Well researched and excellent post from @pandorablake on the positive effects of porn! We're hoping that their words will help SWs in the UK get more support and agency instead of harmful moralizing.

One of the most perverse problems we see on the fediverse is people being shitty in our mentions about us and our work.

One of the things that keeps us on Twitter is, actually, that they do a better job of moderating that than a good chunk of the large instances here.

Over the weekend, myself (@amy) and @thelusciouslibra attended Exxxotica and were deeply unimpressed and neither of us will return unless a number of systemic issues are resolved.

There's travel and other activities to complete before we can do a full writeup, but at a high level our recommendation is to avoid the event.

Something that we think is important to keep reinerating in the NSFW creator community (enjoyers/fans should pay attention too, please!), especially with the recent payout outages on Fansly, Onlyfans and Wishtender...

We all love the fun and liberating parts of this... but need to keep in mind the odds stacked against us that hamper and endanger that fun and freedom!

What we do is SEX WORK, it's a highly marginalized field and it's getting WORSE day by day through...

  • all sorts of harmful legislation that's deceptively disguised as smth to "protect our children and security", resulting from instrumentalized lawsuits
  • the actions major financial institutions and "religious activist" groups choose to take based on their repressive, fascist agenda, serving to maintain the predatory capitalist status quo (and their fraudulently acquired wealth)

This is not in any way a complete list but it gives a brief overview of COMPREHENSIVE PROOF of deliberate actions against our work and generally, FREEDOM of expression:

• Wishtender wishlist service shutting down payouts
• Fansly and Onlyfans facing payout outages and delays because of their payment processors' banking issues
• Twitch briefly allowing some NSFW content with content warnings/labels, then swiftly banning it all again (literally the NEXT DAY)
• Tumblr removing all NSFW content
• NSFW/SW group Switter on Mastodon being forced to shut down
• very pro-SW crypto payment platform Spankpay being forced to shut down because a payment processor dropped them (!!)
• ID requirement to access porn sites in several US states
• OF banning all NSFW content briefly (in 2021) ...this is why Fansly was originally founded!
• Throne wishlist service warning its users to NOT list sex toys and NSFW social media if you want payouts to work
• Instagram and Tiktok STRICTLY not allowing NSFW content, even if it's very mild
• Paypal freezing and seizing all funds of SW/NSFW content creators
• many payment platforms/digital wallets STRICTLY forbid funds originating from sex work/NSFW content
• major US banks shutting down SWers and porn performers' accounts, seizing funds. That even happened to incorporated porn production BUSINESS OWNERS

There's even more to this that's directly connected to the larger issue of money interests' manipulation of our society but that's a topic for a whole 'nother post...

People doing adult content things! This spreadsheet details all the various restrictions on adult content on many sites. Reviewing this can save you headaches in the future.

If you use it definitely think about kicking some money towards Sophie Ladder who created it!

Note: this spreadsheet only contains sites focused on adult content, not others like patreon.

A couple noteworthy things that have happened recently:

  1. as mentioned before, linktree has decided that adult links are bad. It seems like beacons.ai is a good replacement right now
  2. Payment processors fucked us all over once again, this time with gumroad.

The second one is something I've (@amy) been thinking about lately. This squeeze is going to continue happening. Sites like manyvids and fansly will be amongst the last to fall, but probably will anyway if people continue to accept these outcomes. In recent weeks I've seen a few creators begin offering cryptocurrency payment options as a hedge against this growing problem.

I'm fully in support of this trend. While I broadly find crypto to be deeply odious for reasons many of you likely already know, I see value in its utility in helping marginalized people and professions get paid. The people who want to see sex workers chased out of existence deserve to have their job made as hard for them as possible and crypto offers such an avenue.

We applaud the European Commissioner for Human Rights on this piece on sex workers.

In 2023, the UN Working Group found that “there is now sufficient evidence on the harms of any forms of criminalisation of sex work, including criminalisation of clients and ‘third parties’ related activities”.

While it could be more critical of Nordic models, the overall message is completely correct: decriminalization protects sex workers, and sex work is not human trafficking.

Since a lot of us sex workers have to deal with this on an (almost) daily basis... quick PSA:

Do NOT! ...ever, EVER, NEVER ask a sex worker for free favors or tell them what kind of content they should be putting out and posting for free, especially in a demanding way!

Respectfully... this is what paid custom requests are for.

Ask yourself... would you demand an artist to paint something fully fitted to your tastes and release it for free?

If you cannot afford custom requests, a lot of us might be happy to take suggestions from a friendly and respectful subscriber!

