@Dave2022@mastodonapp.uk

Pictures of Mountains & Molehills, Fungi & Feathered things and whatever nature puts in front of my camera. Outside is my favourite place. Except when it's raining.

All pictures are my own, all identifications are subject to being wrong. I know a little bit about everything but make no claims to be an expert in anything.

On this same spot only a month earlier were three mighty fine old trees. This time they were horizontal and sprouting fungi.

Mother Nature may have been pre-empted by a chainsaw but she wastes no time giving something else a chance for life.

They seek it here, they seek it there, that rarest of things, #winter #sunshine in England.

Spin Cycle

I've had several attempts at taking a photo of this scene, but it's not easy, firstly there's the problem of getting a good vantage point without either the camera or me falling into the river and secondly, the high level of contrast between the raging waters and the darkness of the moss covered rocks.

Red Rocks

Ideally I would have liked to get a better angle on this, but as I was stood on a very narrow ledge 15 foot up a cliff all I could do was hold the camera out at arms length and hope for the best

Dave2022,

Part of the Penrith Sandstone Formation, formed during the Cisuralian Epoch, at the start of the Permian Period.

The rock is coarse-grained cross-bedded aeolian (wind blown, so formed typically in a desert rather than a wet river estuary or tidal zone etc) sandstone.

RIP Busby

I'm only expecting people from the UK and over a certain age to understand this one

Swaying in the Wind

it was sub zero as I sat in the bird hide with my feet in two inches of water as the place was a bit on the flooded side. There were no birds to be seen anywhere so I resorted to taking pictures without them. A few did eventually show up but too far away for pictures and as I had lost all feeling in my fingers it was time to go anyway. How long would you have waited in freezing conditions?

Feeding Time at the Moo

I was going to call it 50 Shades of Moo but I'd need more cows.

Don't Spare the Birch

Couldn't decide if I prefered colour or black and white, so here's both. I'll let you decide for yourselves.

The one with the most votes wins.... absolutely nothing 🤣

Laying Your Life on the Lichen

Fascinating stuff, wish I knew more about it but I don't have time to read the book I bought last month, too busy going out to take photos.... speaking of which, catch you all later, I'm taking the dog out to see if the sun rises over the hill today as it is going to rain for the next week or so.

Feeding Time at the Moo

Some photos just leap out at you when it comes to corny captions. I also happen to like cows.

50 Shades of Brown

Sometimes I post photos that I know will receive very little interaction because they don't have mass appeal, but the important thing is that I like them and I think one or two people out there might to so it makes all the effort worthwhile

Dave2022,

@bobfisherphoto Partly ancient woodland, oak, beech, sweet chestnut, partly newer silver birch infill, it's a good mix of trees. 👍 🌳

Afternoon Swim

What is it with people wanting to swim in freezing cold water on a freezing cold day these days?

Dave2022,

@healthiswealth I think the increased footfall has been going on much longer than the pandemic although that is responsible for increasing numbers but of a different kind of people.

Dave2022,

@healthiswealth There's now a lot more litter and damage from people who have no respect for the countryside and do not know how to behave, fortunately they mostly don't venture too far from where they parked. There are numerous news articles about the littering, fires and damage to the infrastructure caused by people who behave like they're going to some music festival or rave

Dave2022,

@healthiswealth increase in leisure time and the number of people taking early retirement has led to a 7 day walking week and more pressure on the paths, that is for sure.

Dave2022,

@healthiswealth I've done Pen Y Fan a few times over the years, the first time was a totally different experience to the most recent (which was probably still 6 plus years ago or more). The direct path up from the road at the pass was like a motorway. Cars were parked along the verges as far as the eye could see in both directions. Continuing further along the ridge along the other side of the road to Fan Frynych where hardly anyone goes was like a different world.
