Ubuntu Touch 20.04 OTA-2 is scheduled for release on Friday 28th July 2023. To keep that on track we really need your help with testing. To find out what needs doing use the link, read the blog and please start testing
Ubuntu Touch would be a good choice if you want Linux on your Pixel 2XL right away. While there is a port in the works for PostMarket OS, the Ubuntu Touch port is much more feature complete, and can probably be used as a daily driver if you're not dependant on Android apps (or can get Waydroid up and running).
Ubuntu Touch is not, however, mainline Linux: it keeps drivers from the Android kernel in place in order to maintain hardware support without having to build everything from scratch (like #PostMarketOS is forced to do). Furthermore there are some controversial (albeit reasonable) design choices limiting the system a bit more than most mainline Linux phone operative systems. In effect, you'd be mostly limited to the native offerings of the Open Store, deprived for now of all the wonderful apps developed for Gnome or Plasma Mobile.
That said, I have used #UbuntuTouch quite a bit, and the drawbacks in my experience is mostly the same as for any Linux phone (more than anything the fact that I depend on proprietary systems such as WhatsApp). The user experience with Lomiri is amazing, Ubuntu Touch is snappy with some great apps, and the community over at @ubports are a friendly bunch. :)
(I deleted this message once and tried sending again as federation with Lemmy.ml was broken - I'm not sure it will come through now either though)
I'm happy to announce the release of DeltaTouch, a messenger based on deltachat-core for Ubuntu Touch. It's available in the OpenStore for both xenial and focal: https://open-store.io/app/deltatouch.lotharketterer
Big thanks to @delta for their continued support throughout this journey!
Thanks also to @playforvoices for testing and valuable suggestions.
Last but not least, I would like to thank the UT AppDev community (Maciek, dobey, Jonatan) for always coming up with a solution.
A bit latter today (June 27th) at 13:00, at the PublicSpaces conference, Raoul Kramer (Program Manager for UBports Foundation), will be taking part in panel discussion on the subject of: «A phone without Apple or Google? It's possible!»

I'm tempted by the Amazon Fire tablets... But there's no way I'd want to keep the stock OS on them. Are there any notable OS ports out there for those devices? #ubuntutouch perhaps?
Experimental Snap support released for Ubuntu Touch (open-store.io)
Alfred Neumayer of @ubports (@fredldotme) has just released an app that introduces experimental Snap support for devices running 20.04....
Which Linux mobile OS would you recommend for a Google Pixel 2 XL?
I have an old Google Pixel 2 XL, and would like to get started with Linux on mobile. What Linux OS would you recommend, and why?
