A few thoughts on Vaughan Gethin and yesterday at the Senedd.
This was certainly not a Tory publicity stunt.
He has done something very silly and should have acknowledged that a while ago,
I have only just realised who he received the money from. That is a big stink for him to live with.
The fact 2 Labour members stayed at home says a lot.
The fact that he has not resigned leaves the Welsh Parliament in a real mess.
The curse of the 52% / 48% election strikes again

I may have mentioned this before, but my best friend consumes no news. Zero. Not from TV, radio, internet news sites, newspapers… she doesn’t use social media. The other day she asked who the Prime Minister is right now. I reminded her that this a basic piece of information medics check you can remember to see if you may have a brain injury. I don’t know if I’m appalled by or envious of her stance. It’s a conscious decision, and she says it brings her happiness

DavidjCrook,
@DavidjCrook@mastodon.world avatar

@purplepadma I certainly limit my news input to the minimum to stay informed for the benefit of my mental health. Think it started with the Iraq war.
I do sort of envy her, but would not be able to do it myself.

The water industry in the UK is the perfect case study of the failings of privatisation. It shows just how poor business people are at managing public services. It also shows how poorly the public is served by the Tory greed is good ethos.
Everywhere one looks, the country is in decay after 14 years of under investment.

I hate to tell you we have loads of rhubarb a couple of metres from the back door, and alcohol free cider in the cupboard.
Hopefully supplies get through.

CMHT called just to say that someone else from the CMHT will call tomorrow to arrange an appointment. So bit of a pointless phone call. I really don’t know what to do with myself, I can’t concentrate on anything, not even just listening to an audiobook. Reading and TV are impossible. I can’t take in all the detail on social media. But if I’m not distracted I’m constantly thinking about running away and harming myself.

Hmm, so the couple we went to dinner with were nice enough… they scored points with me for being cool about trans kids… but they don’t seem to like Wales, Welsh people, their nearest town or their immediate neighbours. They said they will probably return to England in 2-3 years.

My take is that they really haven’t put much effort into joining things or making friends locally. They moved into a property in an isolated hamlet, most of which is holiday homes so there’s no proper community. They thought more about the view and the number of bedrooms than whether the closest town would meet their needs.

We have been here longer, but I think we were much more settled and contented after 3 years than they are now. Just a reminder that relocating is about much more than how much house you can get for your money or being able to see green fields from your lounge window.

DavidjCrook,
@DavidjCrook@mastodon.world avatar

@purplepadma @Ceri That is unlikely to win her friends. When my parents lived in Wales they absolutely loved it. At the same time they were conscious of being immigrants. My Dad's advice was that if you are not going to learn Welsh, at least get place names right. Exporting the English superiority complex will get the reaction it deserves.

Freeports seem to be going under the radar in the UK media...

Freeports are intended to be special unregulated investment zones where the normal rules do not apply. The zones cover some large areas.

The idea is based on the old concept of charter cities, another way for big business to profiteer & money launder, potentially forcing workers into indentured labour without rights or regulation. 1/4

The way the social media cards have fallen, I think my natural home is now here on Mastodon - despite its limitations.

Overall I prefer the exchanges on here, which can be considered views rather than instant 'takes'.

Threads is now tending towards toxicity (especially the default "for you" tab which you cannot opt out of); Bluesky has not caught me; and I really only visit X for the Aston Villa tweeters still on there.

DavidjCrook,
@DavidjCrook@mastodon.world avatar

@davidallengreen I only use the artist formerly known as Twitter for sport. I think I am the only Hereford supporter on Mastodon whereas X is still used extensively. I have lots of fascinating contacts on here, but no football interaction. It is an issue, and why I do not leave Musk's Palace.

It’s getting harder and harder to remain one of the never-infected loner holdouts, but my wife and I are going to keep on trying. There is no alternative that seems better after giving it some thought—if you still can.

The thing that really pisses me off is that I’ve known for over 3 years how dangerous and immune-evasive is—just from reading scientific papers and lots of stories. The knows. The maskless doctors should know. Inexcusable.

DavidjCrook,
@DavidjCrook@mastodon.world avatar

@edsuom Exactly. A couple of weeks ago I went with my wife to see the unmasked doctor. She even asked if we had covid as we were masked.
Are doctors really that stupid? How much damage does it do to children's brains? We do not understand. People seem to want to believe that it is just a mild cold, but all the evidence is that is not the case.
Taking precautions is grim but seems better than the alternative. has changed the world, but the world may not have noticed.

We had to say goodbye to our sweet Happy. She was the very best girl & we had so many adventures together. Happy hiked mountains in Colorado, camped with us in Texas, ran across California’s beaches & pranced through the Michigan snow.

She named herself Happy & loved every person she ever met. We have always felt extremely lucky to find her on Congress Ave & came to call her our Austin terrier since she was a little bit of every breed. We will miss her every day.

"8 Out of 10 Bats" new show on YouTube...

said: “My main thrust is making sure all these youngsters have got some space and airtime. A young bloke called Rufus made a film about wall lizards, edited it on his phone and sent it to us. It’s just brilliant. Another film-maker made a minute-long film about what happens to an apple when it falls off a tree. It’s absolutely fantastic and beautifully shot.”

DavidjCrook,
@DavidjCrook@mastodon.world avatar

@dgoldsmith Yes I have noticed the parallels.
In most Western societies people are conditioned to be positive. It is seen as a form of failure to not be on board the positive train. It is good for individual mental health.
The result is a population completely incapable of accepting and adapting to difficult circumstances in a realistic manner. It also produces politicians incapable of speaking harsh realities.
