Fosstonaut,

@martijnbraam If I can get systemd I will choose it, OpenRC works fine and I am somewhat used to it by now but I am still more familiar with systemd and it always worked great for me! We can argue if a project should be build dependent on systemd but maintaining them for other systems if that's not the goal of the project itself is just a waste of resources or at least looks like it from my uninformed and uninvolved point of view.

Fosstonaut,

@joel Is it worth it?

#Hexchat has ceased development :'c

Fosstonaut,

@joel Well, the writing has been on the wall for a long time regarding IRC, let's hope Matrix manages to take that spot eventually, I am definitely not happy about the heavy reliance of many projects on Discord!

A small 2-days delay, but here's Trafotin vid about SwitchedToLinux! This concludes the, uh, "pointing out that some linux creators really shouldn't be interacted with" series
https://youtu.be/ufxPo9_RqJY

Fosstonaut,

@niccolove I know I am a little late but I watch your Lunduke video right now and that seems like a perfect follow up, unlike Lunduke I never actively followed SwitchedToLinux but I watched some of his videos and ran into (at least to me) worrisome views. Great job with the Lunduke video, it's immensely important for the entire community that someone shines a light on certain creators!

Finally a native #Wallet application for Linux mobile 🎉 . #fWallet got just merged into #Alpine testing, looking forwards to for feedback from #pmos users !

Fosstonaut,

@linmob @martijnbraam @braid My issue was the lack of a description for PkPass, I looked it up now but the whole thing was new to me.

Most of the time when you use Mastodon, do you use:

Fosstonaut,

@mike I stopped using the Web UI in favor of Tuba (Gnome client) quite a few months ago and on mobile I always used Tusky, that's just the best social media app ever!

Today a Patreon supported stopped their membership because they felt I was pushing the LGBT+ agenda too much. Since I surely won't stop doing that, anybody feels like taking their place? ;-)

Fosstonaut,

@niccolove Humans suck, at least there are corners of the internet with nicer people!

Fosstonaut, to linuxphones

I forgot to post it but for those of you who (like me) desperately wait for push notifications on your there is a issue for now, it's just to collect ideas and they don't plan to actually implement anything till suspend is figured out (that currently only works for calls and SMS) but it's a start! Big thanks to @agx for the nice conversation we had in their Matrix room! :)
https://gitlab.gnome.org/guidog/meta-phosh/-/issues/3

Fosstonaut,

@agx Btw, it's totally understandable that you don't want to invest resources in it yet but I still wish you would reconsider that approach! It's a big difference to receive notifications every time you look at your phone or only if you open the corresponding app and that also gives the individual app developers a lot of time to implement it properly!

I think I finally figured out a decent dark theme for apps in using and it's dark Gnome theme but Tokodon doesn't seem to like it at all so I will have to use a PWA for Mastodon again. It's really nice to finally have a somewhat decent dark theme even tho I would prefer the dark version of Breeze, maybe KDE will make that possible at some point I guess!

Fosstonaut,

@linmob That would be awesone, what I can't understand is why the default dark theme isn't available anywhere except KDE but I guess it is what it is. My current solution is increadably buggy, I use the environment variables to force Breeze-dark as my icon theme and Kvantum as QT and QTQuick theme but some apps like Tokodon don't respect theming so for those most icons are missing and all QTQuick elements remain white. controvercial take, theming QT apps is horrible unless you use KDE!

Fosstonaut,

@linmob I really want that dark mode for Alligagor and Angelfish tho, I just wish Tuba was usable! Well, maybe GTK4 scrolling will improve at some point but looking at GTK3's performance hickups compared to GTK2 I wouldn't be surprised jf they just ignore it for years.

Fosstonaut,

@linmob Mine still has those icons but since I use the environment variables almost all others are gone and it ignores my theming, without theming it at least has it's icons but I want to theme stuff to get it darker. About Tuba, it's certainly FAR too bad to scroll through a social media feed but it's usable to post something if you have a lot of patience so not totally unusable.

