"Once a vibrant platform for artists, #DeviantArt is now buckling under the weight of bots and greed—and spurning the creative community that made it great."
My account is 22 years old, not updated since 2010. Amazed I can still login. The whole site looks like it could have been a Mastodon-like network; it clearly was a social web, before that name even existed.
Now looks like a wasteland. All posts and comments have been automatically tagged as protected from "AI scrappers" – given how much of present-day galleries are just AI-generated, that's kind of funny.
More thoughts on #DeviantArt and #AI. They are pushing the idea that you pay for use of their image creator (#DreamUp) and sell your creations.
The idea that “prompting” is in any way a marketable skill is pretty ridiculous. People even add watermarks to their images, because people might ARTTHIEFF!!!11 them snort.
However, I do actually quite like that AI art is devaluing slick, clichéd rubbish, that was previously the most popular stuff in most art communities.
Now anyone can produce a beautiful catgirl elf portrait in teh style of the top of ArtStation, dramatic lighting, digital art, sexy cute beautiful furry anime.
As people who follow what I’ve had to say on AI “Art” know, I'm more ambiguous on it than most Mastodonians, but having spent a bit of time on #DeviantArt with the filter off, oh my!
It's pretty foolish to let your platform be spammed like that, some people are auto-uploading dozens a day. I think even the prompting is automated. And it's just so… boring . And it barely gets any engagement anyhow.
It's certainly clarified for me that my reaction to AI art is definitely ‘boring, don't care’, I don't need to reason myself into disliking it! #Art#AI#DeviantArt
It would be interesting to know what the history of it is, because the account is old, and presumably was a real person at some point. Original account owner gone to the dark side? Sold? Hacked?
@john DeviantArr? :> now I almost want a link to your profile to see what you've put up there ^^;
Also, yes: AI content should be weeded out. Probably by a new form of content ID and a snitch network so every server doesn't have to process the file again. If it's tagged AI generated, it's tagged AI generated.
If anyone is on DeviantArt, I have decided to revive my old account. DeviantArt is really where I got started, and I kinda like it's crazy messiness. https://www.deviantart.com/nyctopterus
After spending a couple of days on #DeviantArt, I realise that it really has a lot for artists that I missed. People look at your old stuff! There are staff actively curating and promoting art. People comment, a lot.
The reverse-chronological (or even algorithmic) feeds are difficult for artists. It's kinda depressing when your two or three artwork posts a month get swamped in a sea of one-liners, and then lost to time.
Of course, the disadvantage, which I think is part of the reason I left, is that you want to get your artwork in front of non-artists too, which places like DA have few of.
I wonder if Tumblr is now going to go the way of DeviantArt in become a sea of soulless same-style AI generated images.
There isn't a large image sharing platform out there that hasn't been poisoned by this new finance-driven fad.
AI generated art is an ouroboros.
The fact that I, an independent artist with very limited means, am held to a higher legal standard in relation to copyright than these resource-rich companies is also maddening.
I want to make our little corner of the fediverse a bit more unique, so I thought it might be a cool idea to take some classic memes and use the AI Horde to customize them for our respective themes....
It depends on who you are and how far you are willing to go to achieve it.
Yes, we’re talking here about the choices that you have, and the ones robbed from you.
Otherwise, we would be talking complacency, precarity and victimhood, which is a stereotype of conservatives/liberals and their motto is kill or be killed.