There are polite ways of communicating your ideas and wishes to us, at least build rapport first and stay mindful of sex work being our work!💜

Thankyouverymuch!✊

Why does this page boost ads and promotion from sex workers in addition to the longer-form content? Because we don't believe that knowledge about sex workers can be divorced from the people actually doing the work.

Arguably we could have created separate pages for boosting SWs and the educational content we put out, and commonly held wisdom about creating any kind of publication is that we should have done that, but we want people to follow us to see the Whole picture, not just one aspect.

A heads-up to all sex workers (and, actually, all small business owners...) promoting on Instagram:

due to a new update, your link in bio could redirect to Instagram's SPAM warning instead and make you lose business!

This is random and doesn't affect all accounts yet but be sure to check!

Based on reports, switching to Linktree, Beacons or Allmylinks won't fix this!

FediSluts,
@FediSluts@spookygirl.boo avatar

@Jennydreamog no news yet on that, we'll try to post updates as we have them.

A less than totally helpful solution is to buy a domain and host your links yourself rather than relying on things like beacons.ai. But that's a more difficult approach for sure.

I don't know who needs to hear this but sex work doesn't kill.

FediSluts, to random

Some sex workers are curious about the news of the bluesky bridge Ryan Barrett made. We've heard you asking about what a bridge is, what it means for your posts here (or there), and what you can do if you don't want whatever it is.

Since this is developing news on something that isn't fully live yet, before anything else: Ryan claims to be listening to feedback around the nature of the bridge. Specifically around the initial plan to make it opt-out vs opt-in. So, more pitchforks are not currently necessary, but may very well be needed again. We'll make an effort to post again as more news comes out.

So without further blah blah blah:

What is a bridge?

A bridge is software that joins two different kinds of software together to allow them to work together, when they weren't designed to do this directly. (Nerds, don't nitpick this definition, this post isn't for you.) The metaphor of a bridge is meant to evoke the idea of a literal bridge spanning a river or similar. However, generally when talking about software bridges there's some asterisks on that when the features in the two pieces of software (e.g. mastodon, bluesky) don't line up all the way, which is often the case. We'll give a clear example of this below.

For now, think of bridges as somewhere between actual bridges and two solo cups and some string.

What does it mean for my posts?

Once launched it would mean that, subject to some limitations, anyone on bluesky can follow your mastodon (fediverse) account from bluesky. It does not mean that someone has built a huge vacuum that's going to somehow slurp up the entire fediverse and post it on bluesky, or vice versa. It does mean that:

  • if someone on bluesky follows you, then anyone on bluesky can see your fediverse posts
  • bluesky users could reply to your posts on bluesky, and you would see those comments on the fediverse.
  • your posts will get processed by bluesky, including the AI content labeling systems they have built (or that others have plugged into it).
  • some posts you make on mastodon may not show up correctly on bluesky

Here's the solo cups and string example you were promised: bluesky doesn't (currently) support polls, but mastodon does. If you make a post with a poll it will either not get sent to bluesky or just a link to your post on the fediverse will show up in bluesky, or something in between. How exactly it shows up really depends on a number of factors.

What can or should I do about this?

We can't tell you what you should do. We can say these things:

First, if you don't want to allow this you should be able to do a domain block for bsky.brid.gy. If I've read the details correctly, and brid.gy actually respects blocks like it claims. Alternatively, you can ask your admin to block it for you, OR you can come join us on spookygirl.boo where it's already blocked.

Second, spookygirl.boo has preemptively blocked the domain the bluesky bridge will operate on since we decided we didn't want to our content available to bluesky users unless we manually post there ourselves. There are a number of reasons, but they can be summarized as distrust of bluesky on the basis of it's leadership and technical direction.

A brief and incomplete privacy guide for (sex workers) on the fediverse:

  1. Ask your server admin to turn on "authorized fetch".

This helps ensure that your posts can only be seen by who you want. Unfortunately this isn't something you can turn on yourself.
(Psst! It's enabled on spookygirl.boo, a server just for sex workers!)

  1. Get to know the kinds of post visibility you can pick.

The first is "Global", this is roughly the same as Twitter default privacy and is pretty easy to understand. Next is "Unlisted," this one is trickier but it's essentially "my followers and the followers of anyone who boosts the post." Next is "followers only" which is pretty obvious with one caveat: if you don't have follower approvals turned on, this is basically the same as "Global," since anyone can follow you. Last is "Mentioned people only" which is how DMs work here.

