FYI
I’ve decided not to report much on #HunterBiden’s trial. It is evident that he, Beau’s widow, & the #Biden family were in deep #grief.
In that grief, Hunter & Hallie self-medicated w/a highly addictive drug. Hunter already had a predisposition to #addiction, & he did what people addicted to drugs & alcohol do — made terrible decisions.
He admitted it & admitted to committing crimes during his addiction.
Detailing that painful time for the purpose of humiliating his family is cruel.
"Yet the crackdown had an unintended consequence, one little examined today: it has increased the suffering of patients who experience chronic pain, as medications that were once heavily promoted have since been restricted." —Ann Neumann for The Baffler
Also me: Come on a 12” sony vaio from 2004 for the equivalent of 44$ ? This thing could run 32 bit #HaikuOS . 1.5GHz and 1GB RAM should be enough for everybody.
Seems AliExpress sells SSD than run IDE connectors ? At 33$ it’s nearly as expensive as the computer was. Wonder how this performs. I don’t even remember the limitations of PATA IDE but it was probably not very high throughput. Access times should be a world of difference though. https://a.aliexpress.com/_mKdFxhM #retrocomputing
@santiago actually almost exactly the same experience. It failed multiple times and had to keep going in for repair - which involved shipping it from the UK to Switzerland. It took months each time until eventually ran out of warranty whilst they had it and then they refused to do anything with it unless I paid them to do so. I said I'd rather bin it, but could they send it back and then they sent me a bill for sending it back.

“I could walk out of here, go get a drink and within a week I could be dead. But I’m not interested in doing that”: how Trent Reznor pulled back from the abyss to make Nine Inch Nails’ Year Zero
In 2007, Nine Inch Nails released their fifth album, Year Zero – and Trent Reznor, the man behind it, had finally thrown off his demons
People in Baltimore have been dying of overdoses at a rate never before seen in a major American city.
The city was once hailed for its response to #addiction. But as #fentanyl flooded streets & ofcls shifted priorities, deaths hit unprecedented heights.
This is the first part in a series exploring #Baltimore’s overdose crisis.
In the past 6 yrs, nearly 6k lives have been lost. The death rate from 2018 to 2022 was nearly DOUBLE that of any other large city, & higher than nearly all of Appalachia during the prescription pill crisis, the Midwest during the height of rural meth labs or New York during the crack epidemic.
@Nonilex We are long past the stage where any level of intervention can solve these problems. Why do people drink/use drugs? Because their life is hot garbage and they (justifiably) can't cope.
Fix THAT, and drug use declines rapidly. But no, that would take money and 'giving' people things.
Design, Digested 53 is out! Of the few articles I read the past couple of months, the most memorable are about smartphones use and the ways modern tech can make us miserable.
Alcohol consumption and binge drinking remain a major public health crisis, with roughly 1 in 5 U.S. adults reporting binge drinking at least once a week (with an average of 7 drinks per binge).
I’m gonna point people to this article anytime they say, “it’s not the phones” that are making our kids miserable
>> The fastest growing sector of the culture economy is distraction. Or call it scrolling or swiping or wasting time or whatever you want. But it’s not art or entertainment, just ceaseless activity.
