Copyright and "authors' rights" were never about protecting authors.
They are monopolistic, anti-consumer extortion coming from huge corporations and making the world a worse place.

Awesome video from Moritz Klein on designing a simple analog kick drum https://youtube.com/watch?v=yz37Yz315eU (think: 606/808/909 tones).
There was a lot of genius in the simplistic and super cheap early 80s Roland designs that are not only iconic, but still used - and basically irreplaceable - today.

People who are surprised about corporations training on "your" data - this was the plan all time along. I used Zoom dozens of times, I never paid for it - I was the product.

This is not just Zoom. Remember that many tech giants are not profitable - from Uber to Spotify and just burn through piles of cash. And borrowing money is not free anymore - they will "need" to squeeze more value out of you.

You don't like it? Then stop using Spotify et al., otherwise you are part of the problem.¯_(ツ)_/¯

One thing puzzles me: a bunch of friends (older but often left-leaning) told me, "you'll see, if you buy a home, you will become more conservative and care for property value."

I don't understand it; why?

Especially if I don't care for trading/renting (and I'm not a fckn flipper or rentier scum extracting the surplus value of labor from poorer people), but I just want to live somewhere for cheap.
Isn't it better to have a less valuable home (for tax rate)?
What is the reason I'm not seeing?

Getting some good recommendations today from the lovely Mastodon community, :) so I'll try my luck again, please help:

Evernote is going down the drain. :( I need a replacement.

I am a basic b***h, not a power user. I collect research papers links, code snippets, links to music, some images, + some basic personal notes. Sometimes shared notes with my wife.
I need Windows (app preferred over web) + iOS.
I would love to import stuff from Evernote.

Some ideas for a replacement in toots below:

@BartWronski@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar
  • Obsidian. Looks neat, and my wife uses it, but she is more of a power user of most things than I am. I am worried I'd need to configure stuff, customize, use plugins, and waste time on the process instead of the substance.

  • Anytype. Their principles look great, anti-tech-bro, open source, simple.

  • OneNote. Basic as my needs, on all platforms, backed by MS with decades of user software experience.

  • Notion. I don't know much about it, but many people are super hyped about it. :)

@Doomed_Daniel @nickappleton I personally don't see it as a reason for misanthropy, just as a proof we are emotional, irrational, and social beings. Sometimes it's beautiful (and makes us humans, not robots), sometimes ugly - and we've got to live with it. :)

Oh, and, obviously, punish all the grifters (like Altman).

The Internet (and capitalism) became so insufferable in 2023 that I changed my browsing/shopping habits for the worse or against my values.

Exhibit one: I hate big corps like Amazon, but because every single small store subscribes you to spam and newsletters on every purchase without your consent - I choose Amazon. :/

Exhibit two: I do half of my browsing now in private mode to not be spammed by endless ads vaguely related to any random search term.

Behind every single of those shitty decisions are some shitty people - it doesn't matter if those are product managers, marketing or social media managers, sales teams, or CEOs. They make the world actively worse. I really don't want to “engage” with any single purchase, brand, or product. The world doesn't need it.

One of the best not-so-secrets of NYC is summer outdoor public swimming pools. 100% free for all, some gorgeous (my favorite, McCarren is from 1936, features fantastic architectural style, and has Olympic-length lanes!).

Timely (just swam today :) ), CNN featured an article about why there are no more public swimming pools in US and it declined over decades: https://www.cnn.com/2023/07/22/business/public-pools-extreme-heat/index.html
You guessed it - individualism, racism, cutting public expenses, profitability.

BartWronski,
@BartWronski@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

Sometimes it's hard to believe that US had a lot of public goods, excellent public transit, the best rail and infrastructure in the whole world, taxed the wealthiest 94% on their income...
(though yes, it wasn't perfect as it was also incredibly racist back then)

But then came Reagan and the brain cancer of radical, neoliberal ideology and we live in a decaying, rotting, and collapsing empire...

The COVID as a concerning health risk is officially over.

(This is the statistic that cannot be lied/manipulated with "cause of death" etc)

BartWronski,
@BartWronski@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@santiago Covid didn't get super mild, so those statistics signify also the amount of infections happening. I could probably still die or get long Covid if very unlucky, but there are many low probability things that are life threatening, but I don't factor as risks in my daily choices. :)

Musk being upset that talented people he fired joined Meta (even if reportedly not working on Threads) shows you what would billionaires truly want, if they were allowed: 100% own you during the employment, and then at best erase your memory (NDAs) and experience (anti poaching clauses), at worst simply euthanize you. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I just cannot wrap around my head the idiocy of blocking APIs and account-free access. Isn't it effectively 100% killing any virality?
"Hey, have you seen this thing?" no longer works on e.g. work machines, with non users, and many more.
This is how you make a platform irrelevant. I just don't get it.
(Yes, Ockham razor says that he is such an idiot indeed, but there are many more people involved, no?)

Wrote a few notes on how I personally came to the decision to move away from San Jose to Tokyo.

Some of this is Bay Area specific, but hopefully this

  1. answers some common questions people have been asking me
  2. helps others with similar decisions about moving from <current place> to <new place>
BartWronski,
@BartWronski@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@barrelshifter @Migueldeicaza I wrote a while ago a post about my motivations to leave https://bartwronski.com/2021/06/28/on-leaving-california-and-the-silicon-valley/ and not surprisingly, some overlap :)

In 2y retrospective: Move to NYC was the best move I've done in my life. I finally have local friends and really enjoy my life outside of work. It's an amazing place, overwhelming with culture, communities, activities and random days bring smile to my face. It didn't hurt my career at all.

Homelessness is a direct and inevitable consequence of capitalism working exactly the way capitalists tell you capitalism is supposed to work.

BartWronski,
@BartWronski@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@HeavenlyPossum @fedup caveat: terminology difference.
When you hear "homelessness", you imagine well, unhoused person, which is a natural thing.

When a bigot hears "homelessness", they don't give a shit about poor people living in a car or families in shelters (for them, it's ok and part of the system). They think of aggressive people on the streets and this is the only problem for them.

BartWronski,
@BartWronski@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@HeavenlyPossum @fedup I think your point is valid, but without adjusting the terminology and communication (and I have no constructive idea or suggestion how), any communication will be futile due to this mismatch ("what the f are they talking about?!")

Apps like Apollo have made Reddit usable for millions of people. This is an idiotic move.
