"The young people who are most closely associated with guns are more likely to be White people who have worse symptoms of anxiety or depression, according to new research conducted by Everytown for Gun Safety, American University’s Polarization and Extremism Research and Innovation Lab (PERIL) and the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC)."
Pasha Dashtgard, the director of research at PERIL and an expert on male supremacy and online radicalization, says that many white men are feeling unsure of how to articulate themselves as men in current society, and, as a result, younger white men are "turning to guns as an 'unimpeachable access to masculinity.'”
"A new report from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Columbia University says that court cases related to climate change have more than doubled in five years. Thirty-four of the 2,180 lawsuits have been brought forward on behalf of children, teens, and young adults.
And therein lies a huge problem for today’s Republican Party."
"A recent poll of young voters shows they care deeply about gun violence, economic inequality, LGBTQ+ rights, and climate change. All of those issues are only becoming more prominent."
Hi everyone 👋 I'm Nita & am in the last stages of my PhD thesis, busy writing! Researching the #sociology of young people, #climateactivism#PoliticalParticipation#youth at James Cook University in Australia. Looking forward to networks and sociology chats 🤓
Greg Dworkin responds to Greg Sargent's recent WaPo article (a link to it is in Dworkin's commentary linked below) showing that youth voters are trending more and more away from the GOP:
"Watch the Republicans try to raise the voting age to 65.:

"For many voters under 35 years of age, especially those on the left, the Supreme Court has become a political issue in the same way that climate change, gun violence and immigration have over the course of the past two decades, some political scientists and organizers have said."
In their ongoing pursuit of so-called #religiousFreedom, the #court and like-minded people are stepping over the bodies of #LGBTQ#youth literally stranded on the street, and turning a blind eye to the horrible #injustice all around them, in order to maintain their false ideal of pretending they are fighting 'sin.'
"In the broadest sense, the Republican-appointed justices have moved to buttress the affluence and status that allow white people to wield the most influence in society, and to diminish the possibility that accelerating demographic change will force a renegotiation of that balance of power. "
The title of photographer Kyle Weeks’ latest project Good News goes back to the “constant stream of negative stories” he observed about his home country of Namibia, and Africa at large … “Why is there never good news?”
He found his inspiration in Ghana where he spent 6 years photographing the vibrant youth culture:
“The youth have such an authentic approach to creativity. They have a completely different frame of reference. It’s so authentic and unlike what I see in the Western world”
"Americans are dying younger and poorer than their parents. They are more likely to live their last few decades in chronic pain, and more likely to live in debt. This is not an accident or the accumulation of millions of individual random choices. It is the product of deliberate policy decisions that have stripped younger generations of opportunity so that older ones can live in relative comfort."
"And last week, the Republican Party made clear its decision to continue down that path, shedding all pretense of caring about young voters. A 2024 budget proposal released by the Republican Study Committee sets out the party’s priorities: Make the next generation work longer, and essentially guarantee them an unlivable planet."
