"while shrinking our individual “carbon footprints” alone certainly won’t save the world — and that responsibility certainly cannot be asked of the least advantaged —

many of us do
have far more
privilege and power to reduce emissions in our everyday lives than we admit.

Many of us can walk, or roll, or share rides whenever we possibly can, rather than shrugging at how quickly we believe those actions will be dwarfed by a few dozen moneyed special interests."

How to protest #climateChange instead of buying gas daily:
Whenever you can, ride your bike instead of driving.
If it's hard, get an #eBike.
If it's raining, get some fenders, a hat, maybe a poncho.
If you don't have space, or need to bus, get a folding bike.
If it's scary, be brave, but stay safe.
Don't make excuses, change takes effort. Ask for help.
Vote, based on this experience.

If you can't, then don't. But there are trikes, adaptive bikes, and technology that can help if you want that.

Did the Paradise Loop in Marin yesterday for the first time in a few years. Discovered there is now an honor shack for snacks and water at 2900 Paradise. Well stocked.

Best thing was a note inside on the board from Soren, who did his first Paradise loop. 6 years old. “Dont give up.”

It’s a good thing he wrote that note because the wind got a lot stronger and colder from that point on and I didn’t like it one bit. But he told me not to give up. So I didn’t.

Another shot of the opening of the shed and the sign, but also showing the gated driveway with the house number 2900 in brassy numbers.
Soren’s note, pinned to the corner of a bulletin board, printed in pencil in childish letters: Don’t give up (the n is squeezed in there and there’s no apostrophe) This is my first Paradise Loop I am 6. By Soren

Just back from a 47.2km bike ride with @donburnside. Quite an adventure that included looking for (and finding) my lost phone that bounced out of it's holder when we were way off course and river-rock hopping.

It may also have included a couple of beer stops. Gotta stay hydrated!

Electric vehicles are making an increasingly bigger dent in oil use, both globally and in Australia. In 2022, they displaced the use of 1.5m barrels of oil a day. Daily global oil demand is around 97m barrels, so there's a long way to go.

But it is not electric cars doing most of the work. It is e-bikes and mopeds. These #micromobility devices are ten times as common as electric cars globally (led by widespread adoption in #China), and twice as popular as e-cars in Australia. In 2022, electric micromobility devices globally displaced more than four times as much oil as electric cars.

If you've never tried one, consider giving it a go. Most bike shops will give you a free test ride. Personally, getting an #ebike has been one of the best decisions I've made in the last few years and has been one important way of maintaining our household record of never having owned a car.

Finally did some tinkercad-ing to fix the computer/controller on my wife's ebike. We'll be all ready for warm temps and dry roads when they arrive.

That was some seriously weak plastic for holding this on the bike, especially with the two wire bundles that bolt onto the top and torque it all of the time.

Got an Abus Granit Extreme 2500 U-lock today. Can confirm the mechanism quality is outstanding. This is a new generation of u-lock that is reinforced against battery-fed grinder attacks. They still can be defeated, but the time to cut is extended to multiple cuts over minutes instead of seconds.

Wow! I didn't realize, here in the States at least, that the Big Easy and the electric are both the same price, around $5,500.

That makes it exceedingly difficult to choose between the two and I could easily see myself using either one in different situations.

Hmmmm...

Does anyone have any advice or experience with either to persuade me in direction or another?

I always wanted to try biking to work someday. But I’m not fit enough to handle a regular bike over the long distance and hills. And then COVID hit, and any hope or chance I had diminished that much more.

Our household finally has a working electric vehicle!

Picked up this Benno 46er e-Cargo bike today and brought it home from Melbourne on the train. (It just fits in the V-line bike area!)

Manufacturer calls this an "etility" bike, normal-ish bike size with bigger carrying capacity. We're intending for it to replace much of our small town car use.

(I often don't ride because either I need to move something biggish/heavy-ish, or because I don't want to arrive somewhere sweaty. This should help with both.)

#bicycle #ebike #EV

The same e-bike squished into the "heavy luggage / bike" area on a v-line train

Two months into e-bike ownership, and have joined the annoying club of "I didn't think this thing would change my habits as much as it did". 😆

One frustration, it came due for first (free) service and I learned only a bike shop with the approved software tools can reset the service indicator. 😡
