Dear event organizers, thanks for putting it all together, but please also state:

  • your time zone (and be explicit about "UTC+-???", instead of just "EST")

  • your event hashtag (is it # EventName?, or # EventNameWithYear?)

hugovk,
@hugovk@mastodon.social avatar

@mariatta I've been meaning to ask you what the hashtag is for PyCon? Last year I saw all of:

My wish is also for event organisers to include the day names with dates, it can make it much easier to plan.

For example:

Wednesday, May 15 - Thursday, May 23, 2024

For some events, knowing weekend/weekday or even specific day means I instantly know if can rule it out.

I am only a few minutes into @nedbat ‘s #PyConUS2023 keynote and I can already tell I am going to love it.

At #PyConUS2023, @davidism facilitated an open space discussion of "maintainer #burnout, how to survive it, and maybe how to prevent it." Our notes, my analysis, and useful links in a new blog post:

What are the early warning signs of open source maintainer burnout?

I've drafted a checklist/questionnaire here: https://governingopen.com/resources/signs-of-burnout-checklist.html

Would love suggestions/additions! This is a list I brainstormed just now, in order to create something to iterate on - I suspect it's missing quite a lot.

@shauna ooooh, I am writing a follow-up to the #PyConUS2023 open space on maintainer burnout that @davidism facilitated, and this link is going in there!

I have gotten a negative on an antigen test and a Lucira rapid molecular test since leaving a few days ago, in addition to my negative tests while in Salt Lake City, so things are looking good so far re: . Hope others have also remained uninfected!

brainwane,
@brainwane@social.coop avatar

And, as of today, a negative PCR test, nearly a week after I left Salt Lake City. Looks like 's mitigations, and my precautions, worked for me!

More on what I did: https://www.harihareswara.net/posts/2023/pycon-2023-argument-clinic-mitigating-covid-risk/ & https://www.harihareswara.net/posts/2022/how-i-thought-about-an-in-person-conference-choice/ . I did find that the CO2 levels in some indoor spaces were ~500-600ppm, near outdoors levels, and thus was ok with lowering my mask to sip something indoors, which I did ~15-20 times.

Clear mask I wore on stage: https://jellim.com/

I met @sethmlarson at ! 😁

He's one of the maintainers of @urllib3, one of the most (the most?) downloaded Python libraries, you probably don't use it directly, but you probably use something that uses it. 😎

@PyConUS Does anyone know if there are plans to send out a COVID survey again this year after the event is done? I'm curious if we saw any spread like we did last year.

Got to hang out a bit with @1st1 again at #PyConUS2023, we even got lost in the maze of the venue and almost end up having lunch in a different conf 😅

Side note, he walks as fast as Uvloop.

I still don't get over the feeling of considering HIM, with all he's done, a friend 🤩

I learned about two new things at #PyConUS2023 PyPI Organizations and #TrustedPublishers, but I got the feeling the needs have not been identified properly

  1. Orgs - single organization might be the popular case, but the interface feels like that is the only case for now
  2. Trusted Publishers - writing "like Github" while having only Github as an option is ridiculous, what about GitLab, Codeberg, sr.ht or self-hosted instances of any of them? what about dedicated CI services?

This past weekend at PyCon US I received this - sort of the Python community lifetime achievement award.

The projects that lead to this award were never solo efforts, they were all team efforts, so for me the significance of this award is as a reminder of the things we built together more than as a personal thing.

(Some have already made fun of me for saying that ("oh, how Hollywood of you"), but it's the truth and I refuse to let those clowns bring me down. 😝)

I finally met @davidism, the current maintainer of Flask, Click, Jinja... at #PyConUS2023

He's been doing a great job keeping and improving these tools. 😎🚀

The #PyConUS2023 closing keynote by the amazing @willingc who everyone admires and loves. 🤩🐍

It included a shout-outs to friends helping Python, like @mkennedy and the @talkpython. 🎙️

She mentioned @FastAPI, highlighting the work done for translations and the docs. 🌐

She also highlighted the work done for Diversity and Inclusion, led by the amazing @Marlene and other great people. ✨🌍

No surprise she would receive an award just right after, for her work with the Python community. 🫂

4 years ago, I listed https://www.harihareswara.net/posts/2019/tropes-and-missing-stories-in-art-about-programming/ some "missing stories in art about programming".

2023 has announced that they're seeking short films. https://2023.pygotham.tv/2023/03/04/announcing-pygotham-2023/

I hope some enthusiasts will use this opportunity to make new art that reflects the emotional experience of making technology.

@benb Much appreciated!

You're not alone in finding those the most salient takeaways.

BTW, as a #PyConUS2023 attendee, you can visit https://events.hubilo.com/pycon-us-2023/session/194110 to re-watch the session (albeit without captions; I assume the YouTube upload in a few weeks will have captions).
