"The human-centric chatter, of course, misses the point – why a mature urban #tree is cut back so severely that it may never regenerate or #spring into joyful blossom as it once did."
The House on Thurs approved #legislation to extend the expiration date for #FederalFunding later into March, sending the measure to prevent a partial govt shutdown that was set for Sat to the #Senate, where it is expected the pass.
Another, larger #shutdown cliff awaits just a wk later, when funds for the rest of the govt, including the #Defense & #State depts, will also expire, unless #Congress acts.
But Thursday’s bill would push the funding deadline for several agencies — including the depts of #Veterans Affairs, #Transportation, #Energy, #Agriculture, #Interior, #Housing & #UrbanDevelopment, & the #EPA — until Mar 8. Finances for the rest of the federal govt would expire on Mar 22, 2 wks later than under current #law.
A 21-kilometer #solar cycle track in Hyderabad, #India, generates electricity while providing shade for cyclists.
Inspired by a similar project in South Korea, it cost $12 million and has a 16 MW solar roof. The power generated supports local infrastructure and saves energy costs.
The project promotes #cycling and offers a potential model for sustainable #UrbanDevelopment, with the possibility of replication in other Indian cities.

Let’s Ditch the Stroads
Strong Towns - September 26, 2023
“Development should be concentrated on local streets where land value is high. Concentrating your density in areas built for walking rather than along stroads gives people options on how they want to get around and where the streets connect rather than divide what's on the other side of the street.”
It's only when you see it from a distance that you realise quite how badly Glasgow City Centre has been overrun by generic, soulless boxes which add little to the city's skyline. At the rate things are going, Glasgow risks losing a lot of the feel and atmosphere which makes it unique.
Let's face it, while the buildings in the foreground of this picture are clearly Glasgow, those in the background could be anywhere in the world and have very little going for them.
This is not to say we shouldn't build new buildings, just that they should be unique enough to add to the spirit of the city and not detract from it.
I am so on board with Tyler Vigen’s extremely petty and niche #research
into the origins of a random pedestrian bridge
It is really inspirational to see how persistent his research is, and how resourceful his thinking is to find new avenues of inquiry when a trail of evidence ends
For me, the takeaway is to look for names of key stakeholders as keywords rather than relying on project names, project codes or place names
