A few days ago I finished the 9th book of Kirsten Beyer's Full Circle series. Just one left. I have been fighting the temptation to just read the next one in the series, one after another. I don't want my brain to get too used to #StarTrek fiction. I'm mostly a non-fiction reader. So I've been reading 1-3 books between each Beyer book. Architects of Infinity was really damn good, though. I still have an untouched stack of #DS9 books that I will also take my time with. #bookstodon#books
One the subject of non-fiction, part of my brain has been trying to convince the rest of my brain not to get too deeply involved in any new studies or writing project until I read every book I own. I can't overstate what a feat that would be. My personal library is very much excessively large. Like seriously life changing large. Yes, I have read a good deal of my library, but there is still so much more to get to. My brain might burst. #books#bookstodon
Figured I would start moving over some of my high effort posts to the fediverse. This is a post I originally made on the /r/wot and then posted to books@kbin.social and wheeloftime@kbin.social. Hope it's all right that I'm re-posting here. Just trying to do my part to get some content going...

In a typical supermarket, one dollar could buy 1200 calories of potato chips and cookies. The same dollar could only buy 250 calories of carrots and other whole vegetables. On the beverage aisle, you can buy 875 calories of soda for a dollar, but a dollar will only buy you 170 calories of fruit juice from concentrate. These numbers show why people with limited money to spend on food spend it on the cheapest calories.
I had an account on an instance that self-destructed over in-fighting due to the Harry Potter game. So I took a break from social media but I'm back now.
My name is Scott. I live in #Mexico and speak both English and Spanish. I love #music#gaming and #books. I am here to make new friends and hopefully learn about new music, games, and books that I may have missed.
I also have 6 #cats who are all amazing if not a little exhausting. 😍
Hey Seattle folks (or folks who moved away from Seattle but still have a working library card <whistles innocently>), you should know that Seattle Public Library currently has a great section on Libby for Pride month, over 200 LGBTQ+ nonfiction titles.
Today's indie author review! Elias and the Egg by Mere Rain:
"Trajan is a dragon... Elias is sweet and gentle, dealt a crappy hand... a delightful story, with a nice twist on the usual mpreg stories. I consumed this book in an embarrassingly short amount of time..."
When you find something in life that you love doing, make the time to do it. There are lots of things we like, but not quite so many that we love— it’s these things which are most important, because they shape the very core of who we are.
If you're looking for a character-driven, immersive, heartbreaking yet heartwarming novel, I highly recommend Calling for a Blanket Dance by Oscar Hokeah. Stayed up late finishing it last night/this morning. Brilliant. @bookstodon#books#NativeAmerican#reading
The closest available copy of Jon Ronson's book about extremists was at the Parliamentary #Library in the Old Town, and I need the exercise, so I cycled here. It's a hidden gem among #Stockholm's #libraries, on a par with the National Library and the Academy of Letters where I usually hang out.
The Chaos Machine by Max Fisher has made me better understand the collapse in visibility on Medium for content that isn't despairing, enraging, or get-quick-rich... Algos want to sell isolation & dependence on a platform for money.
Don't fit that mold so I'm moving my stuff away
One of my first newer stories moved is my wildflower scam story-- It's now available w/ no paywalls & no email asks here:
"Rien n'est si important à l'homme que son état ; rien ne lui est si redoutable que l'éternité."
Blaise Pascal was born #OTD in 1623. Like his contemporary René Descartes, Pascal was also a pioneer in the natural and applied sciences. Pascal wrote in defense of the scientific method and produced several controversial results. via @Wikipedia
WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE, bad things happen, even when some of the worlds are virtual. Breathtaking science fiction thriller plays on the edge of quantum entanglements between games and life. A MINUS
I've spent all week reading The Murderbot Diaries and I'm still in the thick of it. Great sci-fi with a fun attitude and narration. Interestingly, it's the second series I've read this year with an non-binary or agender main character who isn't well described. Kind of feels like the novella equivalent of a custom character in an RPG.
(Awesome Japanese cover shown. The original novels are careful to keep the character completely covered up, but the Japanese ones have an interpretation of them.) #books#bookstodon#murderbotdiaries
Been meaning to start a reading thread, to log & celebrate the books I read. I can't forget to maintain it until I start, so...
Listened to Redemption's Blade by @aptshadow - another interesting rework of classic fantasy tropes from the mind that brought you the underappreciated Spiderlight. This story comes alive thanks to its interesting ensemble, my favourite being the shifty artefact hunters Cat & Fisher. Read if you want classic fantasy adventure with a thoughtful twist.
The Weird and the Eerie by Mark Fisher - Non-fiction on the nature of the weird & the eerie in fiction, the distinctions, between them, & how they play out in certain books, shows, films, & even albums. I enjoyed the way it dug into what the eerie is & how it affects us. Also got some good recommendations for other reading from it. Read if you're interested in fiction that unsettles, or want to make your own writing more uncanny.

What's everyone reading this week (6/19/23)?
Anyone in the middle of something they're really enjoying?...
