Just finished a one hour Bahasa Indonesia lesson using iTalki. Site name sounds silly when you say it out loud, but a good way to find experienced teachers. My instructor teaches English and Indonesian at a university in Malang and has visited Keio and Kanda Universities in Tokyo, so he knew my context quite well. Very helpful. #Bahasaindonesia
This may be mainly travel for now as that is what I am lucky enough to do for the next year. So, food, landscapes, reflections, and maybe music or just weird things that catch my eye.
Russell is an unsung hero of #OpenSource in Australia - it's his diligence and hard work that has kept the books straight for Linux Aus and auspiced conferences for several years now 👋
Hey my #BahasaIndonesia friends: is “kembali” the best translation for the “return” key? I feel like it looks…kinda weird, but I don’t know what other word I would use.
While you may know #English as a mutt language that borrows words from every language it encounters, you may be surprised to learn that #BahasaIndonesia is also a mutt that has absorbed words from an incredibly diverse set of foreign languages, thanks to #Indonesia’s role as a key trade center (and subject of conquest and colonization) in Southeast Asia.
Here’s a short clip showing #Portuguese words that have been absorbed into Bahasa Indonesia.
There’s a #BahasaIndonesia phrase that I love: “bau tanah”, which literally means “(someone) smells of earth (i.e. the soil)”, which basically means someone is very old.
The older you get, the more you smell like the earth. It’s so hilarious and grim and #mementoMori all at the same time. I use it all the time with my family when I talk about how old I’m getting!
