Hacking the Grepson 068: APIs

Matt (@messerman) and Mike (@nebyoolae) discuss Application Programming Interfaces and how you're using them all the time (most likely) without evening knowing (probably).

Do any suppliers expose about their stock, so I can query it at home?

I'm looking for the most efficient but still cheap middle-powered warm-white in some form factors.

deshipu,
@deshipu@fosstodon.org avatar

@dcz yes, and there even services that aggregate that data, like https://www.findchips.com/

dcz,
@dcz@fosstodon.org avatar

@deshipu Close, because I can query it, but the critical part is "at home". In the case of LED

https://www.findchips.com/parametric/Optoelectronics/Visible-LEDs

I can filter on luminosity, angle, and current, but I actually want to sort by efficiency: LumAnAn/Vol/Cur.

If I could dump the database, that'd be easy, but I don't see away to do that.

joachim, to programming
@joachim@drupal.community avatar

Is there a concept in #programming for whether an #API is inward or outward? For example, suppose I have an interface whose intention is that other code can implement it, but it's only supposed to be called by the internals of my code: it's public for implementation, but internal for callers.

aaronfc,
@aaronfc@mastodon.social avatar

@joachim do you have an example of an API that is supposed to be implemented but not called? Can't think of any useful case.

joachim,
@joachim@drupal.community avatar

@aaronfc Yes, plugins. You implement them to extend them, but the inventing module is in charge of calling them.

New experimental 📦 {stbl} is now available on CRAN! https://jonthegeek.github.io/stbl/

For client packages, I want to make sure args are in the form the API expects. Other packages ({checkmate}, {vctrs}) didn't QUITE do what I want, so I https://xkcd.com/927/ 'ed it and made my own!

There's still a lot missing, and I'll likely tweak the errors to make things clearer, but it was done-enough to put it into the world. Enjoy!

Interesting. I was thinking about writing something similar. I was tired of writing lengthy checks for input variables.

I'll give you package a spin 👍

I quickly checked the documentation and it seems straightforward.

jonthegeek,
@jonthegeek@fosstodon.org avatar

@Mehrad it's definitely at the "good enough for my specific use cases" stage. Let me know how it goes! Feedback will definitely help move it forward!
