#Portland#pdx has been breaking-in a fresh new #pdxTraffic commissioner (with no bureau director for 6 months...), and Mingus Mapps seems to still be focused on the stack of boondoggle carway projects #PBOT has put in front of him. Seems to think that the members of the Bike + Pedestrian Advisory Committees are here to lobby for more funding for the bureau of traffic to continue the status quo of maintaining the whole transportation system for #cars1stAlwaysOnly. Drivers feeling the $30M cut?
Follow the #KidicalMassPDX hashtag to stay tuned for more rides and also LMK if you're into doing the facebook group, emails, website, flyers, whatevers. Also some #BikeBus organizing coming at the SE KMpdx ride in August, with @bikeloudpdx. #pdxBikes
So what is going on here, is that the straight flat used-to-be-a-train grade and all of the available right-of-way space on it, is used up by the state highway department to maximize the number of cars sitting at a red light or waiting in line to reach the next bottleneck. In this case, it's the Ross Island Bridge over one mile away. 🤣 5:30pm every damn weekday like this #pdxTraffic#pdxBikes. #TrafficProtectedBikeLane
a tour of the streets and spaces under and around the extensive freeway and highway infrastructure in South #Portland. We'll see, but mostly not ride on, the world-renowned (for how seismically unsound it is) Marquam Bridge, the Ross Island Bridge, the infamous Harbor Drive that was never removed, Macadam, I-5, I-405, Naito, Barbur, and some sketchy tunnels. + How to get around the freeway when the elevator is broken!
#independenceDay thought about #FreeRangeKids: Can we just put one of those chalk markers on every kid's #bike and give them an unlimited supply of chalk? Then your #transportation dept can follow them around with cones, and viola you have a complete and connected #bikewayNetwork. To get out of the #carSupremacy rut, start with at least one car-free day per month and give the kids bikes + lessons if they need them.
The #Portland Bureau of #Transportation (#PBOT) spends over $2M per DAY to watch cars turn our streets into gravel and re-apply yellow centerline paint. We can absolutely afford to stop doing that for a day and give kids #pdxBikes
You can see ~ Pittock Mansion from NE 28th and Glisan, but also evidence of a #RoadDiet where the centerline stripes were ground off and 4 lanes replaced with 2 + center turn lane and (unfortunately, door-zone) bike lanes and the speed reduced to 25mph. #Portland#Vision60or70Something#pdx#VisionZero
If you want to see this spot from Pittock Mansion, check out the Heavy Bike Hill Climb Challenge on August 6th at 4pm from Jamison Square #pdxBikes#pedalPaloozaPDX all you need is 40lb of beer + bike
6pm Queer Creatures Ride, how gay are dolphins #pdxBikes? "Use your judgement about whether your youthful critters would be mortified or excited to hear about things like the astounding diversity of genitalia in the world." 😂 #pedalPalooza#Science#Queer, and also meeting at Ladd's Circle, at 6:30 is the #Corker Appreciation Ride! (is a ride?) Thank you corkers!
6pm tonight! Ride with @bikeloudpdx and see where our traffic dept and police have failed to report on and remedy crash factors in our #pdxBikes infrastructure
Stay cool out there! The Portland area has a heat advisory for Tue July 4 and Wed July 5. With temperatures in the 90s into the evening, make sure you're drinking plenty of water and cooling off regularly.
Thursday at 6pm! ☀️ Crash Analysis ride to sites of car-on-bike crashes to study how the #infrastructure and traffic plans may have contributed, with the police reports and other data. We will document existing conditions and confirm measurements! 📏 🤓 📐 🚲 📣
An agency that cared about safety would make this a #LeadingPedestrianInterval (LPI / head start), but currently it's just a tiny hole in the left-turn cycle that "one" could, theoretically, take advantage of to get moving before the cars. #BarburBlvd#pdxBikes#BusLaneRoadDiet
cracks me up that someone came up to the corker appreciation gathering to ask if anybody had chain lube and probably five people did 😆 #BikeTooter#pedalPalooza#pdxBikes
Next Thursday at 6, it's @bikeloudpdx's monthly nerd night, join us for an easy ride to study locations from our Bike Crash Report infrastructure analysis project, several chances for volunteers to take a report home to work on. (Where are we starting? somewhere inner-ish, boost this for updates) #pdxBikes
The Brooklyn neighborhood has the dubious distinction of being one of Portland's only close-in neighborhoods w/ zero greenway miles. While the 2030 Bike Plan calls for greenways on SE 16th Ave, 9th Ave, and Center St, none of those exist yet — except for 1 block, tomorrow only! (Sat July 22) Walk, roll, or ride on a temporarily-calmed section of 16th Ave anytime noon–8pm:
crushing before/after pics of how we made this street more deadly.
Remember the traffic models for the Hawthorne repaving somehow needing to deliver a greater number of cars to here (instead of #pdxBikes lanes) from the other side of the bridge where we spent millions to keep sending them instead of finishing Naito the easy way. Couldn't be 2 spare lanes of #InducedDemand.
