Interesting question posed on reddit osr. BECMI or B/X?

https://old.reddit.com/r/osr/comments/1az60a8/becmi_or_bx/

They are very nearly the same game up to level 15. But BECMI had 6 to 9 years where TSR was still publishing material for the game. There are a lot of rule variations published for BECMI in the Gazetteer supplements.

My answer is still probably neither though. There are some things in AD&D, 3E, 4E that I like to incorporate into the game.

Hey #DungeonMagazine fans, I got a notification today from a comic shop that I've ordered from in the past. They have issues 2, 6, 7, and 8 available for really cheap! I already own copies and I'm not looking to flip any of them, so I thought it would be of interest to other collectors and fans:

For #ValentinesDay, a short story about #dice and #truelove.

Back in 2011, I was dating an attractive young woman who told me she didn't play #DnD, but wanted to show me her D&D set. Weirdly, it was the 1977 "Holmes Edition" #BasicDnD set.

"What's weird about that," you ask? Reader, my girlfriend was born in 1981. How does a non-gaming Millennial start her #ttrpg collection with a box four years older than herself?

contrarian,

I admit, I'm genuinely awful at choosing good gifts for anyone, let alone for girlfriends. It's hurt relationships in my past. But just once, in that time and that place, the stars aligned and I had the perfect gift for a pretty girl.

That's right, readers. I gave her a vintage #TSR six-sided die.

If you are looking for something to read while traveling over the holidays. Here is a free pdf of interviews with 18 designers of the RPG industry of the 70s, 80s, 90s. Most of the interviews are with TSR employees, but a few big names from other endeavours as well.

Two things became clear to me recently.

  1. There is no WOTC, only Hasbro.

  2. D&D is a digital brand now.

It’s up to us to keep our hobby strong. Buy physical RPG books and PDFs direct from independent publishers. Don’t become reliant on online digital tools. Use paper character sheets. Let players use options from non-WOTC 5e books. Play other RPGs.

What else can we do strengthen our hobby from the whims of any single company?

@slyflourish @gizmomathboy has always been a weird and incomplete business model for the same way it’s weird for with ongoing updates.

The digital model has been heralded ever since someone in the got the idea to use their home computer to manage character sheets.

(Fun fact: didn't publish character sheets until player-run zines had already been doing so for a couple years.)

Dragon Magazine #52, August 1981. The first issue I ever bought, with Faerie Dragon cover art by #BorisVallejo. There's a great article in this issue concerning the differences between the Holmes Basic and Moldvay Basic rules, by Holmes and Moldvay, respectively.

Found on a floppy disk for Amiga computers: Dragonlance art by Clyde Caldwell, 1987, that was used in a TSR Dragonlance calendar that year. (I also have that calendar, which is pinned to my wall.)

This is a find-your-people post for TTRPG folk.

Please respond by saying what sorts of TTRPG things you're pretty likely to either talk about or respond to if you see them.

This can be a list of games (D&D! Tribe 8! Fate!) or categories (the weirdest of indie stuff! NSR! Anything PBtA!), topics (Worldbuilding! Publishing!), stuff you're making, meta-commentary (The State Of The Industry), and so on.

Then maybe share, and if the replies are building up, check them for new people.

darrelplant,

@LeviKornelsen

I’m a mostly “back in the day” guy. Started playing #D&D as freshman in high school back in 1975. Hung out incessantly at a SF&F bookstore/game shop in Eugene through HS, then worked there for about 4 years, spending most of my earning on…books and games. Then they mostly sat in boxes in my garage for 35+ years until I started lazily cataloging them. #TTRPG #boardgames #TSR #GDW #SJG #Traveller #CarWars #UpFront

So, nerds. The Dungeon Hobby Shop Museum posted an announcement on Facebook claiming the courts have declared WotC doesn't own "TSR." Someone asked, "Then who does?" I replied simply, "WotC." The DSHM replied but immediately blocked me, so I can't read the reply.

So, putting aside the weakness of character that goes with blocking people who merely disagree, why reply to me if you're going to make sure I never know what you said to me? #DHSM #DnD #TSR #WotC
