"Urumqi Road" is compiled from footage of thousands of mostly young people who spilled out onto the streets of Shanghai & other #Chinese cities in late Nov 2022 to mourn deaths of a #Uyghur family in #Urumqi, #Xinjiang.
The Sexual predator criminal defendant is NOT immune from prosecution, #DC#Circuit rules.
The unanimous ruling is a big win for #DoJ and prosecutors. "Any executive immunity that may have protected him while he served as president no longer protects him against this prosecution."
three-judge D.C. Circuit panel — agreed with district court Judge Tanya Chutkan’s December 2023 decision denying Trump’s motion to dismiss his #federal#election#subversion indictment on presidential immunity grounds.
Three-judge D.C. Circuit panel ruled:
That “it would be a striking paradox if the President, who alone is vested with the constitutional duty to ‘take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed,’ were the sole officer capable of defying those laws with impunity.”
In the unanimous 57-page decision, the court ruled that Trump—and any other former president—can be prosecuted for alleged crimes they committed while in office. The court concluded that Trump’s arguments for immunity were unconvincing, and that “the risk that former Presidents will be unduly harassed by meritless federal criminal prosecutions appears slight.”
Further, the court determined that, “For the purpose of this criminal case, Trump has become citizen Trump, with all of the defenses of any other criminal defendant. But any executive immunity that may have protected him while he served as President no longer protects him against this prosecution.”
The criminal defendant has until Feb. 12 to petition the Supreme Court #scotus gto review the D.C. Circuit’s opinion.
“…fmr President #Trump's stance would collapse our system of separated powers by placing the President beyond the reach of all 3 Branches. #PresidentialImmunity against federal #indictment would mean that, as to the President, the #Congress could not #legislate, the #Executive could not #prosecute & the #Judiciary could not review. We cannot accept that the office of the Presidency places its fmr occupants above the #law for all time thereafter.
#Canada should legalize #mace and other self-defense #weapons like #guns. Self-defense is legal in Canada, but you can't own something that's specifically for self-defense against another human. They have bear mace, though.
Self-defence is legal - but very strict - you're required to use the bare #minimum of #force you can. If you #kill or seriously #injure someone in self-defence in Canada, you are almost certainly being #criminally charged, and probably #convicted, including #jail time.
Note that even being caught carrying #mace, even if it's labelled "bear mace", can get you a "carrying an illegal #weapon" charge - not just theoretically, they #prosecute all the time for this.
This, by David French, is very good, but I wish I shared his faith that evidence presented at Trump's trial will convince his supporters to stop believing Trump's blatant lies. I am afraid that the lies are what they like about him most. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/01/opinion/trump-indictment.html