Go check out the video from @niccolove on the EU's new legislation that would force all messaging platforms (even with end-to-end encryption) to scan messages for child porn content, and how it's going to affect privacy.

https://tube.kockatoo.org/w/3am9KWMppxgewAJTSeQkau

#EU #EUparlament #EuropeanParlament #ChatControl #PrivacyMatters

Fosstonaut,

@peotr26 @niccolove Uhm, Chat control failed a few days ago because the member states couldn't agree and decided to get rid of the encryption breaking part, well and it's not especially new ether or is there a new attempt for it already? If I am not wrong the remaining thread to encryption is another law that targets HTTPs but not chat control anymore or am I missing something?

Fosstonaut,

@niccolove @peotr26 Oh, okay! I was a bit worried, the last one wasn't the first attempt for something like chat control ether if I am not wrong and I wouldn't be surprised if they try it again!

After reaching 22.000 subscribers on YouTube, enough to beat the infamous babyWOGUE, my next personal goal is to interview @echo_pbreyer on it. Maybe for the next European elections!

Fosstonaut,

@niccolove @echo_pbreyer It sadly never took of in Austria even a tiny bit but the pirate party is my favorite in European politics!

Why are Windows users so stupid, why do I get people in my comments telling me how great Windows 7 still is in 2023. There is literally no rational argument to be running Windows 7, feel free to make one, but hot take, I will never encourage people to run an EOL operating system

Fosstonaut,

@BrodieOnLinux I even stopped to use it in my VMs because the software support is shit by now but if I had to guess the only "usecase" would be if you are a die-hard Windows fan (I doubt those actually exist) and your computer can't run Windows 10. That still makes you a fucking idiot but it at least makes some sense beyond nostalgia I guess.

The world is massive and I'm by no means the only content creator, so let me know who some of your favourites are, big or small, or maybe even not on the platform anymore

Fosstonaut,

@BrodieOnLinux In terms of videos I only really follow you and Nicco, I used to also follow Distrotube and Christitus a year or two ago but well, I probably don't have to explain that.

I really hope service providers encrypt passwords professionally because mine is sexually explicit and if it ever leaked I'd be more worried about being judged for it than hackers stealing my data

Fosstonaut,

@niccolove On one hand this makes me kind of curious but on the other I am really not sure if I even want to know!

Fosstonaut,

@niccolove Well, as long as it's consensual with whoever you wanna do it with it's none of my business and I am not going to judge but I will just believe you on that one!

One of the things that make #Mastodon so satisfying in my opinion is the (chronological) determinism of the timeline. If I re-open the timeline after a while, I can be sure to find some post I saw back in its place, instead of the bunch of randomly selected recommendations that other social media picks nowadays.

It's more like a log of actual social human interactions than any other platform, not to mention its content quality being way higher without "viral" recommendations

Fosstonaut,

@tuxdevices It's the bubble you control yourself and that's the only bubble I will ever accept! :)

Me: adds an LGBT flag in some videos
Comments: don't bring politics into open source! It's wrong! We don't want politics!

Me: makes multiple videos about European legislation, EU Parliament, how to be politically active
Comments: lovely, please make more videos like this!

Fosstonaut,

@niccolove Political is what people decide it to be and people who call one of those flags "political" usually just want the existence of those people to be a topic of debate but to every sane person it definitely isn't!

A German court has just declared a "Do Not Track" #DNT signal from your browser as legally binding, pursuant to Article 21(5) #GDPR. https://www.vzbv.de/urteile/gericht-untersagt-datenschutzverstoesse-von-linkedin

Fosstonaut,

@bendrath Wait a second, that actually happened?! It's something every even remotely privacy expert, enthusiast and whatever else in europe tolled every fucking single person complaining about cookie banners should have been in the GDPR from the start, let's hope we can get approval from a European court soon too!
