Here's an interesting tidbit from yesterday's Indiana primary which no one paid attention to (including 80% or registered voters in IN): despite having dropped out of the race a couple of months ago, Nikki Haley got 21.7% of the vote. So one fifth of the most loyal Republican voters in my state can't stomach voting for Trump. Hoping that holds in November.

Renewable energy production in the Netherlands by heat pumps (for heating) and solar panels.
Combining both techniques at large scale causes significant stress to the electricity system.

Still, almost a quarter of all municipal waste in EU27 is disposed in landfills.
This results in significant methane emissions in the decades to come.
EU countries agreed that before 2035, their landfill share would be below 10%.

@BM_Visser I'm from the USA where almost all of our waste goes to landfills. However, many of those landfill sites are now capturing the methane and burning it in small gas turbines or reciprocating engines to generate power. It doesn't amount to much in terms of overall electricity generation, but does at least eliminate the CH4 emissions. Do any landfill sites in Europe capture gases for power generation?

NEW RESEARCH: Heat pumps are more than twice as efficient as fossil fuel heating systems in cold temperatures, our new research shows.

Even at temperatures approaching -30C, heat pumps outperform oil and gas heating systems.

@nuncio @janrosenow Mine has a heat exchanger in the ground which helps a lot in very cold weather. Last winter it got down to -8 F in Indiana and our house stayed at 68 F. Obviously if you start using electricity to run a heat pump your power bill will go up, but compared to the savings in heating oil or natural gas or (in my case) propane, our heat pump provides an overall net savings on our energy bills. Electricity prices are higher in New England, so your results could be different.
