Kitani (1895-1947) was a great nihonga painter (i.e. one who uses mineral pigments) and teacher who worked tirelessly to teach, nurture, and promote women artists in Japan.
This is a six-panel folding screen, painted on silk. A woman stands looking through a window at a boy inside, who appears to me as if he's not paying attention to her. This was painted just after the death of Kitani's younger brother, expressing her grief and how she misses him. The title comes from a song for the Buddhist Urabon festival, which is sung to welcome ancestral spirits visiting from the afterlife.

Joanna Boyce Wells (1831-1861) was a member of the Pre-Raphaelites and praised by John Ruskin and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, but current critics point out the influence of Old Masters and Romantic styles in her work, saying she went her own way.
Fanny Eaton (1835-1924) was a biracial Jamaican immigrant to England who was a popular model for the Pre-Raphaelites; this portrait was a study by Wells in preparation for a larger canvas about Queen Zenobia, but Wells died in childbirth before the project could begin. Eaton never profited much from her modeling and lived a working-class life.

"The Garden Parasol," Frederick Carl Frieseke, c. 1910.
American-born Frieseke was a student of the Impressionists but eschewed their passion for landscapes and instead focused on his two main fascinations, light and women. His paintings have a remarkable technique, but are also quite male-gazey, if you get my drift.
Anders Zorn was a noted Swedish painter, here depicting his wife on the pier and a friend approaching in a rowboat. The depth of detail is amazing when you realize this is done in watercolors, not oils. This shows influence of French Impressionism but mixes it with Scandinavian austerity for a unique style.

Tissot was a French painter mostly known for his portraits of fashionably dressed women doing everyday things. This particular canvas was a series depicting various months of the year; the sitter is his mistress, Kathleen Newton.
