Scoop: I obtained the contract Samsung requires independent shops to sign to buy phone repair parts from them.

It requires:

  • "Daily" dumps of customer data
  • The "immediate destruction" of any phones a shop comes across that has third-party parts

https://www.404media.co/samsung-requires-independent-repair-shops-to-share-customer-data-snitch-on-people-who-use-aftermarket-parts-leaked-contract-shows/

@jasonkoebler A nice thing about a custom ROM: data encrypted and no backdoors, right, @GrapheneOS ? I wasn't worried about this when bringing my phone to a repair shop. “Immediate destruction” didn't cross my mind, however.

my recent #Amtrak experience was very on-brand

a beautiful big station with just 2 people working there and seemingly 2 trains per day

a cool clock on the wall showing wrong time

a timetable that doesn't show how much the train is delayed

a nice train that arrived 4 hours late, that can take bikes but with all bags removed

call it childish but I slapped a mirror of a car parked in a bike lane and it felt good

Hey #BikeTooter, what do you think about conduction headphones?

Any unobvious cons? What's your experience?

Yeah Montreal, let's train AI to detect suicide attempts rather than install platform screen doors.

“AI can correctly recognize one out of four people who will attempt suicide.”

@stephanie I guess they hope to make this number higher, but imo it's such a waste of time when there's a technology with 100% success rate (not as cOoL though)

I am still laughing at the Spoutible data breach.

The owner is a prick, and it’s why I never seriously considered joining. I wasn’t trading one mercurial billionaire for a wanna-be-mercurial billionaire.

So I find it hilarious that, less than 24 hours before their data breach was public, this smug “we have such a safe platform, that the only reason you’re not there is you won’t use a place owned by a Black man,” which of course does the fight against racism no favours. What a dick.

Anibyl,
@Anibyl@social.coop avatar

@snarkysteff Just reading about the leak, and wow. It seems like there was a way to retrieve all information about any user. I wouldn't trust these guys with my data, because if they make such mistakes I'm sure there's more.

and this post lol

It appears that my laptop died, and it makes no sense to repair it 😢 For the last few years it served us as a home media server.

Any recommendations for a modular mini-PC? Looking for something repairable, upgradable, open, powerful enough to survive the ever-growing performance requirements.

We were sent an #InfoSec course at work, suggesting that we

  1. must use passwords like 8.WS:Gmd[G[%k
  2. cannot reuse them
  3. must memorize them
  4. must change them every 3 months

That's a good way of making your employees to break the unreasonable rules, which will result in a less secure system overall.

@Em0nM4stodon I'm in the same boat. I'm feeling so stupid when coming up with paragraphs full of self-glorification and pretending to be in awe of companies whose names I don't recognize. I just want to do my job.

it's great when your bike can handle snow

still have to be careful with ice underneath

I will never buy bikes with rim brakes again.

Went on my first really rainy ride this season, and the brakes became ~50% less efficient.

I could use more reliability in the activity where my health is on the line.

@billyjoebowers Yeah I'm not ready for hydraulics either. I prefer when I can fix brakes myself, and dealing with the liquid seems like more work, although I'll admit that I haven't tried.

    Data deletion is an important
process for privacy, safety, and respect of consent. It should always be:

    4. Permanent :nes_fire:

Unless there is a legal reason for not doing so, this should be a default feature for every software and services storing users data.
