Idle thoughts of a morning:

Growing up in Britain when I did there were almost always black and white films on telly in the afternoon and a surprising number of old adventure serials at different times, mainly Saturdays. As a result I was routinely exposed to entertainment from thirty or forty years earlier.

Pop culture elements persist differently today. I don't get the impression that black and white anything gets much airtime (the occasional deliberate artistic choice on a new release aside), discounted in a similar way to silent movies when sound came along. On the other hand, there are far more outlets for entertainment and we have things like Star Trek still being mined after nearly sixty years.

I'd be fascinated to compare how young people perceive old shows and movies today—and indeed what they consider old—with back in the seventies and eighties. Can't think how it could possibly be done, of course, since I tend to be surprised that anything after 1999 isn't really quite recent (and that there are people born since then who are adults, rather than primary school children). I suppose every generation encounters that difference between X number of years ago being "before I was born and therefore ancient" and X number of years ago being "a year or two… How long? You're kidding…"

Idle thoughts.

@SJohnRoss @BigJackBrass I noticed recently that my year of birth is twice as far from now as it was from the end of WWII! (53 years v 25 years.) In the context of your veterans comment, veterans of the Gulf War (1990-91) are not far off the same age as those you saw in the ‘80s!

My last memory lane posts seem to have resonated well so here’s another. is up there as one of the games that I’m not very keen on. This comes from a couple of games (both at conventions with well respected Keepers) where the aim has been to scare the player rather than the characters. This put me off for quite a while but after a good game with someone who was running Cthulhu as their first ever GMing attempt I’m tempted to go back to it.

@Tim_Eagon I’m quite lucky. My copy is still pretty good. Where the colour plates are it’s a little delicate though.

@RogerBW What would you go with instead?

FortiterGames,
@FortiterGames@dice.camp avatar

@RogerBW I’ve played (and own) Nights Black Agents so I can see how Trail would work well. I’m at #7HillsRPGConvention this weekend so might take a look at Cthulhu Hack as Paul is here too. My own favourite generic system is Savage Worlds but I’m not sure that would work here.

FortiterGames,
@FortiterGames@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon @RogerBW I take it that’s not the same Liminal that @TheTweedmeister wrote?

FortiterGames,
@FortiterGames@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon That’s got me interested with the references to John Carpenter 😉

FortiterGames,
@FortiterGames@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon I’ve heard of them but not actually played them to be honest.

FortiterGames,
@FortiterGames@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon Based on your recommend I’ve just bought the Liminal Horror bundle that’s currently on itch.io 😉

Will have a read after this weekend’s convention.

FortiterGames,

@Tim_Eagon @carpedavid That one might have to wait until after the convention 😉

Uh-oh… Noble Knight is offering free international shipping (if you spend something like $300 on products). Thank goodness I'm no longer in the market for OOP and collectible games.

@BigJackBrass Group together with a few people and that becomes a pretty reasonable deal 😉

Hey , looking to cook more at home in the new year. Hit me with your best, easy to make and fast recipes. Needs to appeal to a picky 12-year old and ideally to an even pickier 5-year old. Can’t use seafood, as my wife hates it.

@Tim_Eagon I love the Hairy Bikers’ enchiladas: https://www.hairybikers.com/recipes/view/enchiladas

I’m pescatarian so swap out the beef mince for Quorn mince and also add in microwave Mexican-style rice to make it more like a burrito. If you do that it’s about 15 minutes in the pan and then 15-20 minutes in the oven.

Going off tangent: British money still is weird

Ulster Bank 50 pounds note Sometimes Britain is really weird. I was writing a post about money in Dungeons and Dragons when I remembered something odd we encountered when visiting Northern Ireland back in the 2000s: Northern Irish Bank notes. No, not just British paper money, actual bank notes issued by private banks in the constituent part of the United Kingdom that is Northern Ireland.

FortiterGames,
@FortiterGames@dice.camp avatar

@kyonshi Not entirely true. Scottish notes are generally accepted throughout England and Wales. You are right though in that three Scottish banks can (or could, it’s been a while since I checked) issue currency (the Bank of Scotland, the Royal Bank of Scotland, and the Clydesdale Bank) but only one bank in England (the Bank of England) can.

Background: I’m from Scotland, living in England and have never had any real problems using Scottish notes in the last 33 years.

Just over 6 months until my old #espionage #RPG website https://www.modus-operandi.co.uk hits 25 years since I started it. I had planned to update it for its 20th anniversary but mental health issues sidelined that. I think my next project will be to complete that update.

I’ve been looking back, thanks to the internet archive, at previous designs and there were some good ones there. Time to go back to hand coding maybe? 😉

Are there many other RPG websites out there still around from the ‘90s?