  1. Consider using automatic post expiration.

Mastodon allows you to set up your profile so your posts auto-delete after some amount of time that you choose, unless it has some number of favorites or boosts, etc. It can help you out by limited the amount of free pics people can get from your profile and keep those old rant posts from being dug up.

  1. True on twitter, true here too: block early and often.

The dark secret of the fediverse is that it only has theoretically better moderation than corporate platforms, but in practice it's worse right now. There's just as many bad actors here as there are elsewhere, and there's no algorithm that automatically helps deal with them. The upshot is that mass-blocking is easier. You can block entire servers instead of just individuals. The Bad Space can help you decide if a server is worth blocking, though bear in mind that it's still itself in development.

Really important fact about blocking: it's most effective when your server has authorized fetch (see no. 1 above) turned on. Without authorized fetch, posts with global or unlisted visibility can still sometimes be seen by people you blocked! This is why authorized fetch is the very first privacy tip in this list.

Reminder that the idea that porn is inherently objectifying (or somehow intrinsically exploitative of women) is TERF rhetoric. It's also a dog whistle for people who want to score feminist points but who are anything but feminists.

The idea has been around for awhile, but it became most firmly entrenched in the US (the only region @amy is qualified to speak on) during second wave feminism when Christian fundamentalists deliberately infiltrated the feminist movement to set it back and introduce ideas that would make it easier to co-opt. This idea wasn't explicitly introduced by these agents, it was a concept being explored within the movement in general, however it was subsequently abandoned because it doesn't stand up to even very light critique. The Christian agents however saw it's usefulness in advancing their agenda and pushed hard on it.

The efforts of the Christian agents ultimately wound up helping create the radical feminism movement which is a gateway ideology to draw people into being TERFs and fascists.

The more you know 🌈💅

If you'd like to know more about this you can get a good start on the subject by reading Deviations by Gayle Rubin. It broadly covers queer theory, and is quite a dense read, however it's organized as an anthology, so you can just read the essays on this subject. It's worth considering that it is an anthology of specifically Gayle Rubin's work, who is a white woman and is inherently influenced by that intersection of identities.

FediSluts,
@FediSluts@spookygirl.boo avatar

@maggiejk of course this is a nuanced subject. It wouldn't be interesting to talk about if it wasn't! However, fully discussing this subject requires more space than is reasonable for posts on the fediverse, of course, which is why I recommended reading in a separate reply to the top post.

Before anything else, it seems you have a lot of really complex feelings on this subject and that's an okay way to feel about it. But almost everything (except the situation with your friend's daughter?) you've described though is specifically women being abused, a tragedy of course, but it isn't what we're talking about here. We're talking about a specific incorrect and harmful belief system which helps cause and enable abuse within sex work, propagates a narrative that sex work is morally wrong, and/or somehow dirty or dangerous inherently. The sex work industry has problems (including abuse), but abuse specifically, and many of the problems, are not inherent or intrinsic to the field, they instead are a symptom of the larger social context that sex work currently exists within.

So, to expand on what I've said already, though this is still only brushing the surface, a few core tenets of the ideology we're talking about are: 1) that men are inherently exploitative in sex work settings, whether they're consuming or participating in it, and women will always be fighting against exploitation and abuse because of this. 2) that porn (sex work) exists only because of and for the benefit of men and/or capitalism. 3) gender is binary and therefore only men and women engage in these activities. 4) the only extent to which lesbian sex workers factor into this is insofar as some men like watching lesbians so therefore that kind of porn is still exploitative.

Some of this ideology (which is larger than what I've enumerated here) comes directly from the Christian fundamentalists, others are part of larger discussions within 2nd wave feminism which were co-opted by the Christians. However, all of the ideas listed (and more) were found to be incorrect under subsequent analysis and the discussions that determined that helped shape 3rd and 4th wave feminism. It's easy to see what's wrong with at least a couple of the tenets I've listed. Men are not the only consumers of porn, they don't own all of the production companies (how can they exploit women if it's women creating porn for other women?), and gender is definitely not binary. I (@amy) don't even have a gender at all, for example. Number 2 in the list requires a bit more digging to find out why porn and sex work don't exist solely for the benefit of capitalism or men, but that's for another post.

Hey. US-based people! KOSA is bad. It's bad for LGBTQIA+ people, it's bad for sex workers, and it's bad for YOU. Call and write your representatives now!

Under the guise of "protecting the children" (sometimes "think of the children," a right wing dog whistle for at least 100 years here in the US) law markers will be able to pressure platforms to remove content that's considered "harmful" to minors. And, they've already said, on record, that means queer content.

This affects you too, yes even you, cis-het men, because the bill is overly broad and can easily be used to censor anything.
