Today in Labor History April 2, 1863: Bread riots occurred in Richmond, Virginia, as a result of a drought the previous year, combined with a blockade by the Union Army and overall Civil War-related shortages. Food riots occurred throughout the South around this time, led primarily by women. During the Richmond riot, women broke into storehouses and shops, stealing food, clothing and jewelry before the militia was able to restore order.

The trade has been accused of incentivizing & , especially in unstable parts of the world, and an ecosystem of private collectors, dealers, auction houses and museums has sprung up to handle items of dubious origin. A number of recent U.S. and Europe-based cases have centered on paperwork.

is one of the most extreme cases. The country’s temples were largely intact before a civil war broke out in the 1970s between government forces and the communist . At the time the looting mostly concentrated on and post-Angkorian items. Intense of sites has been a more recent development, dating back to early 2000s.

The continued well into the 2000s..

Today in Labor History February 11, 1918: Tens of thousands of unemployed Danish syndicalists stormed the Stock Exchange in Copenhagen. Only the leaders knew where the demonstration march was heading. To trick the police, they leaked that their target was the Pork Hall, which they were going to loot. Participants, armed with clubs, attacked the stockbrokers. Later, they attacked police with rubble from a construction site. Media sources compared the storm with the ravages of the Red Army and looting in the Finnish Civil War,

At least 15 people have been killed in Papua New Guinea after mass riots broke out yesterday over pay cuts in the public sector. The government claimed that the pay cut was a “glitch” and would be reversed in the next month’s paycheck, but it was not enough to calm the fears of those protesting who proceeded to loot stores and burn a vehicle in front of the Prime Minister’s residence.

From the ballad of

" is expected to make landfall as a Category 4 hurricane either late Tuesday or early Wednesday morning.
It could be the strongest hurricane to impact in decades.
Otis quickly strengthened into a major Category 3 hurricane on Tuesday afternoon. Just six hours earlier on Tuesday morning it was a tropical storm with 70 mph winds."

You will see coverage of behaviour labeled as "".
It's a loaded word – but context is everything.

What actually happens in a catastrophe like this:
The electricity grid goes down. Acess roads are impassable.
No or come in.
Grocery stores and pharmacies go dark: lights off, computers off, cash registers out of service.
People go hungry.
They look for cash but ATMs are out too.
You gotta eat, so people take food, diapers, medicines from stores.

Here's an example of using the word "", right in the headline and without context.

"Acapulco ravaged by looting after Hurricane Otis" from Reuters. (Not gonna to link to the article).

Yes, technically it is looting. But by witholding context, @Reuters is deepening existing prejudices. It's irresponsible.

Reuters needs to do better. Unless it wants to be compared to the Daily Mail, which has blithely appended the word "opportunistic" without evidence.
