@Forest_Jungle_Collective but that is not a steeple?

ArchaeoIain,
@ArchaeoIain@archaeo.social avatar

@Forest_Jungle_Collective I apologize. I have always thought there were two categories of thing on English churches: towers like this one; spires like the towers that have pointy bits on top. I think I was brought up to think of steeples as things like tall chimneys, but now I realise that was just a matter of the way I looked at things when I was English. Forgive me.

If you're going to write sequels to the Iliad, Ulysses and Aeneas seem like pretty random characters to place centre-stage.

ArchaeoIain,
@ArchaeoIain@archaeo.social avatar

@mrundkvist fair point. Now there is a project for someone. Write the story of what happened after Troy to some other actors in the Iliad. What happened to the losers?

Who wants recorded lectures? I'd want to read the script instead.

ArchaeoIain,
@ArchaeoIain@archaeo.social avatar

@mrundkvist it might make some lecturers better at their job. I hate seminars where the speaker reads their already densely written published text. Just been to one of those. I have no idea what main points he wanted to get across.

ArchaeoIain,
@ArchaeoIain@archaeo.social avatar

@mrundkvist once I had something of my own to say, I started to read my lectures, but I made sure that I was quite good at it, and that it was not the publishable written text. But if I had been asked I could have said something coherent. If they can't say anything coherent, perhaps they should take the hint and stop. Become an accountant.

never forget: we didn’t ask for robot cars. when polled US majorities have always wanted action on climate, good public transit & safe streets. but our leaders act without our consent.

last year, 78% polled wanted increased investment in US passenger rail, a number that went to 80% among women and 82% in cities and 91% among Black people. this year, 76% polled in the US said they are afraid of self-driving cars & just 9% say they trust them and that number is declining year to year

ArchaeoIain,
@ArchaeoIain@archaeo.social avatar

@seachanger such a good point. So much of the awful situation we find ourselves in has been driven by the greed of "entrepreneurs" with little thought for the consumers. I always think that everyone should watch "Who killed Roger Rabbit?" to realise that LA had one of the world's finest public transport systems, but that did not suit the motor car manufacturers.

Born in 1910, Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin perfected X-ray crystallography, a type of imaging using X-rays to determine a molecule’s three-dimensional structure.

She determined the structures of insulin, penicillin & vitamin B12, leading to tremendous advances in medicine.

Hodgkin was awarded a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1964. She also advocated for world peace, campaigning against both the Vietnam War & nuclear weapons. https://www.nobelprize.org/womenwhochangedscience/stories/dorothy-hodgkin #HistoryRemix #science #history

@mrundkvist there was a wonderful occasion thirty years ago when a British researcher came to Australia to find out about the mental health of primary school children. He expressed astonishment that the commonest response to his question "How do you feel?" was "I feel like a Toohey's". He described us as a sick society where primary school children would almost unanimously express a desire to drink beer. Of course as a Brit he had not idea that that was a pair of phrases from a universal advert.

Now that I got Republicans’ attention. That was actually Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump.

ArchaeoIain,

@Strandjunker I think you would have cast less aspersion on the Bidens if you had just said "The President's offspring" instead of Hunter Biden, and you would still have got the Republicans' attention. Perhaps not as much but still. They are the sort of people who would read the first part and ignore the second (deliberately) and state you falsity as fact.

Wait a sec. Let me get this straight. Politico and WaPo reported that Leonard Leo’s group instructed Kellyanne Conway’s Polling Company to “give” Ginni Thomas’s “consulting” company “another $25K” with “No mention of Ginni, of course.” Then Conway billed Leo for that $25K the same day? So, Leo was funneling cash to a Supreme Court justice’s wife through Conway’s company?!

At the moment only the Swedish sites have been imported, more content to follow.

You know when archaeologists find a human figurine and can't tell who it represents? This can mean either that we don't recognise the figurine's iconographic attributes or that there are no particular attributes. And here's the relief for us: in the second case, ancient people couldn't identify the figurine either. They would rely on the maker or owner to tell them "This is supposed to be Ullr".
