.social avatar

@gooba42 I don’t think anyone would argue that Congressional pay won’t alter whether someone is willing to take a bribe, but never giving themselves raises just means that over time ever fewer non-wealthy citizens can run for and be in Congress. The body is already disproportionately full of extremely wealthy people; why not try to make it viable for more representative Representatives?

GovTrack,
@GovTrack@mastodon.social avatar

@gooba42 The majority of the country doesn’t have to maintain two residences in order to do the job though. Public financing of campaigns would have no effect on this.

GovTrack,
@GovTrack@mastodon.social avatar

@gooba42 You, along with every other US citizen, have the right to advocate with your representatives on issues important to you. If you want to spend your time pushing Congress to punish itself, have at it. But you might have more success, and certainly a greater impact if successful, by advocating with your representatives for improving the lives of everyone else in the US.

This is why we noted that the actual document on the border hadn’t come out yet: per Dara Lind on X, “(The meat of Biden's border announcement isn't anything that's come out yet; it's the "interim final rule" that the White House says will be published today, but isn't yet on the Federal Register site. Most likely that will happen in the 4p hour? But who knows really?)”

If it’s an “interim final rule”, then it wouldn’t be an Executive Order afaik. So, indeed, the AP article may well be wrongish

Normally, we don’t talk much about actions by the other branches of the federal government. However, the Executive Order that Biden is supposed to be releasing today that cuts back on asylum seekers is the subject of much discussion by members of Congress: https://apnews.com/article/biden-asylum-migration-immigration-mexico-border-dec5f83b468b5795479bf1f5e49799d5 We have no reason to think the AP is mis-describing the EO, but the Administration hasn’t made any versions public so it might differ from the article. It should be listed here when released: https://www.federalregister.gov/presidential-documents/executive-orders/joe-biden/2024
